Jansen is still the starter in my book, but it's a great luxury to have Heyer. 31 isn't old for an NFL linemen.

you're right about that. lorenzo alexander and mike sellers have been helping him a lot. The kid does have great talent and strength, though.

I like Heyer, and I think he has a chance to beat out Jansen as a starter if he gets a lot stronger & develops as a run blocker.

back during camp we were discussing Wade at LG & someone said Jansen would be a better guard than Wade. I agreed then & the thought has crossed my mind as a possibility. Add to that, Alexander might be developed as a guard next season. With Heyer & Alexander, the staff may decide not to draft any o-linemen, similar to what they did this year w/the d-line, picking up undrafted guys like Wilson & Buzbee.

Stephon Heyer was a stud at Maryland, and has shown that he belongs in this league. However, Jansen is still a very capable starter in the NFL, and would be the bookend tackle he's been known to be. He is also a vocal team leader, and his leadership is needed on and off the field.

Think about this... In a few years (2) you insert Lorenzo Alexander as a guard and Heyer as a Tackle. This could be a great combination with a little more experience. They've used Alexander as a pulling G recently with Heyer as tackle and I like what I saw.

I've never once seen them pull either Fabini or Kendall to insert Alexander as a guard. I think you meant they use Alexander in different ways, moving him around, sometimes having him pull. But never from the G position.

They used him as a pulling guard in a few plays against the Giants. Excerpt from the article: The loss of Thomas prompted Saunders to adjust some blocking schemes to better suit the strengths of right guard Jason Fabini, a 10-year veteran who played tackle for his first nine seasons, and Alexander's athleticism has enabled Saunders to call running plays with him as a pulling guard. Alexander also has gone in motion on some plays and performed well in pass protection.

Lorenzo runs a 4.8 in the 40, he weighs 300 lbs and he's only 6 ft tall. He would work well as a pulling guard, but i think it would be detrimental to his career if he typecasted himself this early. He dimensions make him a better 3rd tackle in our jumbo package, or as a strictly blocking tight end. I liked how he helped contain the line integrity on the edges during our running plays.

As for Heyer. He is young depth that will hopefully continue to develop. He is still a project and i think that a healthy Jon Jansen is probably a 20% better tackle than Heyer right now.

Losing Randy was the main contributor to Portis' 3.9 average this year, not so much Jon's absence.

Just my opinion.

heyer is a quality backup. he's not a quality starter right now.

let them fight it out, but i'm pretty sure jansen would win easily next year.
