Re: the first question, La Canfora had "league and team sources" cited in his blog, saying they were very interested in Cowher. Could have been wrong, but JLC doesn't get his scoop from Pro Football Weekly. He's got connections. Again, they could have been wrong.

The assistant head coach title thing would irk the Titans. They'd say it's basically the same position and raise a stink over the Skins using a straw man title to skirt the rules on asking for permission to interview. I think if he was coming to interview for Assistant Head Coach - Defense, you'd hear some squawking out of Tennessee.
Yeah but a lot of times his sources are just people who comment on situations and give their thoughts and aren't necessarily privy to any sort of true inside info.

The more I think about this, the more Assistant Head Coach - defense makes sense. This move could mean something for Greg Blache more than anything else.

Maybe retirement?

I think JLC said the other day that might be the case.
I suspect that once some matters with Williams are ironed out (if they are ironed out), he will be the head coach and Schwartz will be his numero dos.

But I don't know everything
Could it be that GW wants Saunders gone if he becomes HC? And that is why they are looking at Schwartz? Schwartz would come here only under the assumption that he keeps the offensive coaches in place?

Or is it that Snyder just doesn't like Williams which is the rumor.

Re: May the Schwartz be with you?

I know there was a bit of apprehension on GW's part when Saunders was first brought in. He felt that the offense was too "quick strike". He was concerned that his D would have to be on the field too much during a game because the offense would either turn the ball over quickly, or score quickly.

Re: May the Schwartz be with you?

UGH! I don't effin know! On one hand, why would Jeff Fisher let Schwartz interview for essentially a lateral move? On the other hand, why would Danny bust up the whole coaching staff by making Schwartz HC after saying continuity was important to him?

The ultimate continuity move is make Schwartz DC, and move GW to head coach.

But then why the interest in Bill Cowher? Maybe Bill Cowher was Plan A, and since he's not interested, GW with Schwartz and Saunders is Plan B? Maybe the Cowher thing was bad rumor?

DAMMIT JUST PUT US OUT OF OUR MISERY, DANNY!

I seriously need to know who our coach is. I'm freakin out over here man!

Blache could technically remain as defensive coordinator, but I think he's gone.

This is just speculation but I really think Danny Smith might make his way on to the defensive coaching staff somehow. What you might see is Smith coaching the DBs, Jerry Gray bumped up to defensive coordinator and Schwartz as Assistant HC-Defense

12thMan 01-10-2008 03:46 PM

Re: May the Schwartz be with you?

I think much of this we're doing is speculation. Fact is, someone was going to be interviewed regardless. Whether it was Joe Schmoe, Joe Black, or Joe Blow....they have to go through this process. Gregg Williams understands it, everyone understands it.

They can't offer the job to Williams then interview people next. It's the process, so we're just going to have to sit and wait and not read too much into whomever they bring in. Unless it's a Bill Cowher, Peter Caroll, or some big name person, I wouldn't get too worked up over any of these names.

Hell during the combine, the Redskins interviewed Adrian Peterson for a draft possibility. It is what is.

Well there will be another 5 to 10 threads with someone new who could be the next HC of the skins. Until we here that the person is at Reskins Park then its just people guessing about who will be the next coach. Then the ones who guessed can gloat like Smootsmack about them mentioning the persons name.

#3 is pure speculation, the others are somewhat educated guesses.

But I also thought Gibbs would be back another year so...

Re: May the Schwartz be with you?

Here is a big question for all of you who keep saying if Greg Williams is going to be the new head coach, why doesn't Danny just go ahead and make hime the HC. Doesn't Danny HAVE to interview a minority? If so, then he can't just NAME Greg Williams the head coach, even if he already wants to? He may interview several assistants and other canidates before naming anyone, just so he can go through the process and see what's out there. Window Shopping, so to speak.

"By all accounts this is an interview for the head coaching gig. That's how everyone in this building is taking it. It's not being perceived as a chance to line up someone to make a lateral move (ie hire Schwartz to run the defense under Gregg Williams but give him more money and a better title than he has with the Titans). If that is to the contrary I will let you know, but without a doubt the vibe here is that this is the start of the process to see who will replace Joe Gibbs."

Re: May the Schwartz be with you?

I think GW may want to be able to pick his own staff, from top to bottom. That means a new OC, assuming he's not into Saunders. But that kills your continuity on offense, with a young QB just learning a complex system. So that's a big strike against GW. And he's a proud man. He may be ok taking orders from JGG, but not from little Danny-Boy. So GW is on the outs.

So, now what? 2 options: promote Al to HC, and pick the DC who most resembles GW, but has good upside as a young star: Schwartz-man. Or, hire young Schwartz-man as HC, but dictate that Al must stay as OC--he is under contract for mucho scratch. Since Schwartz is young, he's ok wth dealing with Danny. Plus, this will be the first HC that's actually younger than Danny himself, so Danny will like that. And Al stays on to get the offense rolling with JC.

