I disagree.
They will do that because it limits how much money Snyder has to pay out of his own pocket. He doesn't care about anything else.

It will be Heinicki and Howell next year with our lame duck coach.
Hopefully the owner can come in and at least extend Payne.

Next year is another shit show.
Best we can hope for is a new owner and that is fine with me.

When/If the team is sold, we should all meet in Vegas to celebrate.
Actually you bring up a good point if the team isn't sold by March, I just don't see the team signing any veterans or resigning any of our free agents.

Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread

Seen an article suggesting he'll play both TH and Howell. Seems a dumb idea, given he knows what he has (and doesn't) with TH and we're out of the post season. Just give Howell the whole game and be done with it. Use it to see how Howell plays in a real game. Anything else is just muddled thinking, especially at TH is an FA afterwards.
I agree. He's like Wentz in that he looks like a prototypical QB, and makes some plays that look great, but the non-great plays are no good.

If Howell didn't go back to school for 1 more year, he would have went in the 1st round EASILY. And his numbers from that last year were still good, even with losing guys.

Howell will have a better pro career than Levis imo.
If we draft Levis -- which would be fitting for this front office -- I'll find better ways to waste my Sunday afternoons. As if this franchise hasn't already given me ample reasons to do this.

Levis is a much lesser version of Zach Wilson. Who was also hyped beyond belief coming off the covid year, where BYU had to put together a schedule of randoms, which he predictably dominated.

I hope Howell is the answer. It'd be great if he was. The rookie salary would be possible to build around. And we have big needs, plus Payne to figure out.

None of this really matters with Danny boy still owning things. So I just wasted 5 minutes typing all this out. ha.

The ONLY reason Howell is getting the nod because Heinicke went to the staff and told 'em Howell deserved to play and play the entire game. Otherwise, Rivera had made a moRONic move.

Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread

We won't know our priority needs until Monday. If Howell comes out firing, starting QB could be his to lose which changes the current picture. If he stinks to high heaven then OL and QB are to of the list. Question is where do we fill those holes from. For me, we might be able to fill 3-4 positional needs from FA, particularly OL. If Howell is the guy then we need a vet QB as backup (presuming TH is gone), and ideally that's an FA not a trade. That then frees us up to use the draft to get BPA across the board.

So I'd target LB, OL (2-3) and TE from FA, then OL, CB, and LB in the draft, with probably another QB and RB thrown in. If we draft another WR in the early rounds someone wants shooting.

I'm presuming we re-sign Payne or he gets tagged. If neither, that's another headache to solve.

It's likely that this team will once again NOT be a destination of choice, even more so with the current ownership situation. Just can't see all that being ironed out in time for all the offseason deadlines with free agency, etc. We'll see...

I would like them to try to bring back DT Da'Ron Payne, S/ST Jeremy Reaves, LB Cole Holcomb, C Tyler Larsen, G Wes Schweitzer. Everyone else can find another home.

I would like them to try to sign a Veteran QB, LB, CB, T, and G in free agency.

Here's my short list: Jacoby Brissett, Roquan Smith, James Bradberry, Orlando Brown Jr, and Roger Saffold

Draft: QB, G, T, C, DL/E, S, CB, LB - not necessarily in that order.

I don't see a need for a TE or a WR at this point. Could always add a RB, TE or WR, but neither of those positions feel like even close to a priority with all the other holes and depth needed.

We don’t need TE’s. Armani Rogers, Bates, Turner should be really good. I would move on from Thomas.

I wouldn't draft a TE as it stands but I'd still see what we can do in FA. I'm not convinced we have a dependable receiving TE on the roster already. I like Thomas when he's 100% but I'm wondering if he's going to be 100% again.

I would prefer to keep Thomas one more year, his contract is not significant so it won't limit our ability to sign FA players.

Yes, but they could promote Zampese the QB coach or there may well be a young coach out there that would like a chance of year to show what he can do..

Snyder selling the team is No. 1. But I don't trust that asswhipe to do it. If that's not an option, and if Snyder stays, I'm assuming Rivera does too. Give me this:

1. Replace Turner.
2. Fix the OL thru FA and/or the draft.
3. Keep Payne.
4. Let Howell start the off-season as QB 1.
5. Draft a mid-round QB to compete with Howell, but most likely be a cheap back-up

Zampese who said Wentz was our best option last week and would look different because of Brob and a C? He’s as clueless as Turner.

Any assistant is going to want the opportunity to showcase as an OC, I don't think that'd be an issue.

List of FA QBs for 2023

https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/free-agents/quarterback/?ref=trending-pages

Snag 1 of these guys and get a mid-round QB. Let all 3 compete to start.

I'm confident that Howell would win that competition and then we would still have depth and another developmental guy.

I think I'm with you on keeping Thomas, but just wanted to say that you and I aren't looking at the same contract. His cap number in 2023 is $8.8M. We'd save $5.3M if we parted ways.

I'd still keep him - I think he'll be useful again as he gets healthier. He was particularly terrible as a blocker this year but I think that gets better as he gets his legs under him.

I assumed instead of checking the actual contract, it's a little bit higher than I thought it would be. Nonetheless, we should keep him.

Daron is talking like a guy who's ready to get paid, and couldn't care less who pays him.

I'd make him an offer but we need to establish a line we won't go over, and if he wants more he walks. Or we could explore doing a sign-and-trade? Is that a thing in the NFL?

Gotta be honest, his play this year finally reflected his draft position but the way he talks makes me wonder if he will continue to play at that level once he gets paid. I'm getting Haynesworth vibes from him.

I wouldn't expect him to talk otherwise, and definitely his agent wouldn't want him to say otherwise.

I would pay him and with my first pick get an OL, second OL. If you are not paying for FA OL Payne can get paid. Seattle was able to draft 2 starting Tackles, it can be done. There should be plenty of $$ for Payne, Curl and possibly Holcomb. I would cut McCain, Thomas, trade Samuel, restructure Roullier and get more cap space that way.

I just don't feel like you pay two guys that much money at DT. They just played their best game of the year w/out Allen. They can tag Payne and keep him for one more year. I know that pisses off the player but it is what it is.

I would submit a reasonable contract and highlight the fact he was great this year and compare it to full body of work. I would prepare to tag him and I would call teams to let them know they can negotiate a deal. He gets a better one, I wouldn’t be stingy with compensation… late 2nd round maybe a switch to move up with another…maybe a couple 3rds in in consecutive years.

But I will say if we lose Payne then we go to Montez and try to work something out early.

Ridgeway had his best game and was responsible for Dallas lack of a running game, he ate people up. He suffered a torn pectoral muscle and sat the 2nd half. Love the Vanilla Gorilla!!

Exactly how I feel about it, plus Turner was extended. The only guy coming here to run the offense will be another Ron retread from Carolina or Zampese. I kinda lean that Scott comes back.

I don't like this offense or this version of it. I don't like all of the shotgun. I don't like the lack of audibles. Not enough quick slants. I don't like all the gimmick stuff to Samuel. You should be able to get Samuel the ball out of the slot. They did it the first game of the year. What happened? I don't like the weak play action plays. They don't fool anyone.

I know it's a dead position but I love having a true fullback on the roster. I don't like all this running out of shotgun. Not a fan.

We must be the only team that lets 1st round picks walk, we had many leave to get a 3rd rounder, this pattern needs to stop. One interesting tidbit, since 1968-present there have been 25 years were Washington didn't have a 1st round pick. George Allen and Beathard traded a lot of them.
