I hope he balls the fuck out. Man, it would be nice to not be involved in off-season trade rumors for another cast-off.

This will be the 5th consecutive season we've started at least 3 different QBs.

wow! so you'd rather lose than win with this kid for a nobody draft pick down the road who may never pan out?

Let's hope Scott Turner is smart enough to run a balanced offense in order to take pressure off of the rookie QB.

The only reason Rivera is playing Sam Howell is because he is trying to take the heat off of himself after his poor decision to go with Wentz after benching Heinicke......Rivera is trying to take the heat off of himself.

Lose what?

I said beat Dallas, as in, I agree with you...

Some are worried about draft position. We could end up as high as 10 if we lose, or as low as 17 if we win. I say who cares...just beat Dallas, and look good doing it.

In reality it's probably going to be a shit show. It appears that anybody who is slightly injured is not gonna play, and a lot of young guys will be getting their chance. Dallas will probably roll us. I just hope he doesn't get hurt.

Re: The Sam Howell Thread

I don't remember where I saw that, just reading stuff today. Makes sense though. Why risk further injury in a meaningless game. Similar reason teams rest their starters in a meaningless game heading into the playoffs.

A lot of dudes not practicing today too - J Allen, S Charles, K Curl, J Davis, A Gibson, C Lucas, A Norwell, B Robinson, J Smith-Williams, B St-Juste, M Sweat, and the list goes on...

It kinda sucks that it's just this one game for Howell...and probably with a lot of starters not playing, AND behind this Oline with Dallas needing to win. I fear he'll try to do TOO much to prove himself and look bad in the process by forcing throws ie. Wentz-like. Or even worse he'll run a lot, because he can, and get himself hurt.

By now he has seen almost an entire season of two QBs who would probably have won more games if they had taken care of the ball and not try to do too much on their own. Hopefully he has learned from their mistakes.

He’s one tough SOB and a gamer, reminds me of Joey T. He’s not scared, that’s what I love about him, he’s the opposite of Wentz.

Howell most likely is going to have a rough day but I don't care. The kid has some potential and that's all they should want to see. Just sucks that he only has one game.

Re: The Sam Howell Thread

Start Howell
Keep Payne
Slide Cosmi over to Right Guard
Draft/Sign 2 T's/G/Back-Up C
Draft CB
Draft LB
Re-Sign Holcomb or sign another veteran LB
= Playoff team

If the floor for Sam Howell looks like his 1st game (pretty good minus 1 terrible throw in the end zone), I think we're really only a few pieces away from being a playoff team.

We have a one game sample size of Sam , let’s hold off putting him in the HoF

I bet I can find for each CW and TH one game in their careers where they played better then Sam did in his one game

Yeah one game where he was handcuffed and not asked to do a whole lot. I wish they put more on his plate and had him throw it around more.

There's no way anyone in the building looks at that performance and says that's it, he's our QB1.

I'd rather put him in the HoF, than sell the family house, farm, and dog for some fucking retread from another team. And I'm still signing a veteran QB and drafting a mid-round QB too for competition. But I think Howell would win that competition pretty easily if he gets the same number of reps.

I just don't see how you can look at that game, and not feel like Howell over Heinicke/Wentz will definitely be an improvement. Especially with another off-season under his belt.

We literally needed to win 1 more game to make the playoffs. Howell and a new OC is worth at least 1 more win in my eyes.

Chico23231 01-12-2023 09:36 AM

Re: The Sam Howell Thread

The positive is Howell put himself in the mix to start next season. That 60 air yard throw to Terry was beautiful…as were some of the timing throws and showing off he is a more natural runner than Heinike.

If he woulda sucked and went out and was a catastrophe…would felt more doom and gloom for the offseason. Gotta really wait on the OC coordinator choice.

I wonder if it was Turner who advised Howell wasn’t ready?

That's a pretty low bar you have to admit lol

Wentz and Heinicke were both bottom of the barrel in pretty much every QB metric this year. Wentz was ranked 31st on this list and Heinicke was 29th.

We have no idea off one game if Howell is better than these guys or will end up at the bottom of next year's list too.

It is a low bar. The bar is rolling on the ground lol. Would be a tough game of limbo to get underneath it.

Yeah, I can't point to any evidence that says over a full course of a season he will be definitely be a top 15-20 type QB. It's moreso just basing it off of him being a pretty damn good QB in college and me personally believing in his potential (game 18 was a part of this) to be a solid QB next year, that can continue to improve. If we had decent QB play last year, we're a playoff team. Just getting from bad to decent QB play should be enough to get to 9 or 10 wins next season.

This will be a conversation likely until after the draft. Anything could still happen at the QB spot.

He will if we can't get Lamar, I think he presser was telling in the fact that he said he wants a dynamic rushing attack. Either way I bet he pays for some QB this summer. Howell will have to earn the QB1 spot which is fine

I am not saying CW or TH are better options

Here is what we have
SH= positive question mark
TH= dud
CW= dud

sure keep SH but he is not at this point the answer.

If that story is true , just LOL

What fucking quality OC is going to be excited to come here and be told he has a one game wonder QB to work with.

Until this franchise is sold everything is moot; we are officially in the lame duck mode.

If i was a OC of any worth i wouldn't come here; this franchise could be sold tomorrow and RR and his staff asked to pack their shit and move on.

Nothing of substance can happen here until its sold. It be like if you and your wife were house shopping but also filed for divorce.

I think it just depends on that OC's evaluation of Howell. If he thinks he can work with him and this offense, then I believe it would be a good opportunity. If the franchise is sold the day after he comes aboard, who cares. He signed a contract, will be paid accordingly, and he can move on.

Great but they still want build a career; that would solve a short term problem (feeding your family) but if i was building a coaching career i want go somewhere where i could highlight my skill set and then eventually be promoted.

Re: The Sam Howell Thread

Well, that's exactly what could happen here. If someone accepts the OC position and has success with Howell (or whoever), is able to turn this into a top 15 offense in the league, he will get another opportunity elsewhere, if not here, with the potential to be promoted just like any successful OC.

Said this is another thread, but the quasi certainty of the HC being out next season might make the OC position even more attractive to someone confident he can have immediate success. Uncertainty ? Yes, for sure. But that can be said of a lot coordinator positions. And one other way to look at it could be "potential short cut to the HC job".
