Re: Spagnuolo stays with Giants!
Ok so if DS has made his decision(as most of us think he has) what is the hold up now? Is Fassel trying to get a mint out of them? Are they holding back so it doesn't look like they would have gotten Spagnuolo if not for his new contract?
This just doesn't make sense as to why this process is dragging on forever. The other NFL teams found their HC in days not weeks. The only reason to wait thoughout the playoffs was if DS had his eye on a coach from a SB team. Was he just going though the motions?
Well the delay was largely because they had to wait to interview Spagnuolo. If people want to think that's not true, that's on them. Now that Spags it out of the way, they have to go get Fassel and fly him to DC (what you thought he was sitting in Snyder's kitchen just twiddling his thumbs and waiting?), put the final notes on the contract and clear it with attorneys, draft a press release and set up the press conference. I thought'd we see something tonight. But more likely it will be tomorrow I think |
Re: Spagnuolo stays with Giants!
i still think there are better options then settling for fossil who is an awful canidate to begin with.the chargers waited awhile last year and had that whole mess up with marty getting fired and bringing in norv , but it worked out for them. i was surprised russ grimm wasnt contacted to begin with, cause i think he would do fine. and if we get a retred i wanted jim mora jr but we messed that up ,so id go for mike tice. tice help turn the jags off a dominetnt one with a one two puch running game and david garrad coming along nicely. so he could work with betts , portis and jason campbell in the same manor. i also would like the idea of browns oc rob chudzinski ,who turned an alful off into a nice one.plus he worked at mamai hurricans as a coach from 94 to 03 so he would already have that to connect with some of are players. now my last thought would to simple upgrade one of are assints to head coach. say greg blance then bring in dl coach pepper johnson of the patriots.but the best in house canidate is joe bugel. yes extremly old yet always fired up bugel. the players will respect him more the any other coach they could bring in ,and it would save some face with the fans. he already has head coaching experence from 90-93 with the cards and in 97 with oak.make him into the head figure and have blance and zorn run plays like gibbs had al and gregg do. so im all for going from one joe to another.

You declared your self anti-Fassel, and then gave one of the most foolproof pro-Fassel arguments: "if it can work for Norv, it can work for anyone".

i just have never liked fossil thats all ,if it was pretty much anyone else i proberly wouldnt be as aginst it ,but i am for " joe for hc"

And then he made a push for Bugel (who I love as an Offensive Line Coach) who has done far, far, less than Fassel as a head coach; and over 10 years ago |

Do you have any real reason not to like him, or just cause? |
Re: Spagnuolo stays with Giants!
I guess I thought that since Fassel was the front runner they had the basics of the contract worked out and it wouldn't be this long. But then again the marathon interview with Spags didn't end till last night.

Re: Spagnuolo stays with Giants!
Mort reported on NFL Live that the plane is going to pick up Fassel and to expect a Friday afternoon presser to announce him as HC..
|
Re: Spagnuolo stays with Giants!
im not sure where the hatred comes from but i never thought he should of been a head coach to begin with and im not saying bugel would be that much better. but im assuming who ever is the head coach this year will be a temp untill next year when he can get cower or some other big name. so bugel would be able to keep alittle more countinty from the gibbs part 2 era then anyone else .because if we think whoever is the head coach is staying after one year ,where kidding are selves ,he might of fired gibbs after one year if he wasnt "gibbs" with the whole games passed him by bs.so we messed up with letting gw and al walk, breaking up what we had going ,so why not bugel over fossil -same difference in the end ,and proberly would finish with the same record in between 5 and 8 wins

Re: Spagnuolo stays with Giants!
oh well there goes this thread ,atleast its over and we can discuss player moves and draft choices .

He made a list and interviewed every person on it. Spags was a hot coach and he wanted to interview him. Rules said he couldn't until this week. He wasn't impulsive or splashy. In the end, nobody topped his initial #1 choice but he absolutely interviewed enough canidates and gave them a fair shot. In his opinion, he is bringing in who he thinks is the best option (and don't think for a moment that he wouldn't terminate a fresh contract and pay an assistant that Spags didn't want and then hire who he did). As for Fassel; while not my first choice (or top five really), his players liked him. Right now we don't need a hard ass. We have guys who just want to follow a true leader to the SB. Give him a chance, guys. Remember his "garauntee" in 2000? It took balls to give it and his guys fought their guts out to back him up. Let's get behind our FO and new staff and try to look for some positives here. |
Re: Spagnuolo stays with Giants!
I thought he would be perfect for the skins, how do we avoid fassel now?

I'm eagerly waiting the Jim Fassell signing so I can change my avatar. I'm not changing my avatar until the new head coach is official

Why? Put some meat on the bones of your post |
Re: Spagnuolo stays with Giants!
Spags had a terriffic defensive game plan for the Pats, and has had his D play terriffic games through the playoffs. He would have done great things with a talented skins defense that is ready to match up with the nfls best.

