But if you're looking just at an elite guy with the entire package, and deeming everything else (average starter, for example) to be a failure, Ponder makes sense at no. 10. If he stays really healthy, he could develop into a top ten NFL QB.

If I were Cam Newton, I would follow Tebow's lead & start working w/a QB coach that can fine tune my footwork & mechanics. Maybe that's not as viable a project to work on w/1 person like Tebow did w/his throwing motion, but just by doing something other than working out, it would up his stock.

He could get his dad to hire a qb coach.

Bah!

I'm not suggesting we take Christian Ponder at no. 10. I'm saying it makes sense under the "epic success or bust" philosophy at quarterback because 1) Gabbert will be gone by 10, and 2) There aren't a lot of true believers in Locker/Newton/Mallett as elite players. I think people believe in them as potential starters in a weak class.

As for me, I'm not a buyer in the "you need an epic quarterback to compete" philosophy. Teams need to do a lot of things well to compete, that happens to just be one of the few that isn't below everyone's radar. But competent quarterbacks are absolutely everywhere, and that doesn't fit with the narrative about "winners" and such. Competent quarterbacks can appear to be either winners or losers. Just that the "losers" can be acquired much, much cheaper.

After watching Newton's workout yesterday I'm convinced that this man wants to be the best he can be. And he looked damn good too. I know it's alot easier when there's not an actual pass rush, however he looked remarkable. I just hope he's still there at number 10 when we pick.

Indeed, currently Warren Moon is working with him. He's also trying to cajole Farve into assisting as well, which Farve said he would. But we all know how lazy Brett is during the off-season so who knows. Hopefully that will change now he's retired.

Aftere watching him work out on TV, you were able to discern what is in his mind and his level of motivation?

Actually yes, how else am I able to evaluate an athelete I don't personally know? If you can direct me as to how I can forumulate a sound opinion devoid of any visual or printed media then I'm all ears.

Did you bother to listen to his interview? Did you bother to listen to the details about the amount of work he's putting into his off season regimen? Based on what I heard and observed, his actions convinced me that this kid wants to be the best he can be.

If this regime drafts Newton (which I don't think they will), then you can throw the next 5-6 years out of the window.

At the very least Russell didn't have even close to the charisma that you get with a guy like Newton. Still I don't know how Russell was looked at in terms of preparation going into the draft but everything I've heard about Newtons prep and ability to accept coaching is very good. Not Peyton Manning good but certainly enough to warrant a closer look while not worrying to much about him getting lazy after payday.

I can't wait for the team to go to Dalton's Pro Day so When my banwagon thread gets started I can get all excited too about how he's the best QB out there and how he has the most potential.
