Re: Samuels Agrees to Restructured Deal
ill stick up for the skins here. Samuels play has not declined like Jansens. if he wants, looks like he could play another 5 years at a fairly high level. and Ruhskin haven't you learned? the skins are never in cap hell. this is one area the skins have thrived in( cap management)
:) LOL. Let me re-phrase this then: The Redskins are temporarily in cap hell and are making appropriate adjustments. |
Re: Samuels Agrees to Restructured Deal
Given the fact that the Redskins are in cap hell again, I would say that this is a typical move and expected.
Cap hell doesn't exist.. For about the 8th straight year of explaining this, cash>cap. Remember all of the past 8-10 offseasons when the sky was falling because of our cap situation? Remember when we were going to have to field nothing but rookies and street free agents? Yeah, that doesn't ever happen because Snyder has a money printing machine and can keep paying big $ in cash and backloading phony money. The biggest issue isn't our cap each year, it's our lack of a plan. |
Re: Samuels Agrees to Restructured Deal
The Redskins are clearing more cap room by restructuring contracts than I had anticipated. I did not count on them extending players, I expected restructures. But by doing extensions instead, they are clearing more cap room.
This means either: - They can afford to keep Springs and Jason Taylor at their current cap numbers, and have a modest free agency push. - They can extend other players (like Griffin, Moss, Rabach and Smoot), keep Taylor and Springs at current cap numbers, and make a major push in free agency. We'll see. |

You read my mind. I fear the results. I can see it now..."Skins trade 1st round pick to reacquire Mark Brunell!!" This FO is going to give me an ulcer! HAIL!! |

Restructuring deals = a quick (not smart) way of getting us under the cap. Yes, I know we don't plan for the future (etc., etc.) but this is the reality now and that's how they are dealing with it. Besides, the cap will most likely go away and we won't need to deal with this issue. |
Re: Samuels Agrees to Restructured Deal
The salary cap is the one area I actually trust the Redskins with. There is no cap hell.

For as much as some 'hope' for that uncapped scenario, trust me, it'd be the worst thing imaginable as a football fan. Remember the NHL strike that eliminated like a year and a half? Think along those lines. |

Trust me, I've been dreading this cap-less scenario, but a lot of people are saying that this is going to happen. Some people have mention that use of the franchise tag as another sign that the CBA will not be renewed. And honestly, I don't have any confidence in the NFLPA right now, I mean how long does it take to find a replacement for the late Upshaw? |

not as long as revenues or new TV deals keep pushing the cap up at the current rate. If the NFL's revenues stop growing... well, then it becomes a problem. |
Re: Samuels Agrees to Restructured Deal
Being a longtime Redskins Fan has taught me one thing. I should get in the front seats of this roller coaster strap in and hold my hands up when going down hill to really feel the free fall. And at the end of the year get back in line to do it again!!!!!:woot:

Re: Samuels Agrees to Restructured Deal
Blah. Lengthening the contract of yet another player over 30 years old. Same old same old. Where we are with Jansen right now (massive decline in talent, too expensive to cut) is where we'll be with Samuels in a few seasons. I know, I know, there may not be a salary cap...
if its anything like the contracts of ARE and Carter, Samuels will be very cuttable in 2010 and/or 2011. Not that i want us to cut Samuels, but we could always cut him and resign him to something reasonable then. Of course, its always possible that we restructure Samuels again next year and give him all his garaunteed money in an uncapped 2010. That way, we have flexibility with what we do after that. |

well, atleast in the past few years, weve never been in hell, but we've always been fairly limited in what we can do. However, id much rather be in our position than that of a team like cincy: They always have cap room and never use it. However, id love to have an owner with a willingness to spend money and stay out of the way, combined with a GM who knew what he was doing. If that were the case, we'd be the "New England" of the NFL year in and year out. |

:laughing- Being a Redskin fan is definitely an up and down ride. |
Re: Samuels Agrees to Restructured Deal
Having old & unperforming vets who cannot be cut due to cap ramifications could be considered cap hell in that sense?
I hope his restructure is along the Carter/Randle el lines that it lessens the hit next year or '11. I'm no salary cap expert but as long as these restructures ensure that down the line, we can release the player if they are no longer playing at the level of his contract or something like that, then this is the right direction. |
Re: Samuels Agrees to Restructured Deal
generally our restructures (like almost all restructures) give more guaranteed money upfront to decrease the immediate cap hit and make them cost more to keep/cut the following years. El and carter make them cheaper NOW and result in more deadcap if they get cut then before.
4 restructures and cuts (springs/taylor + daniels/marcus) = possibly hall and haynesworth, but not much else. |
