Re: First and goal on the one yard line, what would you do?
Shows what you know. Clearly, what this team is lacking is a statue of liberty, double reverse, hook 'n ladder, option pass from the one. Damn that conservative run the ball approach!
No one ever wins with a predictable playcall. You never go to your strength, always go for the surprise. <<He's going to go all the way, unless Blackwood can catch him...>> I would have done exactly what the Redskins did except with different players. Portis for Betts mainly. And the route that Sellers ran, I'd have run a route where he's already in the endzone when the ball is thrown. Not where he has to catch it and run in
Even after those plays failed you would still run them? And you would substitute a smaller back in Portis for Betts to run over people? and then you would run a slant off tackle with a stacked D-line waiting for it? Nice!!!!!! |
Re: First and goal on the one yard line, what would you do?
First thing that comes to mind with the sequence at the end for me was: preparation. I love Gibbs to death, just like all of you - but it was his responsibility to have this team prepared in situations like this.
To me, questioning the plays called and the players' execution at the end takes a backseat to Gibbs' responsiblity to prepare this team. For a veteran (not to mention hall-of-famer) coach, this should be a major strength, not a weakness. If Gibbs hasn't started to already, he needs to go over and prepare these situations in practice. This is what seperates great teams from lesser ones. |

Re: First and goal on the one yard line, what would you do?
The sky is falling, the sky is falling!!! We were 5-11 last year people! When did this sense of entitlement begin?? Sure we let one get away yesterday that we should have won, but we're 2-1!!!!!

I don't think that just because a play doesn't work once you never go back to it again. I also don't believe that Betts 2 pound advantage over Portis is worth sitting CP on the bench for. |
Re: First and goal on the one yard line, what would you do?
!st - Spike the Ball to stop the clock.
2nd - Run the ball with Betts 3rd- Fake Spike Hit Moss or Cooley 4th- Play Action to Sellers, Hit Cooley |
Re: First and goal on the one yard line, what would you do?
We shoulda brought in Lloyd as the sole WR (as everyone on earth knows he won't catch a TD), with the D thinking run all the way, lob it to him for the easy score.
By the way I am kidding. In reality, regardless of his earlier fumble CP shoulda been in there, 21 TDs in his last 22 games - the guys got a nose for the endzone. Also, does no-one fake spike anymore? Hows about running up to the line screaming "spike" and with the D not fully committed as they are assuming spike we get a yard or 2 seperation and "BAM" (in a Dan LeBatard style) there you have it. |

Of course the sky is not falling, but it was raining on a day that was forecasted to be sunny and beautiful for the redskins. It is a little disheartening and at the very least disappointing, that the redskins lost because of the way that the season was going- until the 2nd half of the giants game. On the positive side though, realistically the redskins can be a great team THIS season - if they understand and work on the problems that arose during the 2nd half of the giants game. |
Re: First and goal on the one yard line, what would you do?
Remember, clock is running, no timeouts, less than 1:15 to play...
1st down-Rollout right, try to get Cooley in the back of the end zone 2nd down-fake Sellers dive, flip to Portis sweep left 3rd down-spike 4th down-4 wide shotgun with Cooley as a WR, roll right, try to find Cooley along the back of the end zone or run for the pylon.. |
Re: First and goal on the one yard line, what would you do?
i would have thrown a pass on a rollout.somebody would have bound to have gotten open.or they could have thrown a pass to samuels on a lineman turned/tackle eligible play.

Offiss, funny how you haven't been around to praise Gibbs et al after the victories. Would you be happy with anything less than the return of Spurrier and Ramsey? |

It's even funnier how you selectively don't pay attention. And even funnier that you would anoint Gibbs after 2 games against teams that are not that good who were in position to tie, or beat us in the final 2 minutes, or in OT, this last game against the Giants is exactly why I didn't, or wont jump on that bandwagon until it actually arrives, I wanted to make sure a different Gibbs was in the house now that we have a real QB, but unfortunately it's the same old story we have been watching since his return, he treats the football like it was made of plutonium, we lost to the worst of the 3 teams we have played blowing a 14 point lead at home in the second half, what a complete an utter joke. But your more than welcome to pick up the old pom poms and perform a few routines for gibbs by all means.:woot: Make no mistake about it, the Giants didn't beat us, Gibbs rolled out the red carpet and handed that victory to them, his charity work never stops. |

JC, QB sneak over the left side on 1st down insted of spiking it, game tied.

