looks like our type of corner

Re: Who do you take in round 3? (Wish List)
At first I was like, "this sucks" but upon reading more, I like the pick. He got a 41 on the Wunderlic. Hard hitter, local cat. I dig it.

Re: Who do you take in round 3? (Wish List)
Yahoo sports has " Barnes was on his way to a possible 1st rd pick "before he hurt his shoulder .

Re: Who do you take in round 3? (Wish List)
I'm still not sold this guy. Why not D.J. moore? He's better.
|
Re: Who do you take in round 3? (Wish List)
He could def step in as the 3rd corner. He'd probably be better than Smoot off of the bat. He's a lot bigger than Smoot too.

Missed most of his senior year at UMD because of a shoulder injury. Other than that, he's really fast and I think he has decent hands. I'm a big UMD fan with season tickets and I remember liking him as a player, but I can't remember too much more about him. [YT]LCO0sRPJEZ8[/YT]
Nice. I was actually eating lunch when I saw the receiver barf up his. I've never seen someone vomit after a big hit. |
Re: Who do you take in round 3? (Wish List)
Kevin Barnes Grade- 70
Overall Football Traits Production 4 2004: Maryland red shirts Barnes. 2005-06: Barnes starts one of the 23 games he appears in recording a total of 15 tackles. 2007: Barnes starts all 13 games recording 64 total tackles and four interceptions. 2008: Barnes starts the first seven games of the season before suffering a season-ending shoulder injury. He finishes the year with 20 tackles, two interceptions, five passes broken up and two forced fumbles. Height-Weight-Speed 3 Good height and adequate top-end speed but below-average bulk for frame. Durability 4 Suffered a season-ending shoulder injury during the seventh game of the season. Character 2 Member of the 2008 Terrapin Council, the team's leadership committee. A sociology major who graduated in December of 2008. Defensive Corner specific Traits Recognition Skills/Toughness 3 Shows tremendous instincts. Appears to understand route progressions and how receivers are trying to attack the coverage. Good effort on every play but needs to be more physical and his shoulder injuries raise concerns about upper body strength. Closing Burst 2 Quick feet and good short-area burst. Possesses good recovery speed. Fluidity 4 Shows some stiffness in his hips and more effective dropping into zone coverage than is matching up in man coverage. Ball Skills 2 Can elevate over the top of receivers and get hands on football without making contact. Hands are on the smaller side but he still does a good job of snatching the ball out of the air. Run Support 3 Willing and effective tackler but takes far too long to shed blocks and needs to develop a mean streak. Trait Scale 1 = Exceptional 2 = Above average 3 = Average 4 = Below average 5 = Marginal |
Re: Who do you take in round 3? (Wish List)
I think he'll be a solid player, but 1) DJ Moore is better and was available, and 2) why wouldn't we go OLB or OT???

Re: Who do you take in round 3? (Wish List)
D.J. Moorre CB - Vanderbilt Grade- 87
Overall Football Traits Production 1 2006: Moore starts nine of the12 games he appears in during his true freshman season. He records 37 tackles, intercepts a pass, breaks up two passes and forces three fumbles. Moore returns three punts for a total of seven yards and two kickoffs for a total of 26 yards. 2007: Moore starts 11 of the 12 games he appears in recording 83 tackles including two tackles-for-loss and one sack. He intercepts six passes and breaks up 10 passes. Moore returns 32 kickoffs for a total of 823 yards (25.7 yard avg.) He also contributes on offense carrying the ball six times for a total of 78 yards. 2008: Moore starts all 13 games and continues to contribute on both sides of the ball. He records 58 tackles including 4.5 tackles-for-loss including one sack. Moore intercepts six passes and breaks up seven passes. Offensively, Moore carries the ball nine times for a total of 76 yards and catches seven passes for a total of 143 yards and two touchdowns. He returns 21 kickoffs for a total of 407 yards (19.4 yard avg.) and 17 punts for a total of 244 yards (14.4 yard avg.). Height-Weight-Speed 4 Solid build but is shorter than ideal and his 40-yard dash times both at Combine and Pro Day are disappointing. Durability 1 Injured left ankle in second quarter of 2008 Music City Bowl but returned to the field in the second half. Character 1 Does whatever the coaching staff asks of him and a hard worker off the field. Intelligent person and player. Member of French honors organization. Defensive Corner specific Traits Recognition Skills/Toughness 1 Extremely instinctive in coverage and rarely gets caught out of position. Reads receivers routes quickly and gets a great jump on the ball as a result. Shows good awareness in zone coverage and does a nice job of baiting quarterbacks. Is not afraid to get his jersey dirty. Closing Burst 3 A quick-twitch athlete and footwork is excellent. Smoothly transitions out of backpedal and shows above-average closing burst when the ball is thrown in front of him. Plays faster than 40 time indicates but there are concerns regarding his deep recovery speed. Fluidity 1 Fluid and naturally flips hips when asked to turn and run with receivers. Elite ability to stop and start and does a sound job of mirroring receivers in man coverage. Ball Skills 2 Natural hands and has experience lining up at receiver. Plays the ball extremely well and does a nice job of breaking up passes without getting flagged for pass interference. However, he isn't tall enough to compete for jump balls working against bigger receivers. (See 1st quarter Georgia 2008). Run Support 3 Is willing in run support and shows some toughness. But his tackling skills must improve, especially in the open field. Also slight concerns about ability to shed bigger receivers. Trait Scale 1 = Exceptional 2 = Above average 3 = Average 4 = Below average 5 = Marginal This kid is much better. and is still available, but i still think we should have gone OT with Meredith. |
Re: Who do you take in round 3? (Wish List)
I guess they feel really comfortable with either Heyer or Williams at RT.
|
Re: Who do you take in round 3? (Wish List)
Hopefully Meredith will fall? To the 5th round? Gahhhh.
|
Re: Who do you take in round 3? (Wish List)
Williams will play RG, he is too big to contain quick DE's
|
Re: Who do you take in round 3? (Wish List)
I'm taking Caldwell all day he could have Casey's job by mid-season.

