If this opens, check out Harris running wide open to the corner, Alex looked his way at first and then came back to him too late. This is the Smith we feared would come to Washington, we need that gun slinger Smith from KC. |
You forgot a few things:
- Never wins more than 9 games in a season. - Doesn't score any points in the 3rd quarter. - Goes 9 or 10 quarters in a row without scoring a TD on offense. - Never seems to win on the national stage. - Hires top assistants but still can't play pass coverages or pickup DL stunts. - etc., etc, etc.
Yeah, it wasn't a complete list. But on a game by game basis over a season, they stick out the most to me. |
What happens when it's 2nd and 11? It's easy to say "run the ball!" We're not the Saints but we're also not the 91 Redskins. We aren't good enough to just show up and run people over. We have to have balance. We have to get the ball to Reed who has been a non factor.
1st down play calling in general has been a huge issue. By hook or crook we need to find better ways to improve our per play average on 1st down. 2nd and 4, the whole playbook is open. 2nd and 8, its typically going to be a pass, especially with Gruden. Balance in the run pass and balance on what downs we do them would be nice. Gruden just gives up on the run too easily. |

On Cooley's old, he would lament Gruden sticking with the "duo" run play over and over despite the lack of success. So sick of it. With regard to your second point, I like the idea of balance in the abstract because balance represents the notion you mention, being able to draw from the entire playbook. I like, however, the how the patriots are willing to completely disregard the notion of balance for the sake of balance. They find a defense's weakness and exploit it over and over until the D adjusts. Whether it's running 4 draws in a row or 5 short in routes in a row, they try to step on the D's neck. So according to Dan Steinbergh, Josh Norman is becoming somewhat of a cancer on the team:
So here's something. Kevin Sheehan, longtime host of the Skins pregame show, reported on his podcast today that Josh Norman was benched last week for not taking his headphones off during Gruden's halftime talk. Here's Sheehan's report. Listen here twitter.com/kevinsheehanDC… |

If we could run the same play(s) over and over with success, I'd love it, but we haven't proven we can do that. I'm not sure what our go to play or type play even is. I miss when it was letting Jordan Reed dominate (when actually playing). |
Hey, everyone. I'm sorry you lost for several reasons. Wanted you to beat a division rival, and I know the Skins will play extra hard after the loss, but also, I wanted you guys in a good mood so we could enjoy chatting about our game.

That really scares me about this week. I think we'll see your best.
Welcome back Coffee. I appreciate what you’re saying - a team that just got humiliated (and boy did we) ought to be a dangerous team. Truth is, none of us knows which Redskins team will show up. The Panthers, on the other hand, will run hard and play hard on D. Every week. Still, you nearly lost at home to a lousy Giants team. But it’s hard to think the matchup doesn’t favor your squad. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Thanks, Calia. The problem with the Panthers is, even when the better team, they let the other team stick around. It bites us in the butt costing the game a time or two each year, and we're always having to pull out last minute wins in the ones we do win. So, I think you're right that Carolina SHOULD win (based on records and last week's games), but this is set up perfectly for your guys to take it from us. |

No offense, but I hope so. Every game's important, but we're in such a fight to keep up with the Saints and at a pivotal point where we see what we really have as we get a few guys back from injury/suspension. Based on our respective divisions, I think a loss actually hurts Carolina worse than it does Washington. (And thank you for the invite, but my family lost everything to dad's gambling when I was a kid, so I'm not one to make even friendly wagers. That is NOT correction to you; just explanation.) |
Re: Panthers Pre game thread
I saw a stat yesterday that said the Skins are 8-2 the last 5 years following games in which they lost by 10 more more

So you're saying Smith is done, washed up, and simply can't play anymore? Because that was Brunell in '06. I definitely don't agree with that. |

Absolutely hated Brunell, still dont understand Gibbs bringing him in without a physical or tryout. It's only been 4 games,no way Smith has been as bad as Brunell was, plus our receivers scare nobody, who was excited about the Richardson signing? Nobody! Doctson is shit,Jameson is not the same guy from 2 years ago. |
Re: Panthers Pre game thread
I look for the defense to set the tone tomorrow...I want to see some panthers getting knocked the fuck out.

Re: Panthers Pre game thread
Offensively we need a heavy dose of Reed and Thompson. Gotta get your best playmakers involved early and often.
|
Re: Panthers Pre game thread
For some reason, Carolina's always held AD in check, but I won't be surprised if Smith is able to pick us apart.
On offense, we've got some exciting parts in the mix but I think we'll show some rust from Greg Olsen (if he plays) and none of our receivers are spectacular. We have a couple that really have that potential but aren't there yet. We have enough misdirection success that I think we'll keep the chains moving until we stop ourselves (which is happening way too frequently... but I think some of that is getting used to the new offensive coordinator). |

I definitely don't agree with that.
I am happy to eat crow and admit I was wrong if I end up being wrong. I don't think Alex is totally washed up, but i think he is for sure on the "back nine" of his career, and the most we could have hoped for out of him was being a high level game manager. I never felt like he was an upgrade over Kirk. |

If that story about Norman is true then that to me says he shouldn't be on the team anymore. It's time to move on. Guys like that are a cancer. And shame on Gruden for benching him for only a series. If Norman did that and was on the Patriots, what would happen?

On Thompson, that was all on Smith. He threw him into that injury no doubt. High ball on a slant at the goal line. At Thompson’s size I’m surprised he wasn’t sawed in half. |

He wouldn’t try it on the Patriots because everyone knows Bill don’t take no shit. Norman’s gotta go and so does Jay. |
Re: Panthers Pre game thread
Yes I remember that stat. We were 2-1, running the ball produces winning football.
Monday we couldn’t run the ball and Alex pass attempts were the highest of the season. That is losing football. Not hard folks, not hard at all.
Up here in Baltimore they are always throwing out a stat about Joe Flacco. The Ravens record when he makes under 35 attempts is well over 0.600, when he attempts greater than 40 passes the Ravens have a losing record. Alex I feel is in the same mold. Keep the attempts down get the run game going and open up some passing lanes. |

Carolina 27 Skins 13
We are going to struggle to score. The few fans that show up turn on the Redskins. Lot's of boo's today. |

Re: Panthers Pre game thread
We don't have our 3rd down back aka leading receiver and our slot WR and we never beat Carolina. Yeah, this game is going to be ugly and I shouldn't go watch. But I'm a masochist, so I'll be at the bar watching (would be on TV if Chargers didn't have east coast road game). Of course, they'll probably play great and dominate, because no one really knows what team is showing up any given week (a Gruden Special). I didn't think we'd beat Green Bay either.