Somewhere in all this, we interview a minority candidate, to fulfill our Rooney obligations but in complete violation of the spirit of the rule. Oh, well.

I'm hoping that the interview with Schwartz was simply an attempt to gain leverage in negotiations with Grilliams' peeps.

SCHWARTZ MAKES THE ROUNDS

Titans defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz has been linked to the three NFL head-coaching vacancies.

Most recently, Schwartz has been asked to sit for the Dolphins' job. So why would Schwartz do it, given that it's widely believed that the job will go to Cowboys' assistant head coach/offensive line coach Tony Sparano?

For Schwartz, the benefit is that it keeps his name in the mix for other jobs that might come available in the future. For the Fins, the ongoing interviews tend to dispel the notion that the Sparano hire is a done deal.

We've also heard that some teams will interview certain candidates for the purposes of getting information about their current teams, and that some candidates are willing to sing like liquored up canaries.

Schwartz also has been identified as a candidate for the Redskins' job. He previously was named as a person who'll interview for the gig in Atlanta.

Contrary to reports from earlier in the week, we've heard that Schwartz is not a candidate for the Ravens' job. He previously worked for the Ravens/Browns, and the team's lack of interest is unclear.

Not a bad theory. I'm beginning to think any coach hired is going to have both hands tied to his left foot. The candidate is going to have to agree to keep the team and staff relatively intact. The front office should be aware that to drastically change the team be it on the coaching or player level will be devastating to the psyche of our "core" guys.

Perhaps the leverage isn't about money but making sure GW doesn't do any major house cleaning. If he's not interested, well they've got alist of guys currently being interviewed. Someone will agree to "Wade Philips it"

Re: May the Schwartz be with you?

An update on Schwartz:

Jim Schwartz, the Tennessee Titans defensive coordinator, has emerged as the frontrunner for the Washington Redskins head coaching position.

A league source says that Schwartz interviewed Thursday with Washington in “blew them away.”

Former Redskins quarterback and ESPN analyst Joe Theismann is acting as an advisor in the Redskins search process.

If the 41-year-old Schwartz gets the position, that would likely mean a change of venue for current Washington defensive coordinator Gregg Williams. When Joe Gibbs suddenly retired earlier in the week, it was assumed by many Williams would skate into the head job. But Schwartz, who got some run as a head coaching candidate in 2005 and nearly got the San Francisco job, has apparently overtaken Williams.

Williams, ironically, was the defensive coordinator in Tennessee before Schwartz succeeded him in 2001. Williams went on at that point to become the Buffalo Bills head coach.

Schwartz is a local guy for the Redskins. A native of Baltimore, he went to Georgetown and his first job out of school was as a grad assistant at the University of Maryland. He also worked as a scout for Bill Belichick in Belichick’s final two seasons in Cleveland before moving with the Browns to Baltimore. He joined the Titans in 1999.

Schwartz is also in the mix for the Falcons head coaching position. According to the Florida Sun Sentinel, is scheduled to meet with Atlanta Friday and the Dolphins on Monday.

Maybe not. Although I am wanting Williams as our Head Coach, there are a few things to consider about Schawrtz:

1. He's up there with Gregg Williams as being a defensive genius.
2. He's a young guy. Heck he'd be around the same age as when Joe Gibbs first came to Washington, so if he gets the job and happens to be successful, we could have him for many years to come.
3. I have no basis to prove this, but I just believe it would be likely that he'd probably keep the current coaching staff intact on the offensive side of the ball. That is something that I feel is vital for Jason Campbell.

I don't know, I don't really get the feeling that it would be a bad move, but I still prefer Gregg Williams.

MTK 01-10-2008 08:48 PM

Re: May the Schwartz be with you?

This is interesting that's for sure. I honestly don't know much about Schwartz... but it is refreshing that Snyder is going outside the box a bit (for him at least) and looking at candidates that aren't the typical big names he's gone after in the past.

Perhaps he really has learned some patience and would like to hire a guy that can be around for a while... or maybe he just wants a coach in place that's not going to want a piece of the front office decision making process.

Longtimefan 01-10-2008 08:49 PM

Re: May the Schwartz be with you?

I'm reminded of the last time we had a head coach vacancy in 04 before Gibbs decided to return. We went through the interview process with Jim Fossel, Ray Rhodes, and Dennis Green, none of whom returned. Just because Schwartz interviewed, dosen't mean a thing, he could have actually sucked the tile off the floor for all we know.

I'm content to let the process play itself out and see what happens.

Haven't been here for a while because I was on assignment. I'm happy to be back however, and look foreward to exchanging some more thoughts and ideas.
