I thought we played well after the England goal, and I'm not too proud to accept some luck on Dempsey's goal. Particularly satisfied with Gooch's performance given his lack of playing time since his injury.
I don't think England is done, they just showed that they won't be able to win it all with their current goalkeeper. Their defense was pretty solid and only gave up a few chances. They're still a great team. I agree that Germany looked ridiculously good.
Sadly, if we finish second in our group, we likely will play those doggone Germans in the round of 16. On another front, go Japan! |
Man, the US should have won with how many quality shots they had on goal and I was happy to see them try to go for the win. Ingland is done IMO...no defense no goalie no WC Championship.
Germany looked amazing...technically sound and beautiful football.
There was such an obvious difference in class between the Germans and the Australians... They should've instituted a mercy rule in that match. Germany looks like the best of those that've played so far. BTW- anybody else love that Dodge Challenger commercial? A bit on the "wtf" side, but great in its own way. |
Re: The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Thread
Just to clear up this.
You have to have 2 people between you and the goal. The keeper came out for the cross so there was only the defender on the line between the scorer and the goal. Correctly given offside.
I didn't know about the rule...it's impressive the refs caught that. |
Re: The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Thread
I don't think England's done. Not sure why Capello picked Green over James, as James is much more seasoned and a better keeper. I wonder if it was arrogance on England's part. They have too much talent to be done, but stranger things have happened (See France 2002).
Was surprised to see Ghana win without Essien, but they looked solid. Can't wait for tomorrow's Portugal/Cote d'Ivorie matchup. Even if Drogba can't go, they are still solid and I hope that put that greasy mullet in his place. |

They have to get bigger to play with the big boys...I don't think they have it in them but time will tell. Should be interesting to see Ivory Coast vs. Protugal. I like both teams but without Drogba I don't know where they're going to get the goals from. |

Without Rio Ferdinand anchoring the back, they looked a bit lost. Glen Johnson played very well, but the rest of the defense was lacking. It'll be up to Terry and Cole to step it up. A lot of pressure will be put upon Cote d'Ivoire's Salomon Kalou if Drogba can't go. But you're right, they will be hard pressed to score if Drogba doesn't play. |

I certainly don't disagree, and I'm not an England fan. However, to write them off is a bit premature. Les Bleus looked like utter crap against Uruguay. I don't want to see another lapse like in 2002. Can't wait for Laurent Blanc to take over the squad, should have done it after Euro 2008... |
Re: The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Thread
OK, they need to watch tapes after games and hand out yellow cards that carry-on to the next game. All this faking injury shit is pissing me off... Ronaldo is one big bitch.

Re: The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Thread
I have real tried to watch this but is just not my cup of tea. It is like watching hockey on slow motion. When the have the ball at mid-field and are just kicking it around I want to pull my hair out from the boredom.

Re: The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Thread
Very impressed with N.K. against Brazil...I just hope those players don't lose their lives due to a glitch in Lead Kim's telapathic communication device.

Re: The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Thread
I was at my company's Corporate office today, so I didn't get a chance to watch any of the 3 matches today (did have match trackers up, and did catch highlights of the New Zealand/Slovakia match on ESPN not too long ago), but I heard the Ivory Coast/Portugal match was absolutely horrendous. Was impressed with Slovakia putting pressure on the Kiwis all match long, and was really impressed with the way Vladimir Weiss moved the ball.
My boss did pull up the Brazil/North Korea match on ESPN3 before I left this afternoon and we saw Maicon's brilliant goal. That was a sick kick. But it seems that North Korea wasn't the pushover Brazil or the rest of the world thought they'd be. |

I understand the feeling. But my friends in soccer-mad countries say the same about our American football: "Where's the action? All they do is stand around in huddles!" |

I rather watch a 40 second huddle then 15 minutes of kicking a ball around mid field but to each is own. |
Re: The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Thread
I heard on the radio this morning that there was 1 shot in the Nigeria game. Not one goal, ONE SHOT ON GOAL the whole game!
Soccer is more pathetic than I thought. Apparently, this is not the only time this has happened this tournament AND there are a lot of games where there were 2 total shots on goal by a team. I've noticed almost every score is 1-0 or worse yet...1-1. |

Huge upset with the Swiss beating Spain. 64% possession, 24 shots (8 on goal), zero goals, and a bunch of ticked off Spaniards.

