RI: Jeremy Bridges agrees to terms

The Redskins have agreed to terms on a deal with veteran offensive lineman Jeremy Bridges, Coach Jim Zorn said, and will sign him tonight, pending the results of a physical.

So does this solve our RT woes or is he just another body in the mix?

Expert's Take Bridges has been with three teams in his ive years in the league. He was picked up by the Panthers and started all 14 games he played in 2006, and in 2007 he started 10 of the 13 games he played after being suspended at the beginning of the season for conduct detrimental to the team. He has some talent and teams keep trying to get him on the field. He is fairly athletic and has quick feet in a small area, and can use his long arms to control and steer defensive linemen past the play. Bridges can drive his feet to sustain blocks but just does not finish most blocks off like he should. He is a little stiff in the hips and can struggle to adjust and recover when he starts to lose it and will fall off some blocks. He has adequate lateral range in pass pro but does not recover and right himself very quickly against counter moves. He does not play as big as he measures and will get out-muscled more than you'd expect. If he can learn to devote himself to the game and keep his intensity level up he can be a very functional right tackle.

Certainly won't hurt to have him around if he can pass a physical and keep his nose clean.

He is listed as a Guard. So I'm not so sure how this will affect our right tackle position OR if can make the change or has already played the tackle position in the past. But solid Guard depth wouldn't hurt a bit.

If he grows up and concentrates on football, this could be a good signing. Maybe our guys will help him with that.

He and Williams have some experience starting in the NFL , it would be nice to have some guys who have started for depth . We need to stay healthy and have Heyer and Rinehart to make some strides this year . Maybe one of the 4 actually is so great they crack the starting lineup ?

I don't think it will be, but it definitely could be. I thought I heard he was listed as a guard/tackle so if now he's only listed as a guard it makes you think he's not in competition with Jansen and Heyer. Still like the signing though, we got a veteran o-line that are all friends so I don't think he'll be a locker room problem.

sounds like every position is settled (who starts) except the rt spot.

Portis said that for the OL we are searching for one or two diamonds in the rough. Apparently the plan is to polish many stones, looking for one to be that diamond. Given that many of these "warm bodies" can play tackle, the RT problem MAY have been solved. It seems that we have many RG fill-ins, anyway, should Thomas get hurt/still be hurt.

September is also a long time away and more obvious FA prospects may arise before then. The optimist in me recognizes that the FO is at least trying to fix the right side of the line rather than just sitting on their hands.

Every team has a weakness/weak link somewhere. Our most glaring weak link right now appears to be OL, RT being the biggest question mark. But look we do have 2 guys on our team that have started for us, plus a few others with starts in multiple years for other teams. I believe that on paper this is our most complete team in years and if none of these new additions work out, we should still have enough cap room to sign someone else should anyone be waived soon. So I have NO problem at all with the signings of, Williams, Bridges, Kelly, Hackett, etc. to add depth and compete for a roster spot. Keep bringing in guys until we find that diamond Clinton is looking for. But damn Clinton, just look in the mirror, you normally have a few huge ones in those ears!

As long as he's focused on football this could be a good pickup, but right now this is no more than a depth signing. He has some RT experience, but right now I see him as the backup to Thomas at RG in case Thomas gets hurt.
