the article is saying it is, because he's back on the field now instead of 3 months from now (if he had had the surgery).

Exactly!! So why don't other players skip the surgery? Sounds very risky in my opinion.

Everything about the entire situation around Galette sounds risky.

Which part were you talking about?

Torn pec recovery, non surgery.
Torn pec recovery, non surgery.
Yes, definitely.

The article said he based his decision, at least in part, on the opinion of Dr. Andrews. That should inspire more confidence than in other players coming back from tears.

Not all pec tears are created equal. If it was torn completely away from the bone then every doctor would say surgery (like Orakpo's). My understanding is it was not a complete tear for Junior.

From the article:

Galette suffered a complete tear of his pectoral muscle while benching 365 pounds on a day off in early June. He said he was taking the bar all the way down to his chest, something he said the Redskins don’t want their players to do. When he took the bar down on his sixth rep in June, it collapsed when his left shoulder gave out, forcing his spotter to help him. Galette knew immediately something was wrong.

Ouch. Yeah then I don't get it.

Maybe doctors are evolving their thinking on care for torn pecs?

he's a good player and he's already out on the field. i'd assume he gets 8 sacks this year.

Re: Junior Galette signs with Redskins (updated)

I gather from the article that his first diagnosis came when he was with the Saints. Since he was having all sorts of issues with the team, he didn't trust the surgery recommendation and sought a second opinion (Dr. Andrews). I guess from that perspective, I kinda see his point of not necessarily trusting a recommendation from a team he was having problems with.

As long as our medical staff is okay with him not having surgery, I guess I'm fine with it.

Now why in the hell would we do that? I may not be a Dr. but I have seen an actor who played one on TV AND I have stayed at a Holiday Inn! Clearly, my opinion is relevant and due considerable weight.

Re: Junior Galette signs with Redskins (updated)

We agree with other authors that acute surgical repair ensures good to excellent results in up to 90% of the cases [12, 15] as compared to 70% when treated non-operatively. Although both methods restore a full range of motion and pain relief, surgery is essential for restoration of normal strength and greater recovery of peak torques and work performed, especially for the athlete [2, 3, 7].

The technique for surgical repair varies from suturing the tendon to the periosteum [12], to the remaining tendon [11] or clavi-pectoral fascia [10]. Osseous fixation can be achieved through drill holes [7, 12, 15], barbed staples [5] and anchors [13].

-----------------

Im just confused on the diff btw a torn pec muscle and torn pec tendon.

how would you repair a torn muscle? suture it together? what would hold it in place? imagine the immobolizer you would need ... or when they say "torn pec muscle" they really mean torn pec tendon?

either way, obviously not getting surgery = greater risk of aggravation.

edit - i removed the photo. i didnt mean to disturb anyone.

re galette - more likely than not he aggravates the injury imo.

If he disrupted the locker room or just played like ass, then I'd give you your due. You get no credit for the football gods striking his achilles with a random bolt of lightning.

I just knew something would happen. I figured his pec would tear again or the suspension would lengthy.

We all know this team, what good luck do we get? GOOSE EGG; everytime

Re: Junior Galette signs with Redskins (updated)

dang, I was hoping if it was just a partial tear, he might be able to return this season but it seems a partial tear takes as long as full tear or rupture.

"Of the 31 players who sustained an Achilles tendon rupture, 21 (64%) returned to play in the NFL at an average of 11 months after injury. In the three seasons following their return, those 21 players saw significant decreases in games played and power ratings compared to the three seasons preceding the injury."

Not a bit. Even if you were, I can take it.

It's just that premier players at a select few premier positions don't hit the open market. QB, LT, pass rusher, WR. Teams don't let impact talent get away at those spots. The only way you come across them is drafting them.

So when we landed Galette I saw it as such a bonus, a potential MAJOR impact player at a position that doesn't grow on trees. It's the same with DeSean Jackson.

I wasn't looking at Galette to be the difference between 4-12 and 9-7, but he was a very important building block for the future. He represented a player we wouldn't have to address with a first rounder sometime in the next two seasons. Maybe he still can be, but I don't know how you sign him to a significant deal next offseason when there will be so many question marks about his first step coming back from this.