Ok, but we're not looking for a defensive coordinator. |

You're right, I give up on Spags. |
Re: Spagnuolo stays with Giants!
I'm glad we did not hire Spags.
I think that hiring a defensive HC would ruin what little bit of continuity this team retained by making Greg B DefCor. We need an offensive mind at HC and leave the D alone! I'm not ready for a total rebuild! |
Re: Spagnuolo stays with Giants!
Fassel has been the favorite all along, just hire him and get it over with.
Just get it done...plus SmootSmack has a man crush on Fassel anyway!!! It will be fun to read about that all next season!!!!:laughing2 |
Re: Spagnuolo stays with Giants!
So he got hot over the past six weeks and won the SB, that doesn't mean he is going to be a great HC or even a great DC. He had one great year. .
I agree 100% with this statement. Look at Dave Campo, Marvin Lewis and Norv Turner (Turner was OC but same concept). I'm sure there were more but my point is that these were considered genius coordinators and had/are having mediocre careers as HC. We need to be cautious with our next hire, especially if he is young like Spags. I would rather have a band-aid coach like Fassel to hold us together with the same basic concepts until someone we cant live without comes along than to sign a huge deal with an unproven coach and be stuck with him. |

I hear what you are saying but good thing that JK Cook was not like that with a young J.Gibbs! Or there would not be three Championships for our side! |

Woah! What? Where did that come from? |
Re: Spagnuolo stays with Giants!
I just don't understand how anyone can be so for Fassel. The guy was 58-52 in 7 seasons (including 2-3 in the playoffs). His most recent NFL experience was getting fired as the OC of the Ravens. The Giants teams he coached were only rememberable for being so damn boring. Look I am not against the guy and lord knows I'll wish him the very best if he gets the job, but I am just lukewarm about the guy at best.

Well Gibbs had at least 3 years experience as an offensive coordinator when we named him head coach |

It's called going back to the past. I don't know if you are old enough to remember the Jack Pardee days? That's the impression of what we'll get with Fossil. |

SmootSmack why do you believe that Fassel is the best the Redskins can get of who is out there. My not some one else? Also it seem strange to pick other coaches before the HC?

It is sickening if it is Fassel.

Well I think the Cowboys did it last year, the Dolphins did it this year. I think it could be a new trend where the front office will be responsible for not just the players but also the coaching staff (the entire staff). Anyhow, we can't pretend that Zorn and Blache don't exist so let's be sure to consider that when asking ourselves what makes Fassel a good candidate, better than Spagnuolo, Meeks, or Mariucci: -Fassel was a head coach in the NFC East for seven years (seven right?). Even though his last head coaching gig was four years ago. No other candidate could claim that, Spags was at best a coordinator for one year -Fassel is battle tested dealing with the New York media. So DC shouldn't be too hard. As I mentioned in another thread, the only job more scrutinized in DC than President is Redskins Head Coach. It may not seem like a big deal but the HC of this team is someone who has to have a "presence" and not wilt under the spotlight. The only other head coach was Mariucci who had to deal with the "hard-hitting" San Fran and Detroit media -There are many recent examples of head coaches getting a second chance, and being largely successful the second time around. More so than sustained success for first time coaches. Here's where you can argue for Mooch perhaps as well -Fassel has made it to the Super Bowl so he knows what it takes to get there, and it's more than the majority of NFL coaches throughout history can claim -Fassel is highly regarded by some of the NFL's best ever QBs who have had some of their best seasons under his tutelage. Together with Jim Zorn (who along with Holmgren got more out of Matt Hasselbeck than anyone probably ever expected) they can turn Campbell into a bonafide star -This is Zorn's first time as an offensive coordinator so I don't think it hurts to have someone with experience on that side of the ball to help him out -Meeks and Spags are defensive minded coaches so it would just be redundant to have them along with a proven defensive coach in Greg Blache. Fassel won't get in Blache's way. (Neither would Mooch either I suppose) -Snyder and Cerrato are comfortable with him. (Remember they were this close to hiring him in 2004). And that's very important. For one thing, it makes for a better working environment. Secondly, the more comfortable Snyder is with the coach, the less likely he is to intervene. This isn't to say they weren't comfortable with the other candidates, but I don't think to the same extent as to with Fassel |

People might think I'm starting a fight and please I'm really tryiing not to but why not Fassel?Joe Gibbs is a great coach notice I said is not was,why is it the Skins are having such a hard time, why are people pulling out,how is it Joe Gibbs left? You need to take Fassel and give him support if you fire him after 1 year noone will come to the Skins............definitely not Cowher. |

why settle for a tired retread who was barely .500? who hasn't sniffed another head coaching job since he left the ny giants? i cannot see how we get better with him i cannot see how we improve on this season i think no one wants to work here which is why this search goes on and we settle
