Biggest problem with the way the Redskins are approaching the defense right now is that they are to an extent, being accepting of mediocrity on that side of the ball.

And the problem if you shoot for mediocrity -- and ask anyone who has watched our offense the last two or three years -- is that you typically don't get anything resembling mediocrity.

We need to either reinforce our strength (the linebacker level) or fix our weaknesses (secondary, safeties, corner depth, D-Hall). I realize we're too cap restrained to do both, but just pick one or the other and at least try to make an incremental improvement over last year.
I'm thinking the draft strategy has already been adjusted accordingly. I expect to see more defense than I orginially thought.
Does anyone know if we have plans to grab Matt Leinart? He sorta makes sense as a bridge for RG3
I was thinking along the same lines. Houston just released him days ago so he's a free agent. The Redskins showed interest in Leinart last off season after the lockout ended but with Orton signing with Dallas, the Redskins may pursue Leinart again this year unless he ends up playing for his USC coach in Seattle.
Yup. Although I hope we make some moves, reluctantly I am mentally preparing to just accept that safety will be a weakness for us. Griffin will need to put up a lot of points to overcome deficits in our secondary.
With Jenkins coming back and everyone else another year into the scheme it is a good possibility that pressure on the QB will increase which could (could) hide any potential weaknesses in the secondary.

Time will tell, and there are a lot of moves left to be made.

Ravens G Ben Grubbs in play?

I'm surprised. Tackle is a bigger need and he wants paid. He turned down a nice deal from Baltimore.

No surprise there. He'd been on our radar, but we actually didn't expect the Ravens to let him hit free agency

Been out a while but yes I keep hearing that Ben Grubbs is a possibility for us as is Aaron Ross.

Ross would make sense because he's another cofield bowen type of signing taking away the other rivals talent.

to be honest, I'd rather have asante samuel when he's cut.

is grubbs mobile and athletic enough for zoneblocking?

Asante is fine for a reasonable price, I would still rather get a corner through the draft though, lot of them are available or a safety, or a corner than can play both. Like the Tru Johnson. Johnson, Markell, DeQuan Menzie or Mr. Norman, plus asante at a cheap reasonable price... might be a good deal. But don't be suprised if asante goes back to the pats.

Grubbs is actually mobile AND was drafted to play for current Skins OL coach C. Foerster in BAL

Winston is. No idea about Grubbs. He's 6'3", 310 pounds if that helps answer the question.

Nice... thanks matty. still, my thinking is that if the ravens offered him a very good deal, then we'd have to up the ante to get him here. OG is not a position i think it would be wise to pay through the nose for. id rather go with what we have and draft someone to develop in the 3rd.

Sounds like about as good of a fit as Eric Winston would be here.

IF we signed Grubbs I would expect us to trade Chester back to Baltimore

as far as i know, winston hasnt expressed interest in us and we havent in him (likley due to his asking price and our not being able to afford him after the other owners screwed us out of 18MM).
Wonder if he can play RT?
i looked back over his draft profile and he was referred to as a "pure guard" a number of times. who knows though.
