i'm seriously going to kill somebody if we have to give up a 1st and 3rd pick

we could get almost any player in the league for a 1st and 3rd pick

Re: We traded for T.J. Duckett?

holy crap. not sure what to think about this. 2 draft picks?

this only makes sense if we trade away Betts right now. lets get a corner or lineman for him before the season starts. I was never personally attached to Betts - how you gonna be slower and bigger than Portis, but LESS tough??

would be funny if we traded Betts now, he's the Redskin Wallpaper player in Madden 07...don't ask me why
How does denver do this...got a first rounder in the champ - portis trade and now could get 2 of our picks for this trade...give me a break. should be 1 for 1 for 1 point blank period.
we gave a second rounder in that trade

Re: We traded for T.J. Duckett?

the espn.com article says there is a complicated formula for what draft picks they get, but at worst the would get our 3rd and 4th rounders...and i guess the 4th rounder is for the 2008 draft because we dont have one for '07

The only thing im worried about is that this was a desperation move because Portis is more hurt then they are tellin us.

He definately is a big 2 in a 1-2 punch. The lil fat guy got some speed.

This little nugget from the WP makes me wonder if Betts could be traded soon...
Several teams have expressed interest in Betts this summer, according to league sources, and while Coach Joe Gibbs has talked about re-signing him -- Betts is in the final year of his contract -- Washington could still end up dealing a running back as well, with the deadline for the final cutdown to the 53-man roster about two weeks away.
There is no way we would send a 1st and a 3rd to Denver even if Denver runs the table. If that is in the cards, The Danny is officially crazy. Yeah, the RB situation is a little shaky, but it was not THAT much of a need.

i'm actually hoping they just realized they want Portis around here a long time and need a tough guy 2nd runner to spread the work around. Betts was talented, but tough he was not.

Isn't that nice. Al Saunders now has a poor mans version of Priest Holmes and Larry Johnson.

Is there a possibility that Denver's Foxworth or Darrent Williams might be coming our way in a deal for Betts? Interesting..

I had wondered if Saunders talking Betts up earlier this summer was an effort to strengthen his trade value. I'd like to hold onto him personally

I like it a lot.

Keeper running backs: Portis, Betts, Duckett, Sellers, White Jr, and either Lumsden or Nemo with the other on practice squad.

Don’t think Rock is a keeper this year because of the numbers…We now have 3 runners that are better and a few others that may be better….and lordy they better not keep Rock over Sellers.

To me, it seems folks love Rock for his personality, so folks create reasons he's a keeper. My opinion is that we’ve seen Rock’s ability and know he isn’t good enough to start for the skins while we have a few young guys that may have the ability. Lumsden, Nemo, and While Jr. all MAY have the tools to become very good runners. The old standby, Special Teams, doesn’t make sense because the young linebackers we have that should fill in fine, and also appear to have starting potential.

Basically Rock is the 4th best runner on the team while the other runners may be better…so you keep the best 3 and the 3 with potential. And I get long winded…

Wouldnt he be able to share information about our offense with people? Maybe he's not doing as well as we thought in that. Or do you think Cartwright might be the guy to go?

No, I just know both of them are capable of being Denver's #2 CB and we are in the market for a young, talented CB.

Re: We traded for T.J. Duckett?

For the folks that are talking about how slow duckett is, well, you don’t have to look back to college to see proof he can roll…watch some of the tape from him last year when he broke free. He is only like bettis in the size and hitting areas, I don’t think bettis ever had this speed, even when with the rams early in his career.

So…What happens now?
Do we trade betts and use a lightning/portis and thunder/duckett combo or do we keep betts as insurance that if portis is hurt long term we aren’t down to 1 proven runner in duckett, a decent one in Rock, and a few unproven/potential young guys?

Betts definitely has some trade value... the Jets were interested just recently for example.

For those who say Ducket is slow

CNNSI.com - T.J. Duckett - -

TJ. Duckett | HB | Michigan St. | Big Ten Conference
Selected by Atlanta Falcons in round 1, pick 18 (18 overall)
Height Weight 40 Grade

Darren Silva/Getty Images

Big-bodied runner that started his career as a middle linebacker but quickly became the team's feature back as a true freshman and has been productive the past three seasons. Rushed for 236/1,236/5.2/10 as a junior, also catching 12/80/6.7/1. Totaled 240/1,353/5.6/7 on the ground as a sophomore and caught 8/39/4.9, though he missed time due to assorted groin, shoulder and ankle injuries. Did not start a single game as a true freshman but rushed for 118/606/5.1/10. Totaled seven games last year in which he rushed for more than 100 yards and has topped the 200-yard mark on three different occasions during his career.
Powerful back that is more than just a road-grader. Sees the field, finds the open spot in the defense, displaying good footwork and the ability to side-step opponents. Quick through the hole, has a burst in the open field and puts his shoulders down when tackled. Patient, will pick and choose his spots and follows his blocks. Rarely brought down by the first opponent or a single defender and picks up a lot of yardage off initial contact. Does not lumber or plod as you'd imagine a big back would and shows the ability to squeeze through small openings. Good receiver out of the backfield and a reliable target in the short field. Does not always seem to run with a physical style or really look like he is playing to his size. Needs to condition himself and attack the game but should easily be able to take the pounding of an every down back at the next level. Mid First Round.

