My point is you need to be prepared for some really messed up contingencies. Look at Minnesota last year. Jackson sucked, they throw in Frerotte, he gets hurt, etc. Teams getting stuck going to #3 QBs isn't all that rare.
I see Minnesota had 4 people throw the ball last year, Jackson, Butthead, Sidney Rice and Chester Taylor. So who was the third? Actually it is incredibly rare. Have the Redskins used a 3rd QB since the bodybag game? When did they use one before that? |

Yes, Minny's 1st QB sucked, then they put their 2nd QB, then the 2nd QB got hurt, and plugged in the 1st QB again. Where's the 3rd stringer here?
What do you mean? Collins got us into the playoffs last as a backup. Brady got his big start as a backup winning the SB. I rather have a real QB than one that was converted into a WR(ARE). I think Colt or Chase could have won some games starting.
The key word here is back ups, but you were talking about going with a 3rd stringer... Re: Let's Talk QB Height (w/ Daniel going to N.O.)
People are obsessed with statistics in football. That's why so much is put into a 40 yard dash for runningbacks, cornerbacks, and wide receivers. For quarterbacks, it's arm strength and height.

Short and good is better than tall and bad.
Tall and good is better than short and good. |
Re: Let's Talk QB Height (w/ Daniel going to N.O.)
Back to the discussion of height:
In terms of actually throwing, I think it is a non-issue. Most qb's have to throw through open lanes. Even if the qb is taller the Dlinemen know to get their hands up to knock it down. In terms of seeing the whole field, I think this is where the issue is created. If you are 6'0 and the average OL/DL is 6'2 -6'4, then when you are back trying to read your progressions, you may not see a LB who sits down on a lane because of your view is obstructed. That is why you would have more designed rollouts, or leave the pocket faster, so you can see. KI sums up the net effect real well. I also imagine, but don't know this, that in college, the OL/DL height also would have a lower average height. I mean out of all the positions, I think OL/DL really skims only the cream of the crop. I doubt there are any NFL OL/DL that are under 6'2". I did not look at any references so I easily could be wrong. |
Re: Let's Talk QB Height (w/ Daniel going to N.O.)
I'll say this, Chase's 5'9" height has gotten him this far. He's done well so far. I honestly don't think the height is an issue. It is nice to have a QB who can see over the O-line but when arms are flying and helmets moving I think all look for a lane to see and throw into.
but, I don't think is height was in issue for Zorn. I think they thought they could cut him and stick him on the practice squad cause they wanted another RB or OL or someother position. Someother team snatched him up, which is a pisser, and now we are looking for another PS QB. I also think it's nice to have the height but when JC gets under center you can see the issue's. He has to squat weird to get the hand off and only getting a tall center could cure that issue. So I say. LOL. JK> |
Re: Let's Talk QB Height (w/ Daniel going to N.O.)
I don't think height is what got Chase cut. I think he's got some potential, but obviously Zorn felt he wanted to go in a different direction. Dude is short though LOL

Re: Let's Talk QB Height (w/ Daniel going to N.O.)
Maybe sometime in the distant future we will get the opportunity to see Chase again in real game like situations. The brief time we got to see him I thought he showed promise, but in all honesty, coming in in the kind of situations he did during the preseason is a far cry from a real game, the circumstances are so much different.
I'm sre we all wish him the best, and because he was here first will follow his career closely, if he has one. |

Chase gets called up for Saints.

If the Skins really want him to our practice squad...it will give the Skins the opportunity to up the ante on a practice squad offer if/when he is temporarily cut. This could make up for the only 2 potential practice squad mistake the Skins made....alridge/dorsey, Daniel not making it |

He can at least throw a good fade route. That can be our contribution to the NFL like Miami's Wildcat offense. The Redzone QB. The depth chart would look something like this: QB: Jason Campbell Todd Collins Chase Daniel RQB: Chase Daniel Todd Collins Illegally play Colt Brennen A reluctant Jim Zorn Jason Campbell |
Re: Let's Talk QB Height (w/ Daniel going to N.O.)
The chances of Daniel sticking in the Saints roster are pretty good, they only have 2 QB's, Brees, Brunnell and now Daniel. Brunnell is ancient and by next year he'll be gone, this is where Daniel steps right in as the backup. So my guess is this is probably were he will end up.

Re: Let's Talk QB Height (w/ Daniel going to N.O.)
although 6ft should be the minimum for a QB as height is concerned, Football IQ is what holds alot of guys back more than height....Brady, P. Manning, Brees,Matt Ryan, Flacco(football smarts)
Teams should try placing a bigger emphases on Football IQ...ala making checks at the line, reading a defense |
Re: Let's Talk QB Height (w/ Daniel going to N.O.)
Problem is, everyone who actually saw Chase Daniel in person said he was nowhere near 6 feet tall. I kept hearing that he was more like 5'9 or maybe 5'10.
Theismann was also 6'2 as was Joe Montana. Doug Flutie was well under 6 feet too. So I guess it just depends on how adept they are at seeing the field when they're not as tall as others. There have been plenty of 6'5 quarterbacks who couldn't see the field either.
Theisman was listed as 6' and ive heard people say that was stretching it |
Re: Let's Talk QB Height (w/ Daniel going to N.O.)
My general position on shortness, is that if college ball didn't weed you out as being a deficient passer who can't see in the NFL, then you probably can easily compensate for it.
