Trotter gone after June 1?
With our bringing Brandon Short in today, who thinks the likelier scenario than the Skins running a 3-4 occasionally is the Skins cutting Trotter after June 1? How much does he count against the cap this year and down the line? Is he worth what we will be paying him? My two cents is that he is a good but not great player who has not played up to what we have paid him-

I can see him leaving. I know he got hurt his first year and was adjusting to Marvin Lewis' system, but great players make great plays no matter what. He hasn't made any great plays, so I wouldn't be sad to see him go.

He's got a huge contract too. That money could be better spent.

I like him and think that if used correctly (blitz) then he could be an asset for the team. However if we can replace him for younger and cheaper, I don't see any reason to hesitate. He's not exactly a life long skin so I don't feel bad cutting him.
I think he can still be an excellent LB in the league if used correctly, and I think he could work well with Williams. I am curious to see what happens! |

He counts $2.7 million against the cap this year (plus signing bonus)... next year is when his salary really spikes up to $4.5 mil (plus bonus). I could see him hanging around this year, but next year he's a goner for sure.

I don't think we'll be switching to the 3-4 and I don't think Trotter will be cut.
Williams likes his LB's and with Trotter, Arrington and Washington he'll have a heck of a threesome. |

Was Brandon Short brought in for a visit or did he sign a contract with the Skins?
We have enough LB's, we have other greater needs. I hope we are done signing LB's. |

MattyK- if we aren't switching to a 3-4, and Trotter isn't going to be cut, why are we still looking at LB's? We have Pierce and Mitchell for depth, so why bring in Short?

I don't see trortter going anywhere, he's still young and he was an animal in philli we just never used him correctly you have to have him going forward all the time he will wreck havoc in opposing team's backfield's this year because you can rest assured that william's is going to turn this guy loose.

Arrington (weak OLB), Trotter (MLB) and Washington (strong MLB) will start (if we stay 4-3) with Pierce (if he re-signs), Mitchell (if he re-signs), Short (if he signs) and/or Favors (if he signs) adding depth. Smith, Clemons, Spearman and Marshall will all be lucky to make the roster cut.

I think Trotter will at least stay with us this season. I hope Pierce re-signs too. He's a great back-up and could take Trotters place next season if they get rid of him for cap reasons. Otherwise, I can't see why we're still looking at LB's.

I calculate Trotter will count $3.86M against the cap in 2004 ($2.4M salary + $1.16M prorated bonus).
If they realease him prior to June 1st he will count $5.8M against the cap in 2004 ($1.16M * 5 yrs remaining on contract). If they release him after June 1st he will count $1.16M against the cap in 2004, and $4.64M against the cap in 2005. So they only save $2.7M by cutting him after June 1st, which just doesn't seem worth it. Not to mention they can save $1.3M on Moore, $900K on Trung, $660K on Chamberlain. The fact that releasing Trotter is even up for debate is a sign that Trotter is under a BAD CAP CONTRACT (the dreaded BCC ). The contract is a 7-year deal. 2004 is only the third year. If you are debating dropping a guy in year 3 of a 7-yr contract, then you signed him to a BCC. Last edited by CrazyCanuck; 03-09-2004 at 11:15 PM. |
