There's no salary cap motivation to cut him, so if he does get cut, it will be because he's simply outplayed by 4 other DTs on the roster. Griffin, Montgomery, and Golston are sure bets for the roster. I think Big Joe still has a good chance to make it, but he'll be in a dogfight with Boschetti and a few other guys.

From reading this stuff of how the coaches are beffing up players working with them this off season it sounds to me that they where happy with the talent on the teams just thought some players had things they needed to do. This kid of explains what we did in the draft but only time will tell. I was listening to the Riggins show yesterday and he was getting pumped up. He said it the first time in a while that he really thought that the skins had a good team and was talking about the playoffs.

If Golston and Montgomery have solid seasons, then it justifies picking Landry at six. Hell, Landry is tough to pass up either way though.

agreed. If Griffin gets beat out for his starting spot I (& many others I"m sure) would be surprised, but maybe not totally shocked. Griffin showed a good burst & motor last year & Montgomery is supposedly a great athlete.
These two guys could be the difference between us being 10th or 30th against the run by season's end. It looks like they will be in the rotation and get a lot of snaps, starting or not.

If GW plans to unleash the DEs a lot more often, allowing them to rush the passer more, then a bigger onus will fall on the DTs and the LBs to stop the run.

Somebody has to contain the edges on run defense, and I think the OLBs are going to need to be active to contain the edges since the DEs will be rushing upfield, meaning the DTs and Fletcher will need to hold up in the middle or we'll get gashed.

Having Golston and Montgomery at 315 pounds makes me feel a lot better about the scheme.
Wow, Golston must have been packing it in at the all you can eat buffet LOL

Seriously though, it's very good to hear. Golston seems to have the frame to handle the weight, and let's face it speed wasn't his game anyway. All these guys need to do is control the line of scrimmage and not get shoved around, and let the LBs fly in and do their jobs.
I'm more concerned about if Goldston and Montogmery can actually play or not. You don't have to be 320 pounds to be an effective DT in the NFL. My question is do these guys know how to play with leverage and do they have good technique.

I think Golston proved last year he can play at this level, the jury is still out on Montgomery.

I honestly didn't see it. I saw a lot of times where Goldston was getting pushed around alot. But he was a rookie and I'm sure the defensive coaches know what they are doing.

What I would like to see is how Montgomery is going to play. From what everyone is saying he really has the raw talent to excel. Wynn compared Montgomery to Marcus Stroud of Jacksonville.

I thought Golston flashed enough and he's certainly got a great work ethic and motor. I think with experience he'll continue to develop.

I guess Salavea gets the nod over Boschetti - is it reasonable to think any descent DT's get cut over training camp or are rosters pretty much set and all that is available is leftover crap at this point. I would think next offseason the team has got to use a couple of draft picks on DE's and DT's.

I don't get the "Dan Snyder being Dan Snyder, they took a safety" line. I've had my fill of these lists, forecasts, and roundups from the national press. I think we Warpathers are spoiled. I can get draft analysis that is better than these turds from National Press from anyone of ten schmoes at this site. Which means that either the national press sucks or we have some exceptional schmoes here.

I think that Golston did a good job last year as a rookie. He obviously needed a little more size and has achieved that this year. I'm looking for him to be improved against the run. Montgomery has to prove something. Lots of guys have raw talent, but you have to be able to bring it on the field.
Schneed - with this in mind do you think Big Joe Salavea is going to get cut?
Salave'a and Wynn both have been excellent (relative to the crappiness of the d vs. the run these last two seasons. Neither will get cut. I'd like to get Montgomery in there at least for 100 snaps this season to see what we have against the run. If he can hold his ground, we can let him play and develop some pass rushing skills.

Golston being heavier is good news, but he's still got a lot to prove.

I totally agree. Golston was decent for a rookie and excellent for a 6th round pick, but he's got a ways to go before he's someone to depend on. In particular, he didn't look good against the run and I'm hoping that the increased weight will help in that regard.

I'm also not sold on Montgomery (we hardly saw him last season). I have a lot of hope for him (as I do for Golston), but I don't feel totally comfortable about our DT situation.

I am looking for more out of Montgomery than Golston this year.
