I'm not sure there would be enough room for those egos. One Gruden is probably more than plenty in one building at a time.

Gruden has always been fairly progressive in his offensive mentality as the years go on, but if he's going to be successful in his third stint as a coach, he's going to have to be more comfortable marrying himself to a single qb.

Shanahan had a reputation for being offensively progressive, but I feel like the offense he ran was unique for his time, but also rare in that people around the league didn't try to copy it. Because of that, defenses never really worked hard on stopping a misdirection based offense. Once that changed within the last eight years, I think it became clear that this scheme isn't that progressive, and modern defenses simply aren't as confused by it as they once were. Once teams learned how to blitz into bootlegs to force a throw, that offense got pretty straightforward quickly.

I think a lot of people want RG3 to be our QB, regardless of how he plays. Who cares if it's RG3 or Cousins? We should all want the best guy out there, regardless of ego, draft status, money...and that goes for ALL positions. I'd love for Gruden to come in here and say..." all jobs are up for grabs, whoever performs, plays"...kind of what Chip Kelly did.

It's obvious Gruden likes both guys. But... if he's hired, RG3 will not have the long leash that the Shanahans have given him.

We brought back Joe Gibbs, who retired, was inducted into the HOF and was a NASCAR owner...and he took us back to the playoffs without a QB.

Not to belabor the point, but wasn't Shanny as equally invested in the nfl throughout his yearlong exile? That seemingly didn't help much.

Gruden has been out of the NFL for five years, and hasn't really been actively coaching and working with players to the same degree he would have during his coaching years. I just fear that something may have been lost. Should he be hired, 3 of the past 4 coaches would have had some duration of absence from the game, and the two we've worked with have had marginal success. Granted, two instances isn't necessarily a trend, and it doesn't factor into how gruden will perform, I worry about the odds, regardless. I'd much rather try our luck with an up and comer than a retread.

I want a teacher and a leader of men running the show. The jury is still out whether the Shanahans have been solid teachers relative to developing Griffin. Viewing from the outside, it would appear that an offense was modified to Griffin's unique skills, perhaps at the expense of progressing Griffin in the passing game. I want to see far more WCO concepts, where the ball is out of the QB's hand on rhythm, instead of being so dependent on play action passing behind our train-wreck of a pass protection O-line.

I think when the coaches retire and go to the booth, do TV, etc, they are still around the game and involved with current players, coaches, etc...

Gruden still does his QB camp and all that. I wouldn't say its passed him by.

With all due respect to Coach Gibbs, If i understand it he was completely away from football alltogether until he was part of that group that tried to buy the Atlanta Falcons....

No. Coach Gibbs, after his retirement, went into the booth to do football game commentary for the NFL, and then was on one of the NFL pre-game shows (for I think either CBS or NBC.) So, he was around the NFL even after his retirement.

I completely agree about Jon Gruden or any other retread candidate.

Vermeil, mentioned above, did not win a SB until he got to the Rams so is not the same as Shanahan, Gibbs, or Jon Gruden.

I hope we hire a first-time NFL head coach who has that raw, unsatisfied hunger to win a Super Bowl. Jay Gruden fits this description whereas Chucky does not.
