Question for Canuck / Possible Brunell fix

I seem to recall that after the "retirement" of Deion Sanders, he was on our cap for several years. If I understand correctly, a player can be kept on the cap if the team does not wish to relinquish the rights of the player.

What is to stop us from signing Brunell to a long-term contract (say, the maximum length that bonuses are prorated) with a million dollar bonus, and telling him to "retire". Rather than pay him to occupy a roster spot, we could pay him to do less, but have it count for less as well. Then, when the cap situation is less dire, the team could relinquish his rights at their leisure.

Crazy Canuck, do you know if such a situation is possible?

Why would Brunnel agree to that?

Re: Question for Canuck / Possible Brunell fix

This is unrealistic.

1) You can't just tell somebody to retire. You either have to cut him or keep him on the team. It's the player's decision to retire.

2) Brunell doesn't even want to be a backup QB, let alone retired.

3) Signing him to a new restructured deal does not exonerate you from dealing with his original $8.6 million bonus against your cap. He'll never agree to retire, so your only option is to cut him. Doing so would result in the acceleration of his bonus, which would hit our cap with a good $7 million.

Unless he agrees to give back some of his signing bonus, we're stuck with him. That's what happens when you sign old guys to big bonuses.

What if he doesn't want to retire??

Best case scenario is he restructures his deal a bit. Basically we're going to bite the bullet with him eventually.

Ya I agree there's not much we can do with Brunell. I don't expect him to give back any money, and the size of his signing bonus means he's probably here through 2005 at least.

LOL, if we read that Brunell was beat repeatedly over the head with a hammer we'll know who did it

Re: Question for Canuck / Possible Brunell fix

The reason he'd want to retire is the firm knowledge that he's never going to start for another NFL franchise. The Redskins will not start him again. If Ramsey gets hurt, expect Hasselbeck to be the #1 the next week, even if Brunell is the listed #2. The Redskins couldn't trade Brunell for blankets laced with smallpox right now. If he was cut on March 2nd, I doubt his agent would hear anything other than the sound of crickets.

Why would Brunell retire? For extra money.

If Ramsey gets hurt you can bet Brunell will be back in there.

Like it or not Gibbs is a Brunell fan and I can't see Brunell getting buried on the depth chart as the #3 QB.

Re: Question for Canuck / Possible Brunell fix

The Brunell situation stinks.

For all the money we are paying Mark Brunell we could have gotten Matt Hasselbeck to be our backup and still saved 1 million dollars.

The only way this Brunell situation is going to go away is if he gives back all of his signing bonus.

Basically we are stuck with him.

Call me a homer, please. But is Tim Hasselback that bad. I really get excited when he goes in there. I've got hope for some reason.
