Re: Vick signs with the Eagles
I went to school in Philly, and when Vick was re-instated, all my friends up there dismissively said that Snyder would sign him within a week and that it would be the circus-like distraction typical for our organization. Now that he has signed with the Iggles, those same guys are calling it a stroke of genius. Typical Philly fans.
Still scratching my head over this move. Doesn't really make a ton of sense for the Eagles.
I think that it does. I do not believe that they were happy with Kolb even before the injury. They still need a replacement down the line for McNabb. McNabb was a scrambling QB for a while before Reid turned him into a Pocket Passer. I believe that they feel that they might be able to do the same thing with Vick. Remember Vick has been in the WCO. They sign him short term for relatively cheap and it buys them more time to get the QB solution after McNabb solved. In the mean time they can use him for those gimmick plays that they liked to run with Jackson last season. I do believe that this might hurt them a little if McNabb goes down early in the season. Their backup QB position until week six is a big question mark and nobody knows what Vick would look like after week six. In short, this is a great move for the not so distant future, (next season and perhaps beyond) short term impact could be negative. |

On another note, time to lock all of the other Vick threads...and if you're feeling evil, throw them in thread hell.
Andy Reid better keep him on a short leash...
I'm sure he will, but Vick owns quite a number of high quality short leashs that Reid can choose from. |
Re: Vick signs with the Eagles
Monday Night Football Eagles at Redskins Week 7...Vick's Return!!! (actually I think he'll be back before then)
I think this move is almost a bit of an admission by the Eagles that their defense this year won't be quite what it's been in past years and they will need to heavily rely on offensive firepower |

In DC (well, close enough). That might be the only game where peta folks are redskins fans! I can imagine the noise when he takes the field, probably just what we need. I don't look at this as having anything to do w/their D slipping a little. I look at this in 2 ways: 1) they may be legitimately grooming him as a backup to DM, who is older & is at least a little injury prone. 2) They are undergoing the second coming of the TO experiment; i.e. they believe they are "1 player away" & are willing to deal w/the distraction. |
Re: Vick signs with the Eagles
Way to keep it classy Philly Daily News! It's going to be interesting to see how Reid uses Vick and McNabb in their offense.

Re: Vick signs with the Eagles
I don't agree with the Vick-as-McNabb's successor arguments. Vick is 29. His age makes him a poor choice as a successor.
I also am appalled by the many "McNabb won't like the move / McNabb is now under pressure" articles which have already appeared. McNabb lobbied for the signing. End of story. |
Re: Vick signs with the Eagles
I don't think McNabb has anything to worry about.
Most seem to think the Eagles picked up Vick with the idea of trading him for a pick next year in mind. That said the media is going to jump on a potential QB controversy story every chance they get. And if McNabb struggles at any point this year, you can bet the retard Philly fans will start clamoring for Vick. |
Re: Vick signs with the Eagles
Funny how the Bengals made Vick an offer first

Re: Vick signs with the Eagles
Its was funny our local station brook this story around 7:15 and then they started bragging how they beat out ESPN and all the other national stations. I'm guessing they had a local conection.

ROFL, thats exactly what I was thinking....2 minus 1=huh? I just have a bad feeling that we are gonna see some trickery with Vick & McNabb on the field at the same time. |

Exactly what I was thinking. I can still remember Philly fans hyping TO back in the day, and how quickly they turned on him. I could see the same thing happening here. |
Re: Vick signs with the Eagles
Jeffrey Lurie had a funny quote about his meeting with Vick:
"I had to see a lot of self-hatred from him." LOL! Self-hatred. That's funny. I mean, did Vick have to walk into his office and say, "hey, I'm an unbelievable piece of sh*t and I can't stand myself. Let's play some football!" |

If you're listening to the WJFK the fan. They're talking about Vick right now and I just called in said that Vick won't be the same player because he'll have lost his speed.
Lavar thought that was ridiculous and starting going off about it...LOL...I thought it was funny. Anyway, if you heard it, that was me who called in from Manasssas : ) |
I am not afraid to go out on a limb here.
This is horrible for anyone who is not an Eagles fan. I applaud the Eagles for ignoring the backlash. I think it is foolish to think that Andy Reid will not find ways for this man to make huge plays for them. He brings a skillset possesed by no others.... Congrats to the Eagles for thinking about football first instead of marketing.
I think you will find many sports media outlets praising the Eagles in a similar manner. Honestly, I feel it's a gamble no matter who would have taken him. I couldn't help it, but I think if the Redskins had picked up Vick, many people would have thought the following... "The Redskins are naive for ignoring how much of a distraction Vick will bring. It is foolish for the team to think that he still has the same skills he had before and that he will make a difference. Snyder has once again brought a big name to sell more jerseys instead of thinking about football first." |
Re: Vick signs with the Eagles
I am soooo thankful it's the Eagles and not us. Thank you for holding off Mr. Snyder!
First you got Orakpo over Sanchez, then you steered clear of Vick...BRAVO! |

