Our 2010 First Round Draft Pick Should Be...

This isn't about what player to draft, but rather what position.

Seems like we're pretty split between OL or QB. I'm in the draft a QB in the first round camp, but wanted to see what the group thought.

I threw in RB just for added measure

I'm with you, there. QB. Gotta start with a leader.

Would it be a cop-out to say "Best player available at a position of need"?

Re: Our 2010 First Round Draft Pick Should Be...

I would LOVE to have CJ Spiller. I think he's going to be a Chris Johnson type RB right out of the gate in the NFL. That said, I'd think we should move our high first round pick into the latter half of the first round for extra picks. Then we take the best O-lineman available, and look for a QB and RB in the 2nd/3rd rounds. We need to stockpile young talent, not shoot for that one potential gleaming star. I will go on record again saying I want ZERO part of Bradford or McCoy.

GMScud -- I think 90% of the people on this board and inside the skins organization would love to move down. Problem is, no one will move up into a top 5 pick. Too much money and compensation given up to get the pick. If we could trade down for picks, I'd be very, very happy.

O-line should be the #1 priority. QB is far too much of a crapshoot in the first round. See Heath Shuler, Patrick Ramsey, and Jason Campbell drafted in the 1st round here alone. Throw in Alex Smith, David Carr, Joey Harrington, JaMarcus Russell, Rick Mirer, Trent Dilfer, and Ryan Leaf - All Top 5 overall. We did pretty well with Chris Samuels as a top-5 pick. I want our new GM to find the next Chris Samuels.

What about Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco, Ben Roethlisberger, Peyton Manning, Phillip Rivers, Eli Manning, Jay Cutler, Aaron Rodgers, Carson Palmer....

BPA, with a caveat.

If Brandon Spikes is there, you take him. If there is a shutdown corner there, you take him. If Jahvid Best is there, you take him. If Eric Berry is there...etc.

If there is no best player available, like there's no situation where Orakpo falls to us, then you could reach a little bit on Russell Okung, or you could take the top quarterback on the board to satisfy a need. I don't think the top QB on my board is going to be gone until the middle of the first round, so it is what it is.

About half those guys would be moderately successful here in our current situation without major organizational overhaul, and pretty much every one of those guys (that could succeed here) was a top three draft pick. We don't figure to be picking in the top three, and there is maybe one of that type of player in this draft anyway, if that.

If there's a "first-overall" type quarterback, you take him. If there's not, we can do better.

We'll probably be picking between 7 and 12, so there will be good quarterbacks available for us there, but those same guys will probably be available in the second round. And I'm not a subscriber to the "you have to get someone this year" philosophy. Learn to do something well on offense first, and then pick a quarterback who can help to emphasize that strength.

And if that something happens to be "run the football", then pretty much anyone will suffice.

Im sure someone will want to move up. There will be that player that everyone is salivating over. Look at last year where everyone was trying to move up to select Sanchez with the Jets finally getting him.

With that said i think it's time for a fresh start at QB. You can still get Olineman deep in the draft but QBs are harder to find.

Re: Our 2010 First Round Draft Pick Should Be...

Since 1998, the first overall types have been:

- Peyton Manning
- Carson Palmer
- Phillip Rivers
- Ben Roethlisberger
- Matt Ryan

And you could possibly throw Rodgers and Eli in there as well, though I would not.

So if there's a first overall type once every 2 or 3 years, and it's generally pretty obvious when you have one, you can't pass on them. But it's not like you can trade up to try to create one, when it's just not there.

I think that it depends who's on the board at line still. I'm still not sold that we won't pick whose jersey will sell the best (maybe not literally.. but the "popular" option) at QB if we do that though.

What position was Sanchez drafted at last year?
