What if now Titans make him their DC? Do we get that 3rd round comp pick? How did an asst get poached from us for a lateral move? |
Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread
Good stuff from Keim and jordan Reid (not the TE)
The jury is still out as to whether we have solved the QB riddle, and the offensive line needs some attention this offseason, but it's no secret this offense has the talent to succeed. We just need an OC that can get it going so this team can finally play complementary football consistently.
Here is the list of who I am tracking as potential OCs - they have either interviewed already or are scheduled to. Thomas Brown - Los Angeles Rams asst. HC/TE coach Pat Shurmur - Former Denver Broncos OC/Giants, Browns head coach Ken Zampese - Commanders QB coach Charles London - Atlanta Falcons QBs coach Eric Studesville - Dolphins asst. HC/RB coach Other? Curious what everyone's thoughts are about these guys. Do you have a favorite? Who do you think it will ultimately be?
Here are my rankings: Everybody else > Ken Zampese Speaking of Ken Zampese, here is what Albert Breer is hearing! I can only speak for myself but the names Pat Shurmur and Ken Zampese aren't what comes to mind when I think of modern offensive coordinators that know how to maximize production out of their personnel. |
Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread
Shurmur has a reputation as a QB coach and OC. His principle failure was in being a head coach.
As for Zampese, that would feel like another "comfort" hire by Ron. Don't think it would move the team forward in any meaningful way. Ron has to win this year, it is going to be a gamble for him to figure out which option will give him the best short term results |
Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread
Of course right now there are 15 OC positions (10 plus the 5 for HC changes) out there and some OC positions will open up as a result of the HC hires. With so many openings many of the young up and comers will have many better options than a one year deal in Washington. There will be some left over when the music stops, but we will be last in the queue to teams offering 4/5 year contracts. It may end up that Shurmur and Zampese are the only ones left who want the job.

Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread
Commanders are projected to get compensatory picks in the 3rd and 6th rounds for losing Schreff and Settle. Not bad.

Yeah, that 3rd round comp pick is huge. That's someone that should definitely contribute in 2023. |

I'm sure that factored into the price they paid - they were probably anticipating a third rounder for him. |

Well not quite. It is about 15-20 picks lower. |

Some chatter that Greg Roman is the favorite for the OC job.. Not a huge fan of that

I think it's a good fit. We will likely have a lower level veteran starting or a 5th round pick with 1 game of experience. Being able to lien on the run game should be helpful, either way. Roman hasn't ever had McLaurin, Dotson, Samuel either. He will probably faint from excitement his 1st practice here. Like wow, a real beast WR room to work with? Sweet. |
Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread
Roman loves the running game and he's one of the best in the biz if that's what you're looking for. The passing game though... players aren't big fans of him in that area.
@RGIII Greg Roman may be of the greatest run game tacticians I have ever been around at the NFL level. RBs and TEs love his system because they EAT. WRs absolutely hate it. That’s why free agent WRs didn’t want to go to or stay in Baltimore. It was never about Lamar Jackson.
|
Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread
If Sam Howell ends up being the starter next season, and Roman ends up being the OC...it could actually be really good for both of them. I watched every game of Howell at UNC...his first 2 seasons is when they had Michael Carter and Javonte Williams as the RBs and they were run first offense and it worked well...those RBs rolled...and then some play action where Howell would hit Dyami Brown in stride 40 yards down the field for a TD. Not to mention Sam can run for some tough yards as well...but he's no Lamar or Hurts...more like Josh Allen running but he's not as tall obviously....but tough kid.
