Re: Fresh Start Political Thread

We don't have plenty of money. We just keep borrowing and borrowing and borrowing money we don't have. We are in debt 29 trillion dollars.

It's incredibly unfair to say if you're against this monster bill you're doing it at the expense of your country. There are valid reasons why people are against it.

Spending tons of money does not automatically equal good for the country.

If that was the case, this country would be absolutely perfect by now. That's all our government does is print and spend money they don't have.

Okay let me rephrase then. We are an incredibly wealthy country with vast amount or resources. We are choosing to utilize that capital in a way that benefits very few instead of benefiting the country as a whole. Benefiting many should not be viewed as socialism but a country doing right by their citizens not the industrial-military complex. Whether we are in debt or not is irrelevant if people like Joe Manchin say "I can support A but not B" even though B will help us and A doesn't

If not the gov't who else? Let's take away Social Security, SSI, HEAP/HUD/SNAP, Medicare and Medicaid and see how that works.

Well to be fair to Manchin it was the White House that were playing games on the cost of the bill. The CBO said it wasn't paid for and the White House response was to shorten the time of the programs to 3 years while stating next 10 years of a tax increase (that they would have to extend after 3 years) would pay for them. Manchin knew that Dems would have to be in power to extend the taxes and if they were they'd also extend the programs - ie it wasn't going to be payed for. To clarify a Republican controlled Congress = no tax extension which means increased debt. A Dem controlled congress = Tax extension which pays for 1st three years but then also means extension of programs as well which means increased debt.

I agree the game playing is counterproductive. It should be okay to say that providing services will cost money and not lie about it.

The infrastructure bill that actually got passed was 2702 pages. I mean, c'mon, no way you can possibly believe a bill needs 2700 pages, if it was actually drafted strictly for national infrastructure. That bill had more pork than a sausage factory.

If anyone here has read a 2700 page book, you're a superior human than me.

The infrastructure bill compared to BBB is childs play.

Has anyone on the left here, ever lived anywhere, where they were remotely the minority in terms of politics?

I'm from Bay Area, CA, which is as liberal as it gets on the west coast. And Redskins/Team is in the Virginia/Maryland/D.C. corridor.

I'm curious to know.

Half my family is from the boonies - hardcore Trump country and they're all solid red. My dad is too.

Sometimes it feels like north and south Korea with how different we are.

NJ is a blue state, but my county and town are solid red. I work in a neighboring town that is straight Trump shrines in every yard. I swear to God they go to church to pray to and for him. At least twice a day I have homeowners trying to talk to me about the deep state and why Biden ruined their lives. Im thinking dude your front yard has been littered with old toilets, trash, and broken down cars long before Biden took office but I usually just smile, nod my head, and get back in my car like our friend in the woods.

Over 50% of infrastructure bill was corporate giveaways. One of the reasons I did not really understand why progressives allowed that to get passed first. there are enough in congress to hold their votes and elicit real change for good.

To your other post: I was born in Beaufort, SC and still consider SC my home state but after college I could not bring myself to move back there. I was a military brat and spent most of my life outside Fort Bragg, Fort Benning and Fort Polk. I have had enough of southern conservatism. I also lived in Fort lewis. The western conservative mindset is far more to my liking than the southern.

Elise Stefanik's office is walking distance away from where I live, so yeah, that should tell you a little about where I'm at

This is my idea of how bills get drafted in DC.

Just pass around the pen and everyone gets to write in what they want that benefits them.

C'mon, move to Mount Pleasant, SC, in February. We can be neighbors.
