Im generally scared to death any foreign player. The game is very different over there. Too me Vesely is a horrible pick at 6th, then again I really dont see a "safe" pick at 6th, everyone has a question mark. Our second pick in the first I would easily stand behind Chris Singleton outta FSU, defensive standout.
I'm glad I was wrong and that he fell to us. Singleton at 18 eases my Vesely pain... |

The Wizards will be able to appreciate Singletons's defensive abilities. Scouting Report: Singleton is considered one of the best defenders in the draft, but a late-season injury might cause him to fall to the end of the first round or possibly even into the second. Singleton, who has good speed for his size, averaged team highs of 13.1 points, 6.8 rebounds and 2.0 steals as a junior for Florida State in 2010-11, and was an all-ACC third-team selection. He ended his career as the only player in school history to rank in the top 10 in steals (eighth with 180) and blocked shots (fourth with 136). Singleton was the ACC defensive player of the year in 2009-10 as a sophomore and just missed repeating this past season, but a broken right foot caused him to miss the final five games of the regular season. He returned for the NCAA tournament but wasn't much of a factor, averaging 7.0 points, 4.3 rebounds and 33.3 percent shooting in 19.0 minutes as the Seminoles advanced to the regional semifinals. Singleton is a solid shooter when his feet are set, but he has a hard time scoring off the dribble, and the foot injury will raise additional questions about his offensive effectiveness. Although he may not develop into much of a scoring threat in the NBA, Singleton could succeed in the pros on the strength of his defensive instincts and ability. |

Don't know a lot about Shelvin Mack but he went to Butler so based on that I feel good about the pick.
PLAYER EVALUATION Projection Los Angeles Lakers (No. 41 Pick) Positives Shooter with deep range NBA body Deceptive quickness Strong leadership qualities Solid ball handler and passer Strong guard Negatives Is he a point guard or a two guard? Re: Washington Wizards 2011-2012 Ongoing Thread
I'm intrigued by the Mack pick... It would be great if he turned out to be a Kyle Lowry-type perimeter defender.
I'll just have to warm up to Vesely some time... Wall's got athletes that can run with him now. With Singleton on board, we're building a defensive presence too. |
Re: Washington Wizards 2011-2012 Ongoing Thread
One more year of sucking should yield us one more high lottery pick and complete the team.

Defenses' will have their hands full protecting the rim. I agree....Singleton and Mack both excellent defensive players. Providing the fanbase continue to exhibit patience, I envision the Wizards being more than just an afterthought in a few years. I admire the way they're going about their business after the break-up. |
Re: Washington Wizards 2011-2012 Ongoing Thread
Great picks. Vesely....GREAT pick. I was hoping they'd pick Mack when I saw he was still there. Singleton should be a solid player too. Not a star, but solid.
Nice draft. Building a bright future after the housecleaning. |
Re: Washington Wizards 2011-2012 Ongoing Thread
Also, Derrick Williams > Kyrie Irving.
The Cavs blew it. Irving is unproven (11 games in college?) and possibly NOT a team player. When he came back, he played well...and his team lost, looking horrible. Irving is talented, but not #1-pick talented. Derrick Williams is a better player in my opinion. I may have even taken Brandon Knight over Irving. I just think there's too much risk with that kid. |
Re: Washington Wizards 2011-2012 Ongoing Thread
A lot of the pundits really liked the Wizards draft this year. I don't think I've seen them with anything lower then an A-.
WASHINGTON WIZARDS GRADE: A Round 1: Jan Vesely (6), Chris Singleton (18, obtained from Atlanta) Round 2: Shelvin Mack (34) Analysis: This was a critical summer for the Wizards. Drafting John Wall was easy last year. This year, the challenge was to surround him with players who complement his talents. Mission accomplished. Vesely is one of the most athletic forwards in the draft and should be great flying up and down the floor with Wall. Singleton is also a terrific athlete and the best defender in the draft. Factor in Shelvin Mack as a solid backup guard at No. 34, and the Wizards came away more athletic and tougher. That's a great draft. |

I did like the Tristan Thompson pick, however. Cavs fans will need to be even more patient with us, however... Irving and Thompson are going to take a few seasons to develop. |

Oh goodie. Wouldn't want the Lakers to have to deal with anything less then two superstars. That would be bad for the league, you know if someone else besides the Lakers won the title. Then again how funny would it be to see the Lakers beat the Heat in the Finals with Brown as the coach? Yeah, but im 99% sure the Lakers are gonna make a big deal at some point, that performance in the playoffs was absolutely horrible. Something going down after that. Interesting how bad's Pau play was for a playoff series put his status as tradable. Very interesting and a bit knee jerk. But IMO Bynum and Odom is a viable package to bring in a pretty good player. I fully expect to see a great PG or C in a Lakers uniform whenever next season begins. |
Re: Washington Wizards 2011-2012 Ongoing Thread
I long for an NBA where the Knicks, Lakers, Celtics, and Heat all suck. Chicago is fine since they're not really trying to buy championships but I still have my eye on them.
Still though, the sense of entitlement from these big market teams is disgusting. Maybe it's just me but you rarely see anything like that in the NHL and NFL. |

Seriously good read. Singleton and Mack are gonna be assets, and im loving the fact we are talking defense. Hamilton and Brad Stevens are pretty smart coaches, good perspective on coaching d. |

It can only be viewed as a good thing to hear the Wizards talking about defense. With the offensive players they have assembled, scoring should be no problem.....embracing the concept of defense for them has always been a hard sell. An aura of excitement is beginning to surround these new Wizards that is unmatched by any other time in their recent history. Personally I think its a good thing, and a situation where I doubt I'll be favoring the players anytime soon, unlike my back and fourth with the NFL situation. Pro's: - A much improved Wizards team would still get credit for their dismal record over the last few years and have a great chance of winning an aggregate lottery. The same type that netted the Pens Sidney Crosby after the NHL lockout. - John Walls legs get a year off. - If the owners win a hard cap or flex cap gets implemented. Either way the days of teams like Boston and LA trying to buy championships would be over. - Lebron can't win a championship for another year. Con's - Veasly misses out on a chance to learn the NBA game for a year. - We also loose a year in the development of guys like McGee, Crawford, and Wall. -A hard cap makes it difficult for teams to keep players they drafted. One of the great things about the current NBA system is that players can almost always stay in the city they're drafted. Unfortunately now it's being used by star players to cry their way out of small markets. - No basketball, but in referring to the pros section a year off might be necessary to overhaul a system that is very much anti-parity. I guess in the end the best realistic possibility would be a shortened season that got our guys experience while overhauling the anti-parity system that strongly favors teams like Boston and LA. |
