Just goes to show us again how the lack of picks over the years comes back to bite us. Because they're always trading picks, the lack thereof means that the ones they have need to be starters. Little to no margin of error for each pick. |

Building a team takes time. We have some pieces in place but we need to keep getting younger. The team should look to accumulate as many draft picks as possible and be weary of signing any free agents that are over the age of 27. Build from the trenches outward. How do you think the Gibbs/Casserly combo won 3 titles with 3 different "veteran" quaterbacks?

Anyone who is not in our plans for 2010 and beyond, and is eating up a large chunk of salary and a roster spot should be jettisoned now. theres no reason to waste salary cap room and roster spots. Yes, we may or may not take a hit in performance in 2009 because of it. But for every old declining veteran we get rid of, it opens up another spot on our roster and/or practice squad to develop future talent. Guys like Griffin, Washington, Taylor, Thrash, Daniels, and Springs should be cut. If Springs or Griff wanted to come back at a reduced salary, i'd consider it, but it would depend on what else is out there. Kendall may be worth keeping, but in the end, he's not in the plans for 2010 so he'd be more of a stop-gap depth guy at the vet min. anything more and i'd look elsewhere. Guys like Jansen, Rabach, and ARE or Moss may stick around another year because theyre more valueable to us this year than they are cut (price v. performance v. depth), but we need to start looking for their replacements as well.

Re: Current Redskins Salary Cap Status - 2009
Just read JLCs new article after my previous post, so its got me thinking slightly differently.
JLC has been reporting for over a month that the team doesnt like Rinehart. I like the fact that Bugel is finally admitting that his old guys dont cut it, cut its saddening to hear that we wont really try to do anything about it. I do not understand why on earth we would try to keep Griffin without asking him to take a reduced salary. Good to know Taylor will probably be gone and likely Springs too (at least at his salary). I wouldnt mind extending Springs at a reduced annual salary (no more than 3.5M/year), moving him to FS and Landry to SS, but i think Springs would rather be a FA and sign with Dallas. The only thing I can think of to explain the FOs thinking here is if we plan on letting our defense suffer another year so we can focus in the draft soley on offensive line. That logic makes sense to a degree: -our defense was our strength last year -Its JCs contract year (and essentially the same for Zorn) and we need to get them as much help as possible on offense to see if theyre worth keeping around... I personally dont know if I agree with the strategy (assuming its their strategy). What do you guys think?

Re: Current Redskins Salary Cap Status - 2009
I am not surprised to read that Redskin players and sources are saying Jason Taylor and Shawn Springs will NOT accept a pay cut or a contract renegotiation. This is going to make for an interesting offseason.
The Reinhardt comments are not really a surprise. He is clearly in Bugel's dog house and that fact despite all of the injuries to the OL, Reinhard was not even considered for even a few minutes of play time is very telling. This guy must be stinking it up in practice. This rookie class is not really showing signs of improvements. |

Re: Current Redskins Salary Cap Status - 2009
That JLC article was deflating:
Rinehart can't play NFL football (how could we have so grossly misjudged him??), neither Heyer or Jansen are viable starters anymore but will both be back in '09. Thomas and Kendall are both in decline with health issues and will both be back in '09. We may go after a guard who could push for a starting job but nothing fancy. Hopefully we'll draft a tackle with our first pick. Sounds like our O-line (our biggest problem) won't be fixed much at all. No mention of Rabach either. I guess he'll be around. We need a home run hitter compliment to Portis but can't afford one in free agency and are limited in draft picks. Jason Taylor may come back, but if he does it will be for an overpaid $8.5M, and it sounds like he doesn't want to be here anyway. Griffin isn't going anywhere and it doesn't sound like we'll be a player for any real FA D-line contributors. I guess the possibility of landing a Connor Barwin type in the 3rd round is cool. We desperately need help with kicking/punting, but we'll do little more than give our current bums some competition in training camp. And we're stuck at WR. It's not looking up for 2009.

It's taken years to dig this hole. It will take years to climb out of it.

I ain't going to say "I told you so" yet, not until we actually see what they do. But the numbers - by and large - tell the tale.