Spain has always been overrated and overhyped and they continue to choke in the WC. Don't know why everyone always jumps on their bandwagon. I don't know if them losing to the Swiss was good or bad for my team (Chile) but as long we win, none of that should matter. The matchup next week vs the Swiss is HUGE! |

It was one of the greatest experiences of my life. The P definitely doesn't stand for Pinochet, lol. It stands for Pablo. My first name. I agree. They did look really good today. The game could've easily been 3-0. But I'm satisfied with the win and 3 pts. |

I used to live in Argentina and have a ton of Chilean friends. Never met a Chilean I didn't get along with. Great people. Sorry about the Pinochet jab. Uncalled for. Chile's win and Spain's loss made the next few games in that group much more exciting. |
Re: The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Thread
This 2nd goal by Slovenia is killing us, USA needs to step it up and at least tie
|

Re: The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Thread
I'm not usually one to blame the officiating. But this referee is terrible, made some horrible calls
|
Re: The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Thread
An absolutely terrible call to nullify that goal!!
|
Re: The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Thread
This ref should be tarred and feathered. Just terrible. Repeatedly terrible throughout the entire match.

The US looked absolutely horrible in the 1st half, then for whatever reason, turned it on and decimated the Slovenian defense in the 2nd half. If it weren't for lousy refereeing, the US would be atop the Group right now. Edu has earned his way into the starting XI I think. I'm glad Bradley stepped up and played brilliantly, including a dynamite goal. I caught the last 15-20 mins of the Germany/Serbia match. Germany looked nothing like they did against Australia. Losing Klose against Ghana could be hurtful to Germany. |
Re: The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Thread
I'm fuming! So angry at that asshole ref. Arrrrrgggghh. The more I watch the replay of that Edu goal- not only was no one offsides, but you could have awarded THREE penalty kick for the holds on Bradley, Altidore, and Bocanegra. WTF was he thinking?
Plus we lose Findley for the next match because this idiot gave him a yellow card for getting hit in the face with the ball. ????? I haven't been this angry at officiating in any sport since the refs gift wrapped a game for Florida State in the Swamp in 2003. |
Re: The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Thread
so proud of the guys in the 2nd half. they showed HEART. cant believe how shit the ref was the entire game. edu's goal was great.
GM, i agree the findley yellow card was absurd, but he is NOT a good player and we will do ok without him. buddle, gomez, and dempsey are all better at striker than findley imo. bradley likes his speed but his touch and field awareness are very poor. |

I'd much prefer Buddle or Edu. I think Findley's speed is better suited coming off the bench after the 60th minute in a game. I wouldn't be surprised if Edu starts in his place for the next match. |

for me, id like to see this.
-------------------altidore------------------buddle----------------- --dempsey---------edu---------------------bradley-------donovan-- --boca-------------demerit-----------------gooch-------cherundolo-- --------------------------------howard------------------------------ buddle is a quality finisher, we need that in this team right now. he and donovan are club mates at la galaxy, so them on the right of attack is nice. throw dempsey up top for feilhaber again maybe after the half and take buddle off then if he is struggling. stay with gooch at cb, its hard for me to say that because he was so shitty today, but on his day he is great. goodson is shaky, he is the backup cb. |

heres the video of the robbed goal. heres my explanation for it being totaly ridiculous no one knows what the call was. either way, edu was miles onside, and bradley was being tackled into being a hair offside. when offsides is called, thats an indirect kick. the ref is seen walking away, no arm raised. when its indirect, the arm needs to be raised until the ball is touched. his arm is not raised, so we have no clue what was called. landon donovan said this afterwards to espn
"I'm proud of our guys," he said. "I don't think there's many teams that would respond that way after going 2-0 down [but] I'm a little gutted, to be honest. I don't know how they stole that third goal from us. I'm not sure what the call was. I don't know." On referee Koman Coulibaly, he added: "It was the guy's first World Cup game, so maybe he got a little caught up in the moment, but you can't take a perfectly good goal from a team, especially at a World Cup. "When we asked him several times, in a non-confrontational manner, why he made that call, he just ignored us. Maybe he didn't understand us since I don't know how much English he speaks."
|
Re: The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Thread
Wow. Thanks for posting the better angles Big C. I didn't see anything watching it live and my confusion is only confirmed by watching those clips.
If we get out of the group, the indignation will be quenched, but right now that call is a tough one to swallow. I'm pleased that we improved throughout the game and I'm hopeful we can put away Algeria, althought hey are looking pretty good against England in the first half. |
Re: The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Thread
if we beat algeria by 2 goals or more, no other results matter. certainly algeria getting a result would be nice against england, but we dont need them to to have a chance to advance. we control our own destiny, like i said, with a 2 goal victory against algeria.
