So you think 4.64 isn't fast? It is, especially for a qb, he was running against a lot of SEC db's that run in the 4.6 range I bet.
Not saying you specifically, but I think many of us get caught up in 40 times & think that 4.3 is exponentially faster than 4.6. Sure it's considerably faster, but we're still talking tenths of a second. An elusive 4.6 offensive player can make up that difference & then some w/one quick move to get a defender behind him. A qb that runs as fast as 4.6 is still pretty rare in the nfl.
Sure 4.64 is fast especially for a qb, but I think there will be two sub 4.5 qb's at this years combine alone. Jake Locker is even faster than Newton, but I still think Newton is getting below 4.5 although he has such long strides his timed speed might not be as good as the tape. |

The combine is good for actually getting REAL #s on these guys, rather than what their schools report. They say you can't teach speed, which is true essentially, but you can teach sprinting technique. Guys can improve by a tenth or so in the 40 simply by working on their stance & first step out of the blocks & correcting flaws in form. i.e. to some degree, I believe the 40 test becomes a "teaching the test" excercise. Generally, long strides are not conducive to sprinting. The longer the stride, the quicker the turnover has to be. Sprinters win w/short, quick strides. |

Re: 2011 Senior Bowl Week
Well that was a waste of my time today. They went to commercial every five minutes and refused to show anything..
I'd like to say Locker sucked because out of the 10 plays they showed of him, one was an interception and the other a dropped snapped... but I'll take this stuff with a grain of salt. The Bengals offensive coordinator was noticeably frustrated with Locker's play. |
Re: 2011 Senior Bowl Week
It's hard to say 'trade the pick', but i did and here is why. I believe minus TE we take the best player available. But if the draft falls to where we can move back to later in the 1st and pick up a mid round pick, i think you have to do that to help fill in for the loss of draft picks via the Donovan trade. We need talented young bodies, and if the draft is more or less throwing shit at a wall and seeing what sticks(which i think it is), then we need a whole hell of a lot more shit.

Re: 2011 Senior Bowl Week
Is there a pass rushing type of stud that would be possibly available at #10? Or even a lockdown corner? Gotta go BPA based on needs at #10.

Re: 2011 Senior Bowl Week
If nothing else, Locker's stock dropping is good for us. He may fall to the 2nd like Clausen last year. If Shanny really likes him but thinks he can get him in the 2nd, at least the risk/bust factor is much reduced, though we need virtually ALL of our picks to be starters w/in a couple years.

I wouldn't be surprised if we, along with some other teams, use this year to select a QB and then again next year. A lot of scouts/execs feel this could be a year to get a guy who can be your solid long-term #2/potential starter and next year there are more franchise QB options. With the 18 game season potentially on the horizon, teams are feeling more and more pressure to have 2 QBs. Not having free agency before the draft complicates things because guys like OG Davin Joseph, LB LaMarr Woodley and RB (who I have not yet been able to identify) I know are high on our radar, but if we can't get them before the draft it changes our thinking. I'm not convinced that we're seriously interested in Newton or Locker or any other QB at 10. Not right now at least. But we'll show it because likely one of them will be there when we pick and we'd like to move down or out of the 1st and pick up extra 2nd,3rd, and/or 4th round picks where guys like Stanzi or Ponder are on our radar. |

Von Miller is a pass rushing stud who I've been talking about since the NCAA season ended. Since his stock is rising quickly, he'll most likely be gone which leaves us with Robert Quinn or Ryan Kerrigan who's more of a natural 4-3 DE. Anyone else would be a big reach. |

Of course that qb in the 2nd, 3rd,etc. could be the guy. So the FAs you mention above ARE rumored to be on our radar? Sounds about right, I was just hoping that no fa rb's were considered. If one is signed, likely signals CP's departure. And Stanzi & Ponder definitely on our radar? |

And Stanzi & Ponder definitely on our radar?
Joseph and Woodley are definitely very high on our radar. Problem is well, first of all this whole CBA mess; and secondly the Bucs and Steelers won't let them go easily. I don't know who this RB is, just heard that they had their eye on one. Then again, I heard they were going to make a big push for Sproles last year and that didn't happen (but I was right about Peppers!). I don't know how serious we are about Stanzi, but I know we've heavily scouted and spoken to Ponder this season...but then again, part of that could have been "covert' scouting on his teammate Rodney Hudson. Similar to a couple of years ago when we there was all this buzz about showing interest in Russell when really it was his teammate Landry (Russell incidentally has been working out with an undisclosed AFC East team and expects to sign a contract with them soon. He expects to, not sure if the team does. My guess is it's the Dolphins as the Bills seem to want to go the draft route-Andy Dalton round 2?) Also, Skins spoke with your boy Carmichael and some OT. Can't recall who. Guy from Pittsburgh I think. |

Seems like Rex Ryan would be open to using him in the wildcat the way they have w/Smith. Then again, the wildcat is so 2008! |
Re: 2011 Senior Bowl Week
Well we can't take a QB who's biggest flaw is accuracy at #10.
I mean come on. Accuracy? I say trade back and draft another Tackle. |

It's not the Jets. That I know. |