Re: We traded for T.J. Duckett?

Why is everyone so high on betts? What has he ever done other than a few good runs here and there. He gets injured yearly, and coaches praise him so much it reminds me of a certain reciever... 4 years in and hasn't broken 400 yds in a season. Same draft, Duck by the numbers seems better to me...and lord knows when it comes to playing style I'd rather have a battering ram, that duckett is faster in the open field seals the deal for me.

***EDIT***
Tried to post their stats down here but it was all screwy looking.
Numbers: Duckett has been in 7 more games, has 231 more carries, 904 more yards, .1 less yards a carry 3.9/4.0, 26 more TDs 31/5.

Basically, i disagree with folks that are saying duckett isn't good, that he hasn't done anything, and that he will be our 3rd string back.

SmootSmack 08-23-2006 12:16 AM

Re: We traded for T.J. Duckett?

How is he as a blocker? Because we know Sellers can block for Portis, can you put Duckett and Portis back there and can TJ block for Clinton?

illdefined 08-23-2006 12:25 AM

Re: We traded for T.J. Duckett?

it's definitely getting complicated back there. Sellers's role was getting expanded, as a blocker, receiver, and now as a runner.

where does Sellers fit in all this? T.J. does all the above except block, and he never had a fullback to block for HIM, so this is all a pretty big organizational shakeup. who does what?

Betts is definitely superfluos at this point. expect him to go. Rock stays because he's a special teams perennial. Betts doesnt want that role, bye Betts.

Re: We traded for T.J. Duckett?

I like this trade...why? We get a bruiser who can score TDs with his brute force. Remember how many times we were stuffed last year or couldn't punch it in? At worst "TJ Not Taylor Jacobs" should provide for adequate decoy in the redzone. Like others said, I don't trust Betts, Rock or who ever else ends up on the roster. Betts gets hurt and has always missed games and the rest disappear when the pressure is on.

The Redskins are in it to win it all and this move is a VERY good insurance policy. Way to go Gibbs and company!

offiss 08-23-2006 12:35 AM

Re: We traded for T.J. Duckett?

I like the trade even though I hate giving up draft picks, but we are nothing remotly special when it comes to the draft, Betts I doubt is going anywhere this year, but I do believe they realized that Rock, Nemo, White, are all below average runners, Betts can be a #1 but he can't be relied upon because of his injuries, Duckett will punish defenders with his size, and be a nice compliment to Portis.

I can't help rehashing my feelings on the Portis deal from the get go, How good would Stephen Jackson look in this offense? Or any Gibbs offense for that matter? He was really perfect for us and we could have had him for a late 1st rounder , and just traded Bailey for draft picks, then we could have gone after a complimentary speed back and saved a heck of a lot of cap room.

I do like Portis and wanted us to draft him out of college, but denver grabbed him a few picks ahead of us, I just didn't like giving up as much as we did to get him. I do think we are on the right track with our new running game to allow him to use his greatest strength and thats his ability to cut and outrun people, the smash mouth running game Gibbs has alway's employed was not for him regardless of how many yards he accumulated, he was going to retire a young man if we kept that up, Duckett should really help even when Portis is healthy again, we haven't had a real power back since Gibbs return, we do now.

Forget that I would put Sellars and Duckett in the backfield at the same time inside the red zone, as well as short yardage, try stopping that freight train!

Lets see if we can get Peyton Manning.

Kevikazi 08-23-2006 12:40 AM

Re: We traded for T.J. Duckett?

With Portis' shoulder injury and knowing our RB's have to take some heavy pounding, I'm sure the organization doesn't want to hurry him back and re-injure himself. I'm thinking towards mid-season he should be 100%. With possibility of Portis gone that long, trade for Duckett is a good move IMO (although we gave up too much as usual). Duckett and Betts sounds lot better than Betts and Cartwright.

MightyJoeGibbs 08-23-2006 12:41 AM

Re: We traded for T.J. Duckett?

So with Betts/Duckett both in the last year of their contract unless they are going to move forward with extending TJ now it seems that the one who stays will have to show they want it more.

SmootSmack 08-23-2006 12:41 AM

I guess Duckett will be used similar to how Saunders used Tony Richardson in KC

Hey easy there. You have to respect a 7th round fullback that lasted this long on the team that drafted him. Anyway looks like hes going to the Bengals when he gets released.

Re: We traded for T.J. Duckett?

Should we read more into Portis' injury with this move? Did Gibbs hear my plead that Betts will hold us back if he bought into his hype?? Or are we this crazy to steal all the talent from the league? Is this a conspiracy to hold back Lumsden?? How upset are teams like the Jets and colts who probably need him more???? Is this a sign of the apocalypse that the world is coming to an end with the best Skins team ever assembled???? Will Atlanta spoil their division now??????

At least with Portis he cant take his sweet ass time till he is ready to return and even when he does he will get what he wanted and kickass till the 3rd qtr then put on his hat and relax the rest.

Damn its good to be a skins fan these days. Good for Atlanta too who get Lelie all they need to run is Dunn/Vick anyhow.