Im not an NFL coach, I dont get paid Millions of dollars to make these decisions, and with Joe Gibbs calling those plays I would have said 9 times out of 10 we would make it in. We didnt, it happens, the Giants played great in the second half and we choked, but there is no reason to start a thread based on woulda, coudla, shoulda. Theres a reason Gibbs has a bust in the hall of fame, he knows what hes doing, sometimes it doesnt work, but how many teams have gone undefeated in the Superbowl era? Thats right, 1

Re: First and goal on the one yard line, what would you do?
From JLC,
"Anyway, we all know the Redskins have choked away their fair share of games since this staff took over in 2004. So I got to thinking how they stood up with other teams, and well, as in the overall W/L record the last 15 years or so, their company ain't pretty. According to Elias, since 2004 the Redskins have 11 losses when leading at the half, which puts them ... worst in the NFL. Oakland (11) and Houston (10) are the only other teams with double-digit loss totals when leading at the half since Gibbs came back to the NFL. Overall, Washington is a mediocre 15-11 in 26 games when leading at the half since 2004. The Redskins used to be the team that got a lead and battered opponents like no one else in the game; now it's the opposite. The rosters aren't nearly as good, the front office not nearly as sound, and say what you will of ownership, game-day coaching decisions, etc.as you consider what this stat means, and what it points to. Re: First and goal on the one yard line, what would you do?
The standard sequence when you are that close should be run pass run. Given the clock I would have gone pass run pass but, they nearly scored on first run and decided to take a chance. I don't know why everyone is so focused on the offense. The defense's inability to play pass defense is the only thing that causes me concern at this point. We will always give up big yards when we rush four and play zone. It looked like a repeat of last year in the second half.
Now, I will go back to my bye week. Everyone relax. |
Re: First and goal on the one yard line, what would you do?
QB keeper with the option to pass.

Re: First and goal on the one yard line, what would you do?
Big perspective on first and goal at the one,..... yes we are all sad that they did not get in, but to win the game, they would have not only needed to get in, but make the extra point and then score again in OT.
The OT situation was a fortunate situation against the Dolphins, but the Skins could have very easiy lost in OT to the Giants this past weekend. A TD last week was not for the win, but for a tie and a CHANCE in OT. Again, only a CHANCE. The Football Gods, (as TMQ would call them), decided that the Skins played too bad in the second half to deserve the win, so they saved us the sadness of losing in OT, and just gave it to us early! |
Re: First and goal on the one yard line, what would you do?
Roll out pass to cooley !!
|
Re: First and goal on the one yard line, what would you do?
Play fake to Betts, float Cooley in the corner. TD!
|
Re: First and goal on the one yard line, what would you do?
Goal line plays:
1ST DOWN: Spread the field w/ three wr's and just Sellers in backfield. Sellers crashes down on the right side and Campbell follows him in (because like others have said NY PREDICTED we would go left). 2ND DOWN: I-formation w/ Portis following Sellers to the left, but it's a fake and ARL sweeps from left to right going wide for a TD run. 3RD DOWN: Clock could be way down so it probably has to be a pass. Something play action to Betts w/ a corner shot to Cooley. 4TH DOWN: Honestly, I can't see it going this far. Get the ball to CP and let him sniff out the goal line. |
Re: First and goal on the one yard line, what would you do?
it's just one loss. stop acting like the season is over.

Re: First and goal on the one yard line, what would you do?
Actually, offiss has a stong case here. I always remind myself there is a lot to love about the Skins today, but the coaching/playcalling leaves a lot to be desired. I think you can even see how the offense finds it hard to get excited about the playbook.
|
Re: First and goal on the one yard line, what would you do?
Doc Walker gave a great analysis of the 3rd down play where Betts tried to cut to the inside instead of following Mike Sellers around the left end. Not a very good move instinctlvely when there's no daylight to be found inside. Follow Sellers, and he probably scores. Of course that's all moot if Campbell leads Sellers with the pass on 2nd down. Bottom line, no play will work with poor execution.
