Re: BREAKING NEWS: Multiple Sources Confirm Jim Zorn Named Head Coach
I think, (and I know a lot of people will disagree with this, and thats fine), that if we were OK with Zorn as the O.C., then we by neccessity have to be ok with this promotion. His role isn't going to be all that much different, and we were already talking about how the coordinators were going to overshadow the head coach. So now, one of them was made head coach. That's not really any big deal when you think about it.
If he wasn't ready for this job, then I don't think you can make the argument that he was ready for the O.C. position.
I think he will benefit from having Blache leading the other side. He can be very hands off with the defense |

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Multiple Sources Confirm Jim Zorn Named Head Coach
Basically at this point, I was willing to give anyone a shot. I wanted Williams, it didn't work out, so I stand behind Zorn and I'm going to hope for the best. I really think our offense is going to be in great hands, which is going to be awsome to see....I'm slightly worried about our defense at this point. We have some great players on that side of the ball, but I just hope we can maintain some sort of power without Williams.
I may be off in this assessment, but I think the defense will be as good if not better with Blache.. Many of the players credited him with simplifying the defense this year from Williams stubborn insistence to his schemes.. Landry will be a year more experienced, hopefully Rogers and McIntosh return relatively healthy (and Rogers learns how to catch), Montgomery and Golston can take the next steps.. I'm not at all worried about the defense, let's hope Zorn can take the offense to higher levels.. |
Re: BREAKING NEWS: Multiple Sources Confirm Jim Zorn Named Head Coach
Jim Zorn is a great coach selection. An NFL QB of his stature is always a field leader and the QB coach is the most important positional coach. He has more leadership experience in fact than on paper. The HC transition (after Gibb's decision) was mainly driven by the FO desire to install the WCO. Zorn has much more experience with the WCO than Fassel who had little. Putting the whole bag into his hands then makes sense since he won't have a HC muddying the process and the D is good already w/ strong leadership. Zorn has the ability to make the Skins nation proud again. Hail to the Redskins; welcome Coach Zorn!

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Multiple Sources Confirm Jim Zorn Named Head Coach
Yes. I'm in shock and in amaze, but yes somehow this is ok. Even more than Zorn as OC. I saw him play in all his seasons with the Seahawks and I even had his jersey as a kid. Zorn seems like a thorough, tough and good person. He'll bring people in that are 'Gibbs' kinda players and personel. I can't believe Snyder and Cerrato didn't pick Fassel, but I couldn't be happier that they didn't!!! GO REDSKINS! Let's get this baseball crap over with so we can get back on the field!!!
PS- Grade of B+ on the hire. I think we'll see instant production if we can stay healthy. |
Re: BREAKING NEWS: Multiple Sources Confirm Jim Zorn Named Head Coach
if he has an awful year next season, snyder will pay him off and bring cowher in i bet.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Multiple Sources Confirm Jim Zorn Named Head Coach
if someone told me 6 weeks ago that JIM ZORN would be our head coach i would first ask who the fuck jim zorn was and then tell them to lay off the drugs.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Multiple Sources Confirm Jim Zorn Named Head Coach
like it better than fassel or mooch. cowher or marty or gw would have been better, but this is the next best thing.
hopefully he can handle the jump. |

If he wasn't ready for this job, then I don't think you can make the argument that he was ready for the O.C. position.
I have to respectably disagree with you here. His roll will be significantly different as a HC rather than the OC. "Head coaches have to worry about so many things that go beyond what Zorn has proven to be good at: teaching and coaching. Head coaches are CEOs as much as anything." I couldn't say it any better. Another telling quote: "As one of Zorn's former co-workers put it to me this afternoon: 'The best thing that happened to Jason was having Zorn named offensive coordinator and working with quarterbacks. The worst thing was Zorn being named head coach, because it will be harder for him to be as involved coaching the position.'" In addition, being ready to be an OC in no way makes you ready to be a HC. They are completely different jobs with very different priorities. An OC can focus on X's and O's and only be concerned with what the Offense is doing. A HC has to be a tactician, coordinating both the offensive and defensive philosophies to work for the benefit as a whole. In addition, the OC and DC are both under the protective umbrella of the HC who can deflect criticism when things go awry as young coordinators learn the craft. No such protection for the HC. I am hoping the guy is the next great story in the NFL but you can't say there is no significant difference between the OC and the HC, nor can you say that because he was named an OC 2 weeks ago, he was ready to be an HC. |
Re: BREAKING NEWS: Multiple Sources Confirm Jim Zorn Named Head Coach
I don't know enough about Zorn to voice a yay or nay about his HC promotion. I do have my reservations about how the team will respond though. This feels eerily similar to the '06 offseason, and we're right back in a full fledged rebuild.
After a strong playoff push in '05, I know a lot of our players felt we were only a few moves away from being Super Bowl contenders. Then we bring in Brandon Lloyd, Adam Archuletta, Kenny Wright, Christian Fauria, and ARE (The only guy whose really worked out) and sent packing are: Ryan Clark, Walt Harris, and Robert Royal. (Guys who I felt played pretty well and the players seemed to value) Bam! We're rebuilding, a huge overhaul. After another strong late season playoff push in '07, it seems we're closer than we thought again. There hasn't been a big player personeel change yet but a massive change at the top. Yes, that's to be expected, losing a HC the calibre of Joe Gibbs, but where the weariness of rebuild sinks in is that we've got a newbie HC whose going to go through growing pains and a team that's hungry to go to the next level. All of a sudden, we're knee deep in a rebuild again. I wasn't big on Fassel or Mooch, but they have something valuable that this team needs: playoff experience. It may or may not have been enough playoff experience to get us over the hump, but definitely enough that a coach wouldn't have to come in and prove themselves to the team and enough to keep the heaviness of rebuilding out of the locker room. Hopefully, I'm wrong, but this '08 season already has shades of '06 looming over it. |
I think there are plenty of teams and owners that have more patience than the Redskins and their fans
You know, you've spent several posts saying how Redskins fans in particular have less patience than many other fans. I couldn't disagree more. If there are people who still call themselves fans of this franchise since Lil' Danny has taken over and put up with all of his growing pains, then they are the most patient people on earth. |
Re: BREAKING NEWS: Multiple Sources Confirm Jim Zorn Named Head Coach
It's really kind of ridiculous that people are already willing to crucify Zorn, or anoint him the next Vince Lombardi.
Is it too crazy to ask that we just let this play out and evaluate the decision at the end of his first season? Why is everyone so quick to make a prediction of doom and gloom or nirvana? Furthermore, that second video posted by SmootSmack is the funniest thing I've seen in a while. |
Re: BREAKING NEWS: Multiple Sources Confirm Jim Zorn Named Head Coach
It also looks like the raiders are getting a new head coach as well :click

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Multiple Sources Confirm Jim Zorn Named Head Coach
I wonder what players Zorn will try to bring over from the hawks to help us upgrade? My choice is O-line. I really liked the way the giants built their team with big and physical players.
