Don't think we will carry 4 RBs on the roster.
Right. 5 offensive backs.

And if they need an extra roster spot to start the year, you don't need more than two of our RBs active for any one game. So theoretically, Royster could be on the practice squad and still RB no. 3. It's been done before for Shanahan.

Re: Darrel Young - Rising Star?

If there's only going to be 25 offensive guys, it sure looks like Sellers v. Torain for that last spot. Sellers is just a special teamer and goal line player right now, but I think the organization's hope is that Torain might have some trade value.

I'll be watching tomorrow to see if Stallworth or Niles Paul makes a push for a spot with the receivers. Really, Stallworth's only chance to go against the ones in the preseason will come tomrrow. If he beats Chris Carr a couple times, I might buy his shot at the roster over someone like Austin. Right now, I've seen more out of Armstrong than I've seen out of Stallworth.

I just want to give a shout-out to Darrel Young. He's no longer a rising star, he is a star! Most definitly a pro-bowler. I love how he attacks the line and anyone in his way whether it be a DE, LB, or a DB and and how he finishes. What a fantastic FB and really the key to Morris and RG3's success.

Big-ups!

He's having a really nice year. Great find by the FO. We're really developing a nice young core of weapons on offense.

Good thread bump. Yeah, DY is impressive in all phases, even as a receiver. Good job DY and good job FO.

Re: Darrel Young - Rising Star?

Beast, one play Monday night really stuck out to me.

A Morris run of maybe 8-10 yards out of the Pistol. It was our basic toss sweep right to Young's side. Young shot through the hole created by the line to directly blow up the LOLB. The speed and power he crashed through with opened the large hole for Morris to get to the second level of the defense. What impresses me was the speed he came through with to get to the second level.

He is a beast with his run blocking, and I have always paid attention to him. He has the power and speed that Sellers was losing the last couple of years here.

Excellent move by the FO to transition him to FB. Perfect fit for what Shanny wants the guys to do in his system.

On another note I really liked listening to Steve Young break down our offense Monday night pre and post game. To hear the little inside details about Mike's system from a guy who was very successful in it should give us all hope that with RG III and MS there is a combination there to get all of the stakeholders of the Redskins to right where we all want to be. Hoisting Lombardi trophies again.

Wait. Fire Mike Shanahan right?

Amazing what 3 straight wins does.

More like somewhat of a vindication for those of us who have been saying to stay the course.

Still a lot of football to play yet, and those three straight wins weren't vs a bunch of low level teams. It has been a while since this team won three straight division games in so many weeks.

I liked Sellers a lot, but towards the end of his time here in Washington, I got a bit tired of his short yardage runs where he would jump up and come straight back down in the same spot.

Sellers was overrated as a short yardage back.

Just because a guy is big doesn't mean he's good in that situation. Just look at one of the best of all time at the goal line in Marcus Allen.

well if we keep losing LBs, maybe we can pull an Owen Marecic and DY plays both Offense and Defense

You really do diminish my warpath experience and I'm sure that of a number of other folks. The first step to redemption is recognition and any improvements you can make would be appreciated.

Re: Darrel Young - Rising Star?

Darrel Young has quietly developed into a great FB.
I like it.
The other pleasant surprise for me is the run blocking of our new TE's. They are not adding anything to the passing game, but they do not have to. Logan Paulsen and Niles Paul do such a great job of shifting and blocking both in the run game and in pass protection, it confuses the opposing defenses. I don t think it is a coincidence that once Paulsen, Paul and Darrel Young got used playing together a few game after the injury to Fred Davis, the team improved.
I will go a step further to say the injury to Fred Davis was a blessing in disguise because the team found its identity (running team) by increasing the playing time of Paulsen, Paul and Young. While Fred Davis is a great pass catching TE, his run blocking was lacking in motivation.
Having played LB I know it makes for a long day when the offense you face has physical run blocking TE's. It takes you out of your game when you have to worry about a TE or FB that can knock you back. Say what you want about it being a pass happy QB driven league, when the playoffs starts and it gets cold and windy (bad weather), the teams that can play great defense and run the ball usually excel. The 49ers and Houston Texans went far in the playoffs last year with this despite Texans playing their 3rd string QB and 49ers playing Alex Smith.

Besides Kuhn for Green Bay, who are the other notable fullbacks in the NFC. I think Toby Gearhart has, largely, been a disappointment.

peterson is so talented, he could probably put up these kind of numbers w me as his fb.

It's funny. After last year ended I thought Young had no chance of sticking around. Now I'm starting to wonder if he could eventually turn into a pro bowl level fullback.
Darrell Young= Tom Rathman= future pro bowl fullback.

Young is good. The Redskins don't throw to the fullback much and they call his number much to run the football, but when they do, Young is a good a fullback as any in the NFL.

Hynoski for the Giants has played as well as DY. I don't the Kuhn is as good as either of the NFC East backs.

saden1 12-06-2012 03:40 PM

Re: Darrel Young - Rising Star?

The thing that's really impressive about Young is how quickly he gets to the second level and his ability to block DEs. In several plays last week he bitched a LB, fell down and then got up to give RG3 a check down passing lane to throw to.

no way. i think you guy talking about him and kuhn only even know their names because they catch a lot of passes int he flat. young is doing the dirty work and paving the way for an aewsome rushing attack. i dont exactly fear the packers running game and the giants seem to have more success out of a one back set anyway.

Re: Darrel Young - Rising Star?

Hynoski has been stout. There was a pre-game schtick on him, I think, and it was pretty impressive. But he was pretty much a non-factor on Sunday.

Think you missed what I said. I think the best two in the NFC are Hynoski ( nyg) and Young. I said Kuhn was not as good as either of these guys.
