Re: Jack Del Rio Thread
I hate the cap.
I really like Ryan Kerrigan and I would like him on the team. My problem is he is making a ton of money and at 31, wear and tear is starting to creep in and effect his production. By comparison Chase Young from Hyattsville, Md. is 20 years old, turning 21 in 2020. If Kerrigan agreed to a restructured deal that is more incentive driven to pay him big if he achieves on the field, but protects the cap if he does not, by all means stay. Same with Norman. Norman is not “great” anymore but if he took a pay cut I would like him to stay as a backup, maybe as slot CB? Quality depth is important, but at the right price. Trent Williams needs to show he is healthy. His knee is worrisome. Paul Richardson and Jordan Reed need to go! Jack Del Rio is a great hire. |
Re: Jack Del Rio Thread
I like this hire. Del Rio can run the D and Ron can run the team. AT Carolina, Ron was focused on calling the D. This allows him to run the team. He needs to focus on all areas of the team.
Now we need to nail down the OC position. |
Re: Jack Del Rio Thread
I didn't like Manusky's defenses either, but the sack rate ranked 4th in 2019.
https://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/dl/2019 That's not no pressure on the QB. I think it's more accurate to say the pressure was inconsistent, especially against good qbs who could beat a blitz. I can't find the numbers right off, those with a pff sub probably could, but I believe we blitzed alot. I also believe those blitz's weren't good against good QBs. I also don't believe the blitzes were coached well and timed well. Good teams picked them up. I also agree Del Rio is going to be a huge improvement. The two just have very different styles. Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
The Redskins had a great sack number but ultimately it meant NOTHING because the defense was rated 27th in the NFL. An example is Giant’s QB Jones who toasted us for FIVE TD passes - this is a rookie QB who struggled mightily against many other teams. The sack number tells me that we have the raw talent on our DL, if used properly. By going to a 4-3 we’ll properly use our DL talent, so that the EDGE rushers aren’t falling back into coverage instead of pressuring the QB. Blitzing or stunting just makes the QB’s analysis of the defense (right before the snap) that much more difficult. I don’t have any numbers to back up my assertion that the Redskins did not often blitz or stunt. If we draft Chase Young we won’t need to blitz very often, but by stunting a lot, the QB won’t be able to assume it’s just a normal 4 man rush. I believe we will see an immediate and substantial improvement in the defense under Del Rio / Rivera. Both coaches have taken bad defenses and made them elite quickly. I think our defense will take 2 years to get there. Getting Chase Young and some good FA in the backfield will have an immediate effect, but Manusky dug us a big hole to get out of. Re: Jack Del Rio Thread
Jack del Rio and 4-3 tip the Chase Young scales for me. I was thinking we had already invested enough draft capital in the DL for the moment and needed more picks. But the D and specifically the front four can be our defining identity and give our DB’s a lift. Rivera, JDR, and Hyattsville’s own can put a stamp on this team right away.

Re: Jack Del Rio Thread
Montez Sweat and Chase Young at the ends and Allen, Payne, Ionnadis, and Settle pushing the pocket up the middle. I am already drooling

Re: Jack Del Rio Thread
A 4-3 defense, man coverage, Chase Young and Jack Del Rio make me happy! It’s been over a decade since we had a good defense. I’m also tired of undisciplined and unprepared teams that fold every big game.
I believe this will all turn around this year, although I predict we’ll just be in the 8-8 range. Rome wasn’t built in a day, lol. But rebuilding the defense will be exciting to watch! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

We were last in the NFL in so many categories, turning that ship around just takes time! The culture of the Redskins for a long time has been that of a lazy, easily hurt, undisciplined, loser. Building a true, winning culture takes time, although it will be easier with a young, hungry team. Another reason to dump or trade most of our older FA. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Re: Jack Del Rio Thread
It's almost impossible to predict records for next season. None of us thought this was a
3-13 team, just like many thought the Browns would win 10 games. The league changes quickly |
Re: Jack Del Rio Thread
Have to get through free agency and the draft, not to mention see what the Giants and Cowboys do at head coach. Then we can start forming educated guesses about next season. Until then it's a wild ass guess. We're going to have so much cap space - we might end up with 5 new starters in free agency, who knows.

Re: Jack Del Rio Thread
Will you folks please stop advocating for cutting Ryan Kerrigan. He is still an above average player IMHO. Also, depth has been an ongoing problem for this team. We now have an opportunity to have outstanding depth on the DL and the ability to keep our D-Linemen fresh. And, yes, he can certainly play DE in a 4-3 on passing downs.
Ryan has already said he wants to be in D.C. and would work something out with the Skins in order to stay.
He seems to be Rodney Dangerfield to Redskin fans in here, he gets no respect. They want to throw him away for nothing. Two more sacks and he is the all time sack leader for the Redskins. He never missed a start since being drafted till last season. Then you have a guy who has averaged to miss 1/4 of the games over the last 4 years, didn't honor his contract and sat out, and the people around here want the new coach to beg that guy to come back. |
Re: Jack Del Rio Thread
Looooooove this hire. As always it depends on our quarterback play going forward. We have enough cap space and a high draft pick that we should be able to plug alot of holes. TE, secondary, edge rusher, oline. WR is set. D line is set. MLB probably needs to be addressed and Guice staying healthy is gonna be huge. But I love the two hires at HC and DC. HTTR!

I’m excited to see Guice and Love work in tandem and to lighten their running load. Still I think they will draft a RB from the depths and/or keep AP. We can’t trust Guice & Love to stay healthy for a season. I wonder if the increased discipline and harder practices & TC by Rivera /Del Rio will decrease the number of injuries during the season. I think there has got to be a reason so many Redskins have been hurt over the last three years. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

thumbs up for Del Rio. Between himself and Riverboat we get instant discipline that has been lacking severely with Jay and Manfluffy

Jack Del Rio Thread
It will be a real treat to see a highly disciplined team after the cupcake style of leadership with Jay. I never thought the HC who wants to be like a buddy, Santa Claus, and just a super chill friend would ever work. I like leaders with real FIRE [emoji91] and who are masters at motivating their people and who work hard to get the most out of every single player. How many times did we see the Redskins come out super flat in a ”must win” game. How many games in the last 6 years did we see the team come out after the half and do poorly?? This team will get far better EVEN WITH THE SAME PLAYERS, just with proper leadership, increased motivation and far better coaching, instruction and discipline.

I agree. I watched many of his games since my high school teammate was the starting QB at USC when Jack was playing there. I love this combination of Rivera & Del Rio. As a very long time fan of the Redskins, there hasn't been much to cheer for in recent years, but I believe these two coaches are going to turn that around this year. Hail to the Redskins! |

Seems like teams are calling quick pass plays against our D to negate the pass rush and pressure. I think the DL is really helping the secondary.
complimentary football. finally. |

Just listening to Cooley's film breakdown of the D and he had glowing reviews of Everett and Curl. He said Everett played like a pro bowler against Dallas.

Once teams get a good lead, there's less chance of a turnover, never mind the clock being chewed up. :| |
Re: Jack Del Rio Thread
Jack Del Rio has brought this defense out of the depths of ineptitude to the top 10 defenses in the NFL. UNFORTUNATELY, the offense has way too many “3 and outs” and forces the defense to be on the field too much.
The team needs help at LB and Safety. When those holes are filled this defense will be top 5. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
