Who gives a damn about stats? Would you rather have a team be 50% on 3rd down but average 17 points? The bottom line is the offense is scoring enough points to win games. 31 points yesterday should win most games!!! I think the issue with 3rd down is when teams know when we have to pass then that's the weakness. It's a combination of the line, RG3 feeling comfortable letting plays develop/not wanting to take off running, and the wr's hanging on the the ball. We have to remember that we have a 22 year old rookie playing QB. As time goes on he will develop into a better passer. His footwork in the pocket is a little off but that will improve. He's a gym rat. But again, look at this offense from last year to this year. It's night and day.But I agee, Kyle need to ditch the pitch!
It's not all on RGIII with those 3rd down conversions and I'm not suggesting it is. It's a mix of everything. Penalties, drops, play calling, bad passes, and so on. I understand not converting a 3rd and long on a high percentage, but it's the 3rd and shorts that we don't convert that simply drive me up the wall. Kyle often times likes to get cute with a 3rd and short only for it to backfire. I've seen several of those damn pitch plays on 3rd and short which chaps my ass.

In the end, more often or not if you aren't converting 3rd downs, you most likely are going to be on the losing end of a 60 minute match. So far, I think we've had some severe breaks go our way (fumble for TD, fumble not recovered in-bounds) which have been deciding factors in our winning. You can't expect luck that good to continue though so it's better we not rely on that luck.

I actually thought that we convert around 75% of 3rd and 5 or less, and it plummets to around 20% for 3rd and 6 and higher. I could have sworn I heard that somewhere.

Not sure of the breakdown actually. I think the penalties have a impact on why we end up on 3rd and long often. Which makes sense since we are one of the most penalized teams in the league. That isn't going to bode well for anybody.

Yeah 3rd and long has been our main problem.

Good thing we're able to make up for it in other areas, like big plays.

Seriously who gives a crap what down it is when we are scoring 30 a game?

There are not many teams that can convert 3rd and long consistently

Considering out defense can easily give up 30 per game, I do.

Scoring 30 a game means nothing when the other team can drop 30+ as well.

You know who steps up during key moments.. Rob Jackson.
still.. this defense is playing as well as it can. We lack speed on defense bigtime beside a few of our CBs. We need a young ballhawk LB to be honest as bad as we do a Safety.

ding ding ding, we have a winner!!!!

Hopefully, with an addition of at least one competent safety and Orakpo back, the defense should get better. At least that is the thought........... But corner remains the number two need right after safety, then ILB, then RT.

Maybe I should redirect the focus here to the penalties since I think these are causing us the 3rd and long situations that we are having problems converting.

Well, scoring 18-20 a game when others dropped 30 on us got us to 5-11 or 6-12. Scoring the 30 has us at 7-6 and in the playoff hunt with 3 more games to play. Scoring 30 clearly means something when our defense is as bad as it is.

So if instead of big plays on first or second down we were more consistent on third and long it would help our defense. You cant really expect to score much more than we are scoring is my point.

We have become very spoiled since the last twenty years apparently. I remember when 17 was the high water mark. Lol. I cannot believe i am hearing that 30 a game isnt good enough. Well maybe i can.

Let's be honest here. We are 2 lucky fumbles away from being 5-8 right now. How often are you going to have a ball bounce like it did to Morgan for a score? Six more inches on the Paul recovery and the Ravens seal that game. Luck has played a huge part in use being 7-6. Mind you, skill, talent, and coaching put them in the position to be here.
