Re: Trent Williams holding out for new deal
Nice call.

Donald Penn is a legit Left Tackle who can help out if needed. Now let’s hope a Left guard can emerge as well as Trent can show up.

In a way, I think Bruce is now prepared to see if Trent is willing to miss game checks.
Yeah, it definitely undermines Trent's leverage. For one, now they have a plan B, and if that money went to Trent instead they'd have no plan B if he were to be injured again.

Honestly, they have all the leverage as long as Penn stays healthy. I don't see Trent sitting out the year, and I don't see him taking his frustration out in the locker room either.

Wouldn't it be nice is Christian emerges this year as well? Even as a solid swing tackle, it would make a hell of a difference for the future of this team.

Re: Trent Williams holding out for new deal

Let's not overstate things though, Donald Penn helps but he missed 12 games last year and he's 36. Even when he was on top of his game two years ago, he still wasn't Trent. Trent still has some leverage. But as the date gets closer to September eventually he'll have to make a decision, do I play for the $11M I'm contracted for, or do I give it up and sit out.

I still continue to think Trent will be back by week 1. Unless the Skins just paid a lot for Penn, in which case trade starts coming onto my radar.

Good post. I think Trent will be there week one. How many times over the years have we seen 'camp holdouts' that actually holdout into the regular season? 1? Maybe 2?

They start losing REAL paydays in the regular season and will NOT leave that money on the table.

Reading into the Penn deal is not unlike Alfred Morris back in Dallas. A 1 year deal with zero cap hit. A warm camp body who will be released when Zeke shows up week 1 of the regular season.

When (not if) Trent comes back, unless Penn wows the world to a rotational spot, will get released as well.

A placeholder is all they are.

He's a one year player, at most. At 36 he is ancient as an OL player. I'd rather see Trent get a little more money and play this season. His "cancer" scare may have got him thinking about getting his payday now.

Amen to that.

Maybe he is just using this as an excuse to enjoy his air conditioned house and swimming pool a while longer. It may have been 40 years since I played football in High School and College but I will venture a guess the guys in the 300 pound range hate summer practice. Unless something has changed everybody did the same conditioning drills, including sprints, running laps, and the ropes, etc. Of course the big guys were given more time, but they still had to do them.
Penn makes me feel slightly better than I did....

Re: Trent Williams holding out for new deal

Penn isn't the answer. He's done. If he has to play significant time it won't be good. Should have just given Ty the money and not overpaid Collins imo. You can get by with average safety play. A back up tackle who can play both sides is crucial. Especially on a team that has injury prone starters at tackle. That to me is more important than overpaying Collins.

Chico23231 07-30-2019 10:12 PM

Re: Trent Williams holding out for new deal

Penn is fine as a swing tackle. The way Trent been missing time lately, I feel much better with depth at Tackle now. Flowers and Geron need to get their shit together. But we need Trent back in the fold pronto...he can’t be effectively replaced by anyone regardless.

Under the circumstances, having Penn is a lot better than not having him. He is better than Flowers.

Exactly. It doesn't matter who we bring in, if silverback doesn't come back our Left Tackle position only gets weaker.

And it doesn't really cost him anything until and unless he misses the first week of the season. Plus if he couches it in medical and not just money he maintains his standing as a locker room leader looking out for all the players.

The only thing I have read which is disconcerting to me is that there supposedly is no dialogue right now. I see that as a negative, when combined with the team's desparate search for a competent LT. It's almost the exact reverse of when a team tells a player to go out and see what the market bears. TW is letting the team find out that there is no supply of competent LT's and hopes they will see it his way and up his contract. They better.

If a team calls the #Redskins about Trent Williams and they pick up the phone and say "we're not interested" then have there been talks?

If you think yes, the #Redskins have had talks about trading Trent. If you believe those aren't talks (I don't), then they haven't per sources

If they make a trade NE is the team to trade with. They have 13 draft choices.

And the Redskins should be able to get 3 picks.

However, NE has no cap space.

I really don't see it that way. The Redskins hold his rights and can still just sit back and do nothing. When he starts missing hefty game checks then I'll believe it's a fractured relationship. Until then everything is just a bunch of rumors.

As for the Pats, I hope we don't trade with them. We already know who'll get the short end of the stick. Bruce Allen should never ever ever be in charge of any trades, ever.

Warthog 07-31-2019 07:31 PM

Re: Trent Williams holding out for new deal

I've read that Trent is pissed with the medical staff and doesn't trust Bruce Allen (what a surprise there). Possible trade partners are the Texans (most cap money), Pats (because they love trading mid-draft picks for outstanding disgruntled players) or the Browns (because they are finally getting their shitte together).

With Bruce Allen, I can easily see us getting a third draft pick from the Pats for one of our best players.

Trent has made almost $100 mill with the 'skins. Perhaps he might want to get a chance of a SB ring and play for a top-quality organization vs. Bruce Allen's & Danny's amateur hour.

So let’s start guessing what the Skins will get for him.

And on another note, how many more people have to want to leave before Snyder realizes that Bruce Allen is a worthless piece of shit that needs to go.

well said! Bruce Allen is a cancer for this team. He's the most disliked GM by the player rep in the entire NFL. How hard is it to hire a real football GM who can then help decide whether to keep Gruden next year? Snyder first had Cerrato (who was a joke but stayed on for many years) and now they have Bruce Allen, who is hated by player reps and probably the players they represent. All I can assume from these two choices is that Dan Snyder wants a non-football TOADIE in that job.

Trent has lost value for the team as a trade because he said he wants to leave. We'll be lucky to get a second and third for him.
