Denver cornerback Dre Bly, who the Redskins attempted to acquire last week and who has told several people he wants to play for Washington, could become available again. The Broncos, who already have three quality cornerbacks, have a free agent visit set up with corner David Macklin, according to reports, and should they sign him it could be a precursor to a Bly trade. The Redskins are seeking additional picks in this draft and are interested in trading down from the sixth overall pick, while the Broncos could entertain moving up. . . .

Once it was clear Bly was going to Denver, the Redskins tried to work out a swap with them, but according to a source, the Redskins asked for cap help deferring the costs of trading Springs ($7.5 million) and Denver refuses (the Broncos did not have a ton of space, either).[/FONT]
[FONT=Times New Roman,times,serif]However, the Broncos have been unwilling to extend Bly's contract, which has one year and $4.2 million remaining. Bly has told numerous other NFL players that Redskins owner Daniel Snyder, in the course of trade talks, was willing to give Bly a new contract including a lucrative signing bonus, and Bly has expressed his concern with remaining a Bronco with several of his new teammates in Denver. He's from Chesapeake, VA, wants to be here and wants that new contract. His agent, Kennard McGuire, initially declined to comment on the matter.[/FONT]
[FONT=Times New Roman,times,serif]Springs, meantime, has ties to the staffs of both Denver and Detroit, and has said he will not take a pay cut to remain a Redskin this season (he is due to make $6.8 million and carries a high $7.3 million cap figure, which the Redskins have been eager to trim). The team approached Springs about taking a salary cut to remain here earlier this offseason, and he refused; his cap figures are huge each of the next three seasons and some team officials have expressed concerns about his age and injury history.[/FONT]
[FONT=Times New Roman,times,serif]Sources close to Springs say he remains unsure about his status with the Redskins despite Coach Joe Gibbs saying repeated that he is "counting on Springs" for next season. Denver Coach Mike Shanahan is a big proponent of Springs's play, according to a source, and the Broncos and Redskins have completed trades in each of the past three years and are among the most aggressive teams in the NFL when it comes to swapping players. The Redskins remain very interested in dropping down from the sixth overall pick to acquire additional selections in this year's draft, and the possibility exists of another deal this offseason involving the cornerbacks and/or draft picks.[/FONT]
[FONT=Times New Roman,times,serif]A trade after June 1 would cost the Redskins just $2.5 million in a cap hit on Springs (with $5 million coming in 2008). Springs is also considering approaching the Redskins about possibility relinquishing several million dollars in deferred payments still owed him in order to facilitate his possible trade or release. Many members of the Redskins staff are thrilled with the possibility of a cornerback trio of Springs, free-agent signing Fred Smoot and youngster Carlos Rogers, but should Bly attempt to force his way out of Denver, the situation bears monitoring, with the huge free agent contracts being thrown around this offseason not going unnoticed by Bly or Springs.[/FONT]
[FONT=Times New Roman,times,serif]So keep an eye on this one folks. I think there is still a chance for more trade talks to resume. The Broncos are also very high on Ladell Betts, and could make a play in that direction as well as they entertain other RB options. Definitely something I will be monitoring.[/FONT]

Here's the thing that bothers me about losing Springs: Who will captain the secondary? Rogers? Taylor? Arch? Smoot? (<--mmm...maybe). The Skins secondary will be no better than last year without a veteran leader in the secondary. We'll look like a watered down USA Olympic basketball team out there.

I think the idea is to gain picks, not lose them. Something like Springs and the #6 for Bly, the #21, and the #56. Even then I'd probably still ask for something more

I'm surprised that Springs doesn't want to stay in Washington, VERY surprised. He seems like such a Redskin guy... and I know Spring and ST have a good friendship and he helps him out a lot on the field.... hmmmmm...??? I don't like the idea of Bly coming on board if it means Springs must go. I don't like it at all.

The only similarities here are that both wear #24 & that both were asked to play for what they felt is below their market value.
Don't give Springs too much credit in wanting to play for a winner, he wants to get paid while the market is hot, can't blame him.
Also can't blame him for being offended at being asked to take a pay cut. His salary isn't that huge compared to what guys are making this year in free agency. If the team can ask him to take a pay cut, why can't he ask the team to let him go?
Springs is a local guy & has been a team leader, I would much rather keep him for chemistry's sake than have Bly.
Bly is from Chesapeake, VA & that's part of the reason he wants to come to the Skins.
I hope they haven't pissed Springs off beyond repair to where he demands a trade. It's not good for the team when a popular guy leaves on bad terms. The Lavar situation was more complex, and he made it easier for the team to let him go cause he ran his mouth a lot, but Springs has been a model teamate from all I can see.
Right now it seems both sides are in a standoff; Springs wants to test the market but the Skins won't let him go, the skins want him to take a pay cut but he won't. If a trade isn't done around the draft, June 1 we may decide to let him go like coles (meaning taking the cap hit) if the situation is irreparable.
I hope Gibbs can smooth this over, but that will be hard after he's already asked him to take a cut.

Well if you rushed (or were pushed) back from an injury to your legs by the team and then they asked you to take less money the next year, would you be happy about it?

Here is my resolution. Pay Springs his salary this year. He will be playing for a contract because he knows it is essentially a contract year. Cut him next after we win the Super Bowl when the move would save us 5 million or so on the cap and fly in Bly (or a better UFA corner) next year on the first signing day!

All I have to say to that is - THEN DON'T ASK HIM TO TAKE A CUT. Some players are worth whatever it takes to keep them around, and I think he's one of them.

Agreed. Springs has played most of all his seasons except for the last one where he got surgery just before the season. He'll be injured 2-3 games and around for the rest. Bly has only a year left, and if he really wants to be a Skin we can pick him up next year.
