Deep Web

Just recently stumbled upon this whole deep web thing, just wondering more about it. What is it in a layman's terms? What good is in it? I have read about the the evil in it. Just looking for what the computer geniuses on here have to say about it...

Which is probably 85% of web content. Most of the web is "deep"

Re: Deep Web

well, some tor site have the bad pr0n or are used to launder money/bitcoin, and plenty of piracy stuff is floating around but the vast majority is just the same old boring stuff that's been around forever. I mean, people have been pirating software since the 1970s at least using ham radios or rc 232 modems.

so the ramifications are, if you don't notice it, then there's probably not much to worry about. if this site required you to login to see posts, it'd be part of the "deep web" too. it's just another silly term.

While I'm sure not EVERYTHING on there is the evil and illegal stuff you here about, there is a lot of drug, illegal weapon and sex trade (prostitutes, child porn, sex slavery trade) goes on there. Also, you'll probably see some images that scar you for life....from perverted to gruesome inhumanity. You can hire a hitman as easily as buying a book from Amazon.

I'm staying far away. I've heard enough to know I do not want to see these types of things.

Also heard there's a whole monetary system set up on it to buy drugs. You purchase another supposedly non-traceable type of online coin/credits and use that to make your purchases.

I'm sure you'll be monitored by the Government after you "find" yourself onto it.

Re: Deep Web

^ Are you talking about Silk Road?

That's just one site out there, it doesn't represent the deep web as a whole.

LOL!!! Yes I started the second season, which reminded me of it... But I did see the iceberg picture trying to explain the "deep" web... Just trying to get a better understanding of it, truthfully to stay ahead of my kids... Trying to know the danger before they do...

Re: Deep Web

Ah, that makes tons of sense. Good luck navigating it -- the whole concept of the deep web sort of confounds me.

Re: Deep Web

It is not a hard concept. Most of the web is hidden behind password protected sites. Or dynamically generated (meaning there is not a specific page but a system that takes a request from a user and makes the page based on it).

The vast majority of the deep web is boring corporate database stuff. The illegal element of it is a part...just like any community. There is not separate "deep web" internet...it's all the same essentially.

Now the dark web is sort of a subset of the deep web and it is essentially the "bad neighborhood". It exists on the internet like anything else but it may be concealed or protected via normal password methods or more sinisterly via non typical means of access like Tor network which allows both the content owners and requesters to be essentially anonymous in every way. That's where the criminal element spread their wings.
