Re: Kirk Cousins 365 thread
2 mottos as Skins fans:
1. There's always next year; and 2. Never easy This falls into the latter. There are 4 options at this point and I'm fine with 3 of them and 100% against 1. I'm OK with the non exclusive tag and hoping some team signs him, signing him to a long term deal and keeping him, or signing and trading him. I do not want him playing out the year for us on the franchise tag.
If that happens, there will be only two possible reasons: 1) the Redskins lowballed him again with unreasonably low contract offers 2) Cousins got a decent offer but turned it down because he flat doesn't want to be here We'll know at that point. If July 15 passes without a deal, he's as good as gone. |
Here's another depressing thought... imagine losing Cousins, Jackson, and Garçon all in one offseason? I don't see it happening but right now who knows.
We just have stand behind our vaunted defense then. |

I could read about who we drafted at that time and have this situation be settled. In a simple world we meet in the middle for 5 years 115 million and move on to building the rest of the team. A man can dream. |

Re: Kirk Cousins 365 thread
Well, it wouldn't be anything less. The standard compensation are the two first round picks. The Redskins don't have to negotiate in this instance. Now if the team has something else that appears to be "equal value" in the Redskins' eyes, say a star defensive player and some lower round picks or a couple defensive players, then the Redskins could negotiate a deal like that. But, they don't have to take anything less than the two first round picks.
Are you 100% sure about that? The way I understood it from Cooley and Kevin's show is the 2 first rounders are the starting point of the negotiation, in a non-exclusive tag where the Redskins don't match an offer made by a team, but if this team says "we won't give more than a first and a second, take that or keep KC" I think it's up to the Redskins to decide what they want to do... How wrong am I? |

That's what I understand when I read about the tags' rules online, but I'm pretty sure Cooley said no team would actually give up 2 first rounders... maybe I misunderstood his point... |

How wrong am I?
You're understanding it as if the new team holds all the cards and has the power over negotiation. They don't. In fact, there doesn't have to be any negotiation at all. If San Fran offers a contract to Cousins, the Redskins decide not to match, then if Cousins agrees and signs, San Fran has to give up their two first round picks. They don't get an option to negotiate unless the Redskins are willing to negotiate another deal. It's basically defaulted as two first round picks unless otherwise negotiated. That's how the league has set it up. If a team says they're not giving up their first rounders, well, they don't get Kirk Cousins. It's not that the Redskins necessarily want to get rid of Cousins, but if another team is willing to outbid the 'skins, then they are not getting rid of him and leaving empty-handed. |

Lol awesome analogy. I do too, and it's like I don't really love my wife and won't be disappointed if she does. |

If July 15th comes and no deal is reached...

Re: Kirk Cousins 365 thread
He wants to play a long time and not keep on being franchise tag. Who could blame him. But would hate to see him go.