Sidbury and Meredith were there for the taking. "BPA"? I'd say it's ignoring the fundamental weakness of the team and the major reason for the second half collapse. Need to address the offensive line. |
Re: Who do you take in round 3? (Wish List)
Caldwell was gone by the time we were up. I think meredith could, POSSIBLY, make an immidiate contribution at RG.

ok lets trade carlos for picks and get some picks for his as s
|
Re: Who do you take in round 3? (Wish List)
do we have a 4th rounder?
|
Re: Who do you take in round 3? (Wish List)
God, im still not over that damn pick. wtf, there was so many players out there who are better. Damnit.
|
Re: Who do you take in round 3? (Wish List)
geez, relax fellas, the Barnes pick was not that bad of pick. Does anyone trust Westbrook, or Tryon to play on a regular basis if we had an injury? oh ok? Looks like Duke and Meredith both fell out of the 3rd round, so there may be more to them than meets the lazy eye. I wanted Sidbury, Duke or Meredith too but overall it is not a terrible pick.
|
Re: Who do you take in round 3? (Wish List)
Boy, the FO really doesnt want to extend Carlos. Kinda surprising. The guy looks like a beast, shoulder injury is disturbing though, really thought we at least get the best availible O-Lineman. The OLB availible at our pick were not worth a 3rd round...maybe exception of kid from South Florida....dont like this pick

D.J. Moore. Look him up. He was, and is still available. |
Re: Who do you take in round 3? (Wish List)
Thought we had more pressing needs...OL! They need to stop letting Tom Cruise make the picks!
|
Re: Who do you take in round 3? (Wish List)
Not that I'm thrilled about the pick, but i've seen Barnes play and he's a beast. Hopefully they'll pick up an offensive lineman with their next pick.

God I hope so Ruhskins, the o-line is where the team broke down and failed us last year. Unless the younger kids (Heyer, Rhinehart, Geisinger) are ready to step up this year, the old guys WILL break down on us again.. |
Re: Who do you take in round 3? (Wish List)
I would have thought Meredith myself but he's questionable in the run game and sometimes appears confused with what to do from the reports I've read. I'm not sure he would be any better than Heyer. I've wanted Sidbury for awhile now but the need is not as important now that we have Orakpo. I don't have much of a problem with Barnes. I think this shows that we're trying to become an elite defense. The dude can hit, he's fast, good instincts, and covers well.

When is our next pick, I just got done running a 5k and am on my crackberry?

I think if you are hoping for a 3rd rounder to save the day, then we're in big trouble. The o-line has gotten a bit younger, and the young guys have gotten more experienced. I think Levi Brown from Cincy will become a free agent (?) and he could be a better pick up than a mid round rookie. |
Re: Who do you take in round 3? (Wish List)
I know about Moore. He is nice but very small. Barnes was not a bad pick, Im telling you, the kid can play. Hopefully Sidbury, Duke or Meredith will keep falling to the 5th. If not my man Follett may really be there!

I agree, I guess without taking Oher at 13, or any of the available o-lineman available with our third, the team feels that the young guys are ready to foot the load for us. Oh, and whoever we may be able to pick up after a few cuts.:twocents: PS- I worry about Rabach at center VERY MUCH. |

That would be solid. I think we have made some solid additions this year with Dockery and Williams, Remember, if it wasn't for Williams injury problems with his back he would be an Elite OL, he was drafted 4th overall in 2002. He is a big man, i think he can play a solid gaurd for us, if Levi Brown is available, for the right price that would be a good pick up. Don't forget though, we still need that SLB. Leroy Hill is the ideal pick, but it will probably end up being MW for the veteran minimum. |
Re: Who do you take in round 3? (Wish List)
I dont get the anger over this pick. Barnes is SOLID. CB is a need as well as much as we dont wanna believe it. Dont forget that the Giants, Cowboys, and Eagles are in our division and all have more than two good WRs. Do you really trust Smoot after this year to be a solid nickel? Or Tryon to be our dime? How about if there's and injury? I think we all have our eyes set on OL and LB for just reason but if the FO doesn't think the guys available are an upgrade to what we have then I have no problem with them taking BPA which in this case is still a position of need in my opinion.

Re: Who do you take in round 3? (Wish List)
Vinny made a great pick in the first round so he needed to balance it out by making a subpar pick in the third round.

Hopefully we can make a Horton-esque find/contributer:headbange in the later rounds... |
Re: Who do you take in round 3? (Wish List)
Look, you had several needs here and they went with the BPA for their needs, I assume. DB was one of those needs. Then it's just a question of their scouting and board grades. Now, I have not had too much confidence in their scouting, but that's different from saying they blew it today on the clock.
The deeper question of talent evaluation is something Danny could actually fix, if he wanted. Instead of spending his billions on FAs and coaches, why not buy the best scouts? It would be cheaper and have a big impact. But it's not nearly as sexy, so it ain't gonna happen... |
Re: Who do you take in round 3? (Wish List)
The draft is NOT A SHOPPING LIST to address needs because there is absolutely NO guarantee that pick will pan out. The thing is, it's more likely that reach pick for the greater need will 'bust' than a BPA pick at a lesser need.

Barnes was drafted because they wanted a big physical corner to abuse T.O. types at reciever a la Shawn Springs. |