Re: Vick signs with the Eagles
The fact that he isn't going to be the starting quarterback means he won't be much of a threat at all. Teams were afraid of him because he could run at any time and since he is so talented and quick, he could break for huge runs.
But now when he comes in off the sideline for Philly, everyone on the defense and their brother are gonna know what kind of play is gonna be run. Its stupid. I'm not worried about it all. |
Re: Vick signs with the Eagles
And for any Philly fans who think he will be the second coming of Randall Cunningham, there is zero chance

Re: Vick signs with the Eagles
We should have... When Segal was at the Redskins practice the other day, we knew he had to be there because it was close to Baltimore or Philly. Philly makes perfect sense. They run the WCO system with a mobile QB as a starter and their backup QB just got injured. They have a no-nonsense coach and Front Office. Its a perfect situation for Vick. The only good news for us is he'll either suck horribly or play his way into a starting position somewhere else. Either way, he'll only play for them one year.
BHA, I'm going to point out that you're on record describing Campbell and the WCO as a poor combination. Why on God's green earth would Vick be a better fit?
A west coast offense is only different from any other offense because of the empahsis on getting the ball out of the QB's hands quickly. This would be precisly how you get all the worst qualities out of Michael Vick. If you are going to play with Vick, you spread the defense horizontally and work from there. |
Re: Vick signs with the Eagles
The Vick conundrum: he's an amazing talent, but the offense that squeezes the most out of his potential doesn't currently exist. You'd have to learn, and spend months teaching an offense built around Vick to his supporting cast. However, Vick would be the only player who could run this offense, and he's not a very durable player. So when he gets hurt, all you have is a foreign offense and a backup who can't run it (See: Michigan. 2008).
Essentially, the opportunity cost of doing what it takes to make Michael Vick a great NFL player is not worth the risk of the ultimate failure of the plan once implemented. Ergo, Vick will never be a valuable NFL player. |

Also, while he won't even be available til week 6, unless McNabb goes down for good, Vick's option (the eagles option on him) is 5.2 mil next year. The odds that he stays with the Eagles are pretty slim. He was never a good QB to begin with, but an amazing scrambler. If he lost a step, he's not worth anything. |

Got to give the Iggles some credit for guts there. As for the second point, right on. He's 29 and if he didn't lose a step in prison, he will soon. And without that speed Vick has little to contribute. |
Re: Vick signs with the Eagles
There's a really good article about Vick and the Eagles on espn.com by Mosley. Couldn't post it but it asks the question, "Vick needs the Eagles, but why do they need him?". Mosley thinks they've made a mistake and Vick will become a bigger distraction than T.O. ever was.

Re: Vick signs with the Eagles
People want to say a lot of things about Vick. But what I heard from his pratice with the Eagles he is not looking that bad and knows the basic formations of the "WCO" which we run. Hmmm. So if Vick will be with the Eagles this year and maybe next year. He might end up being somone that will keep continuity if McNabb goes down and also a threat to run the ball (via wildcat formation). Either way. Its not good for us. Hmmm. How does our QB situation look? Not that good. Vick would change the dynamics of our offense and also would give us a better back up plan if JC didn't work out. Too bad now. Now we have to face him twice a year. Only once this year. The project could fail. But it could be a success and lead to us getting our ass whipped by the Eagles. Because we aren;t that good with mobile QBs and out LBs are looking suspect this year.

Not really. The fans will turn on him quick and severely WHEN he doesn't play up to his promises of "I can still run as fast and throw as far and I work out now, I never did before...". If he does perform well, the fans will begin their annual "throw McNabb outta town" campaign and distract the team. Philly is a huge dogfighting venue too, so he's going to be expected to do that much more "I'm sorry, don't dogfight, kids" campaigning. Then of course, there is the clash of the circus freaks: PETA vs. Philly fans. It's going to be a disaster for the team. I love it. Also...McNabb says he's playing WR and TE...just hilarious...Orakpo would be covering him at TE...say goodbye to their QB if this happens. :) |

I think that's reasonable. I would have like to see him in uniform week 1, but I'm sure Vick isn't crying about it. It's not like he's starting anyway.

Dude paid a huge price. Don't like him at all, but he did his time.

I thought after Pacman was going to be suspended for a few games after his indefinite suspension from Goodell but he didn't end up serving any.
Vick seems to be the exception...I guess dogs really are more important than humans. At least 2 games isn't that bad. |
