Penalties - What are they good for

Absolutely Nothin.

I wouldn't have expected this stat:

Rich Campbell ‏@Rich_Campbell

The #Redskins enter Week 3 the most penalized team in the NFL by far. They have 23 for 223 yds. Next worst is Philly with 19 for 168.

But I know our opponents have continued drives due to some stupid personal fouls from our defense. And obviously the Morgan penalty falls right in line with stupid is as stupid does.

My question is, can the Skins stop this trend? Or are we going to see more and more bonehead plays resulting in game changing penalties.

Re: Penalties - What are they good for

I think there are definitely penalties that the 'skins can reduce or eliminate. At the same time, I think there are penalties that they can't avoid - mainly due to the replacement refs.

The problem is, since we don't know how the refs are going to call the game, you don't know how aggressive you can play. When that happens, you either pull back way too much and allow the other team to walk all over you, or you're too aggressive and keep too many stalling drives alive with personal foul penalties. With the regular refs, you eventually develop a rapport with them, and you learn quickly how each officiating crew calls a game. Right now, teams have no idea what to expect.

its a mos def a factor and not a good one. Shows a lack of discipline and margin of error is small between a win/loss to be leading the league.

Hey Morgan penalty cost us a shot at a win. Bottomline, it has been very impactful.

Re: Penalties - What are they good for

There should also be a category for "good penalties" If a DE breaks free and is about yo blind side destroy RG3 for a 18 yard loss, loss of down, and possibly a TO...by all means Trent hold him

Shanny has got to clean this up. The crown of the most penalized team belongs to the Raidahs, not us.

I may be wrong but it seems we've been one of the tops in the NFL in penalties for years.

I agree! Because since these refs are so inconsistent, there's a good chance you will get away with the hold!

How many fall into this category? I get what you are saying but even the good penalties are masking bad play right?

Re: Penalties - What are they good for

Considering the state of the NFL Refs right now I believe it is a waste of time to analysis any penalty stats.

Every play right now I hold my breath because you don't know what those refs will see or not see. It is a crap shot.

I didn't think that was right, but didn't look it up. Here is one tweet on it, take it for what it's worth:

Grant Paulsen ‏@granthpaulsen

Some context to #Redskins' NFL-worst 23 penalties through 2 games. #Chiefs have only committed six. WSH averaged just 5 per game last year.

Re: Penalties - What are they good for

If I'm correct the Skins don't have their own set of Ref's its the same Refs last I checked. Maybe the Refs are out to get the skins so they make more calls against us. Just be glade we didn't get this ref on week one.

Starts with the coach(es). Sounds like ClubMed all over again. Shanahan shouldn't start Morgan this game at the least.

How does it sound like ClubMed?

I don't think anyone is giving Morgan a pass, but it also doesn't require overreaction on the coaches part. And it also depends on whether he "gets it". From what I've seen, it seems like he does.

Penalties are good to keep the game from turning into total chaos. Something the replacement refs have'nt learned yet.?
