A sample of the genius of this booth:

Hahaha yeah I'm sure some of the espn980 guys can do a better job
I love listening to Sonny Sam and Larry. If my cable wasnt delayed i would watch the game and listen to them call the game, like you used to be able to.
There is an app for the iPAD (iRadio or something like that) that allows you to listen to Sonny and Sam and to slow down their broadcast to match it with HD cable. It works great until the first radio commercial. For some dumb reason everytime Sonny and Sam go to commercial they change their timing. Sometimes faster sometimes slower, but you have to resynch. If their crack technical team wouldn't do this we could easily "turn down the TV and watch the game and listen to Sonny and Sam". I still think they are better than many of the announcers we get on TV for the games. |
Re: Larry, Sonny, and Sam- the radio trio must go
Welcome to the board.
Thanks thats really good to know. Is it defintely iRadio? ive looked some stuff up and i cant find anything about slowing the radio down to match games. |
Re: Larry, Sonny, and Sam- the radio trio must go
Thiesman, Riggins, and Doc???

That is the Devil's Trifecta. Theisman won't shut up; Riggo will link every negative play to Danny Boy's dark heart and Doc will make sure that every Redskin is called a "baller" twice a game. I'd rather undergo abdominal surgery than listen to that trio... |

Re: Larry, Sonny, and Sam- the radio trio must go
I like Larry Michaels as a play caller. I think Doc could be a real good color guy. Honestly this combo doesnt sound too bad to me.
I think Riggo would be aweful. I cant stand Thiesman during the preseason and couldnt imagine what it would be like if you could only hear him and couldnt even watch the game. I dont know anything about Tim Brant. Do most radio stations use 2 or 3 guys? |
Re: Larry, Sonny, and Sam- the radio trio must go
This is like playing Fight, Fire, or get FD up with!!! lol, Il pick three people and we'll all take a gander at which one we;d do those three things with...lol Ready go,

Re: Larry, Sonny, and Sam- the radio trio must go
I watched the 1st half of the 1pm games today on NFL RedZone (I mean seriously, has there ever been a better channel?). The Skins game was so annoying, so I went to the gym at halftime.
So during my workout I listened to the Redskins radio broadcast with the espn radio app on my phone. I've been mentioning it here and there on this board for a while, but today sent me over the edge with these morons. There are so many epic fails surrounding the Redskins, and their broadcast team is one of them. As Skins fans, we're all used to discussing the possibility of heads rolling within the organization at this time of year. Larry, Sonny, and Sam are downright pathetic. Larry Michael as a play-by-play guy is flat and not descriptive at all. He does such a poor job verbally painting the on-field picture for the listeners. There is no insight whatsoever provided by Sonny and Sam. They don't offer anything of value to a game broadcast. Me and a few of my buddies could without question deliver a better broadcast each week. Sam in particular just sounds like a slurring, drunk old man. I mean today he called a safety blitz a corner blitz and said "whatever" when Sonny corrected him, he doesn't know the rules, he doesn't know the players' names (he refers to Kemoeatu as "koo-ooo"), and when Kellen Winslow caught a TD, Huff said "boy, he's been around a long time, hasn't he?" To which Larry Michael replied, "that's his son." I laughed out loud at least a half a dozen times during the second half. It's embarrassing to have such a pathetic trio broadcasting such a pathetic on-field product. Sonny and Sam were great Redskins to be sure, but they are getting by on that and nothing else right now. Do you agree that this gaggle of idiots should be replaced? And if so, who would you pick to replace them?
LOL. I've never listened to them but I want him to stay around forever. The comic relief seems hilarious. I wonder if his diaper was wet when he said that? |
Its the worst. I was on a road trip and we decided to radio stream the game. Everyone thought the crew were a joke.

Or "an absolute baller." |
Re: Larry, Sonny, and Sam- the radio trio must go
The iPAD app that lets you listen to Sonny and Sam and adjust the TV to match the sound is called "tunedin radio. Their broadcast is far ahead of cable TV or HD TV, but you can pause the app to synchronize the sound. Only problem is that the dumb techies at their radio station change their delay every time they have commercial breaks on the radio so they can get their commercials in. And that means you have to resynch the radio every time they come back from commercial. After a while it's just not worth the effort.

Re: Larry, Sonny, and Sam- the radio trio must go
I used to think Charles Mann would be a great addition to the radio team (in Sam's place). He was the commencement speaker at my sister's high school graduation and he came off as very smart and personable and I thought he would be able to provide intelligent insight into the game.
And then he announced one of preseason games. It was horrendous! Granted, maybe he would just need more practice, but it sounded like the commentary from a mid-90's Madden cartridge. He was stiff and boring and to me just got annoying after a little while. Oh well, hopefully they're trying to groom someone for the future. |

Radio might be ok for him. TV he struggles mightily when the camera turns on. I actually Trevor Matich could be a solid color commentator |

Re: Larry, Sonny, and Sam- the radio trio must go
co worker said yesterday while driving around shopping with his daughter in fredericksburg he had the game on and said the guys were talking about Eli. He said either Sonny or Sam said "Eli has turned out all right, I know the Giants were glad they took him over Ryan Leaf"....
My coworker just laughed and said "noooooo thats Peyton Manning"...he said they are horrible, he had never listened before. |
Re: Larry, Sonny, and Sam- the radio trio must go
Trevor Matich is the best ! he would be a great addition to the Booth!

Anyone is better at this point.

Re: Larry, Sonny, and Sam- the radio trio must go
I am surprised at all the Sonny and Sam hate in this thread.
I haven't listened to them since Larry Michael forced Frank Herzog out of the booth, but I always enjoyed the trio when Frank was the play by play guy. I grew up on them, and listened every week. I think they related to the listeners very well. Just seemed like regular dudes. I listen to some of the pregame show, and Sonny still seems capable. Sam seems a bit out of it, but I guess I see him as a loveable grandpa type and I can't bring myself to be too critical of him. Larry Michael is the reason I no longer listen to them. He's a slimeball. I can guarantee that I would not ever tune in to the pregame show if either Theismann or Matich joined the show. Theismann talks way too much, and Matich comes across as an arrogant jerk. I watch the CSN postgame show with Chick, BMitch, and Matich. Chick and BMitch make up for Matich, but not by much. I turn off ESPN whenever Matich comes on the air. I just can't stomach him. |

I agree that the show is somewhat laughable - that being said, at this point, these guys are like family.

I agree, if anyone goes it should be Sam. Sonny is still good but Sam has lost whatever pitches he had left. I listened to the Giants game on the radio and he kept getting the Giants and Redskins mixed up. You could hear Sonny covering for him, it started to get sad in a way. Doc Walker wouldn't be bad up there. |
