Re: What REALLY grinds your gears?

This would grind, somewhat:

Horrified British woman, 27, discovers that headaches and scratching sounds inside her head are FLESH-EATING MAGGOTS after trip to Peru

Rochelle Harris, 27, went on holiday to Peru with her boyfriend this year.

On the flight back she developed excruciating headaches, face pain, started hearing noises in her head and fluid then leaked from her ear.

Went to A&E where doctors thought she had a minor ear infection, but closer inspection revealed a New World Army Screw Worm fly had laid eggs in her ear which had burrowed 12mm into ear canal.

Luckily they had not spread to brain or near any major blood vessels
Surgeons removed the flesh-eating creatures and Rochelle made a full recovery

Re: What REALLY grinds your gears?

One night when I went to walk my dog I came back in and felt something on my neck I thought it was a Japaneses Beetle but then I felt the pinch of like a crab. I reached back to pull it off and it was 3/4 the length of my pinkie. I screamed like a girl scout.

Re: What REALLY grinds your gears?

I just got a new job, a REAL job finally, with AmeriCorps. I'm a transitional housing program assistant, working Operation Homefront (who works with military families).

It's a contract position for one year, but it's a federal government job and a step in the right direction, so after 6 years I'm finally kissing retail goodbye. This is really new to me but I'm pretty excited for it.

What's grinding my gears right now is all these background checks. I understand the necessity of it, but I need an FBI one and two state ones (because I'm living in DC and working in MD) I need to be fingerprinted, at least twice and despite getting instructions in writing, they're confusing as hell and going not only to the FBI place (in WV) but off to another state where I guess they're going reviewed and recorded.

I wish this was all just clearer to me, but I guess I'll get it all figured out soon. I've just never had to do all this before. Background checks were typically just done by the employer but Jesus, this is a lot of work.

Re: What REALLY grinds your gears?

awesome you landed a fed govt job .... i am so jealous. I spent a good year filling out apps for approx 30 openings and while i always cleared the first screening of being a qualified candidate i never got any closer .... i think it was bc i had no prior fed govt position and the positions i was applying for were level 12 and up which i am guessing only go to ppl with prior fed govt experience ....

i always figured you needed to start out as a janitor for a fed building or be former military to get a fed govt job.

It's not the ideal, but it's a place to start. I don't get to negotiate what my pay is, as it's consider a "living stipend" and I get benefits and what not taken out of that. After I'm done with the contract it's possible for me to get up to $5,000 to pay for school costs, student loan payments, etc but it's strictly for that. Seems this job is geared more towards people either right out of college or looking to go back.

I actually found the gig on Craigslist so, there's that.

What grinds my gears about applying for jobs there, getting emails like this:

Status Code: Status Message:

We have reviewed your application and found you qualified for the position listed above that have this Referred Status code. However, you were not among the most highly qualified candidates. Therefore, your name will not be referred to the employing agency at this time. If we receive a request from the agency for additional candidates, your application will then be reviewed for possible referral.

That job site doesn't work if you're a straight, non-handicapped white male.

Serious. I wish I were joking.

Congrats on the job, DR!!
