Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread
Just hope the oline is decent this year. It would be such a travesty if Howell didn't have a lot of time to throw, especially with all our weapons. Eager to see if we sign anyone else before/during camp for oline.

Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread
Lotta folks talking about Khaleke Hudson
Hudson, a backup/special-teamer in his first three seasons, worked with the starters during the spring in part because Jamin Davis was recovering from offseason knee surgery and free agent signee Cody Barton was working with the backups as he learned the defense. Hudson impressed the coaches, however, building on a successful start in the regular-season finale. He played fast this spring — as he did in the finale against Dallas. While Washington entered the offseason wanting to improve its linebacker depth, Hudson’s one-game performance, as well as this spring, put that quest on hold. Great sign |

Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread
Jadeveon Clowney folks?
Being linked to us as a rotational piece, I’d say bring him in |
Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread
I've no issue with trying Clowney out as cover, but does that then suggest a) we can't rely upon Young (or want to trade him) and/or b) that the depth we currently have isn't up to it?

Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread
From The Athletic (and I think this is fair, and the thing I am probably worried about the most):
Washington Commanders Has the offensive line improved enough? “Enough” acknowledges some boost from the team moving on from last season’s older starting guards — Andrew Norwell will be released once healthy — and adding new personnel. Yet, virtually no Pro Bowl potential exists among the starters, and only left tackle Charles Leno is a definitive steady option. Let’s see how new right tackle Andrew Wylie (nine sacks allowed in 2022) performs with Sam Howell behind him instead of Super Bowl MVP/QB magician Patrick Mahomes, or Sam Cosmi takes to right guard duties or free-agent signee Nick Gates thrives at center or if the left guard battle between Saahdiq Charles and Chris Paul produces a definitive or default victor. Rookie center Ricky Stromberg and fourth-round tackle Braeden Daniels might be long-term answers, but 2023 may turn into redshirt seasons. Washington needs robust work from the OL right away. — Ben Standig |
Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread
Other than the QB, the offensive line is definitely THE major question mark in my opinion. I think they are a better group, but that isn't saying much, and they are probably an injury or two away from being a liability.
|
Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread
I'm more worried about the offensive line than I am about Howell. I think they'll be an improvement over last year, but that's a low bar, and doesn't mean they will play well. Hopefully they can be league average. I'd take that.
|
Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread
Given the OL is still suspect, is there anybody remaining available as an FA worth picking up? There are still some guys unsigned, but are any of them better than what we have or worth signing at this point? I daresay we'll be looking at the guys that wash out of others camps down the line, so just sit and wait or pick up another name or 2 before camp?
|
Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread
I think Dalton Risner would be worth looking at. Not sure why he's still a FA. He's no All Pro, but could certainly compete with who we have currently.
|
Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread
Rumours circulating about Risner being looked at by multiple teams. https://www.si.com/nfl/broncos/news/dalton-risner-rumor-serious-interest
I'd give him a look as he's probably as good as if not better than what we have. |
Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread
I don't think our OL is nearly good enough to not consider all potential upgrades.

Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread
Research question - > our defense was 3rd in yds allowed and 9th in points, how good was our defense really?
Well our defense benefited alot from dominating in time of possession all season, really shortening the game to protect our anemic offense….NOW, I dove deeper in what I think is a VERY strong statistical measure of a strong defense….Third down % conversion….we were #1 last year at 31.8%. Quite some distance from second place, and all top defenses in the top 10….believe it or not, it’s the 2nd lowest third down rate recorded in the last 4 years (2019 patriots 31.11%)…pats won Super Bowl that year I believe…. What I’m saying is our defense is LEGIT already, now add a healthy chase young, p Mathis….and Forbes/Martin to a secondary…maybe our offense can build a decent lead once in a while with EB…now our defense can play a one dimensial offense, now our D can really tee off and force turnovers/sacks….AND stay fresher too…I’m excited and we have a legit D coordinator who knows what he’s doing |
Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread
I think the defense can be legit, but it won't matter much if the offense doesn't take a big step forward. I'm cautiously optimistic that will happen - eventually, but expecting that out of the gate is a bit unrealistic to me.

Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread
If Sam Howell and the OL can both be adequate, we're a possible playoff team. If 1 is above adequate and 1 is adequate, I believe we make the playoffs.
Any type of combo below those levels, gonna be a disappointing season. I have faith in Howell, the OL is a big question mark imo. I like the right side if Cosmi can stay healthy (but he hasn't yet). Center thru LT, I have concerns. Mainly at C and LG. Is Gates fully back, do we actually have a starting LG? I think Leno is young enough to have a bounce back season. |

Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread
I read a PFF assessment of each of our units on O and D. The author judged that our team would be solid across the board except for the QB position. I think that is a fair opinion due to the fact that Howell is still unproven over the course of an entire season. So we'll see what happens.
Personally, I think EB's style of offense will make a major difference for our team. That and my belief that we have numerous young players with significant upside potential, chief among them being Chase Young. |

One thing that does make me more optimistic about the offense, apart from the addition of EB, is that BRob will start the season healthy, as opposed to with multiple gunshot wounds. A very stiff D and stout running game is a good combination, and I think EB will find ways to make our running game more imaginative, including by using Gibson as a receiver more often. But mostly this week, I am holding my breath and waiting to hear that the sale is completed and that we will never have to hear about Snyder again. THAT is winning off the field, as far as I am concerned. |

No question, we need a real competition for the position. |
Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread
Most media outlets have this team around 6 wins. I think the Howell transition is the main reason. The talent is there on offense to win 8-9 games there is no excuse.
If they finish last in the east again Ron is out Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread
As much as I hate to admit it, the predictions seem fair to me. But I agree with your notion - we definitely have the talents to win 8-9 games (or even more), also Rivera said that we have the talents we need to win games per Keim's report so this is do or die year for Rivera.
Although I wonder if the new owner group would feel inclined to allow Rivera stay for the entire contract since I imagine they have been learning a lot about what Rivera had to deal with ever since he became our coach. |

I guess no one wants Carson Wentz. He remains unsigned.
|
Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread
It's a great day to be alive. I love y'all.
Carson Wentz is officially a Canadian Football League quality QB now. I'm sure he'll get an opportunity in the NFL again this season though. Someone will get hurt and he'll step in as Shitty QB1 or Mediocre QB2. |
Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread
The best part about this season is knowing next season will be better!
17 games to answer the following: Is Howell the guy? How much is Chase an elite pass rusher and can he stay health? Is Bienemy our next HC? Realistically, Howell is going to get killed behind this OLine. Hopefully everyone avoids major injuries. |
Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread
Let's fucking go! My boy in Denver has tickets to the game against the Commanders. Free ticket if I fly out. I'm flying out! Gonna be my 2nd Washington game ever.

My biggest concern, can the Oline rebound from last year. As a skins fan we take pride in strong line play, but Ron most fireable offense was his clown effort bringing in washed up panthers guards last year. That really pissed me the fuck off |
