Re: Name controversy
I sorta like the idea of being called the warriors, but not in the N.American tradition but rather the classic movie from the '70's about the gangs of NY.

Re: Name controversy
I have said this often to friends. The Cleveland Indians logo could be seen as offensive, but not their name. I don't hear anything about them and any problems with their name situation. Our logo is one of the most recognizable in pro sports. The indian portrait is a regal rendering of a native american and being part indian, have no problem with it at all, and in fact am proud such a symbol is seen weekly throughout the world. However the name "Redskins" seems to rankle maybe 1% of the Native American Indian community. PC has gone way too far. Is the Kansas City Chiefs name in jeopardy? I have a deep aversion to cowboys and the silly hats they wear and the way they treat animals at the rodeos and find their practices offensive, but am I crying foul? Lets all grow up and cut the PC crap now before they take every last ounce of the freedoms the constitution allows from us (this is starting to sound like Bluto Blutarsky's speech in Animal House...sorry about that). Lets just lighten up...thats all.

Re: Name controversy
My step-grandfather, Joe Little Twig , played pro-football for the Oorang Indians team and the Rock Island Independents. Both teams had Jim Thorpe on their roster. This was in 1923 &1924. The family tells me he also played for the Canton Bulldogs (of this I can find no record).
As many may know, the Pro-Football Hall of Fame was established in Canton in honor of the Canton Bulldogs and Canton’s role in the league. Sorry I’m starting to ramble! Anyway, I said all that to say this- My Aunt who is half Indian, as well as the rest of our family (which also includes Indian ancestory I’m told) are all Redskin fans. Never in my 52 years of life, did I ever hear any family member complain about the “Redskins” team name. My Aunt is one of the biggest fans! If you want to find something to be offended about, you can. Unfortunatly some seem to find their “self-worth” in being offended. There is a good article (except for the last line) at The Conservative Voice . Com that states in part- According to a paper by Ives Goddard (senior linguist in the Department of Anthropology, National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution), the term “redskin” was first coined by American Indian tribes and was not a derogatory term. It was instead used simply to distinguish between American Indians (“red skinned men”) and European settlers (“white skinned men”). My Name is WAMO and I’m offended by Frisbees! See what I mean? Hail to the REDSKINS!!! |
Sigh, having trouble posting (I've had 2 posts disappear). Anyways:
"I met native americans who found the term "redskins" comparable to the "N" word. They felt it demonized and dehumanized there race. I don't feel the redskins as an organization at all perpetuate this belief but I sympathize with these folks." First off, I don't believe you. Second, over 90% of Native Americans are unoffended by the name of our team (Source: 'Redskins' mascot acceptable, poll says - NFC East - MSNBC.com) This new lawsuit is the result of some overeager attorneys tricking a bunch of young Native Americans into a losing lawsuit. It failed in the past because the statute of limitations had passed years ago on this issue. If it was so offensive there should've been more than two lawsuits between 197x and 2006. This is a non-issue.
The fact that you don't believe me doesn't change the fact I worked with multiple native americans who found the term redskin offensive or at least somewhat discomforting. I don't know whats wrong or right but to say you don't believe what I'm saying is ill conceived and meritless. I didn't say the entire native american population voted 100% this was offensive I said in my personal experience there was at least several native americans who did not like the term redskin. I recommend you think your post through because to impart disbelief so as to not face the issue is just skirting the issue. No group in the history of our nation has been screwed as bad as these people so to call this a non-issue and say this isn't offensive to at least some people doesn't work. |
Re: Name controversy
