Commanders were ranked 11th in pass protection for week 1:

plus Washington was the only nfc east team to have two tackles in the top 20 of pass block win rate . . . actually the only team in the nfc east to have anyone tackle in the top 20 in pass block win rate

Re: Cards post game

I was at the game, and it appeared to me the O-line was doing a pretty decent job. The running game was probably below average, but I don't know how much of that was the play calls, the RBs, or the O-line. Probably a good mix. I thought the protection was good overall though. I would only put a couple of those sacks on the O-line - definitely the strip-sack TD. Sam needs to be more decisive. Hopefully that will come with more experience in the league and in EB's system.

Some decent tight end play will help a lot .

Good inflo, thanks for posting.

Listing to Logan or Keim…one of them said the new Right Tackle, A-Dub, had a good pass blocking day and unfortunately the one play he blew lead to the worst play of the day for the skins…scoop and score

If you are talking about the SH fumble for an AZ TD, it was Wiley's man clearly who got to SH on a miss block by #71

start at 3:40 mark to see play

After seeing Commanders 11th in pass protection wk 1, this solidifies my belief that Howell needs to get rid of the ball quicker. Via plays, his own decisions, whatever. Think it will help a lot.

Re: Cards post game

Sam has to learn to cover the ball and go down on that play. Once Wiley was beat he was dead to rights and his only job is to secure the ball and not carry it like a briefcase. Probably just growing pains but hopefully he learns from that.

He needs to trust his arm too. On the first play, the hook on the left (Terry?) is open if he throws early and with power. Seems he lacks a bit of faith he can drive a ball into a small window. The NFL is often about small windows.

I very much doubt that Sam lacks the confidence to throw the ball into small windows. Also, I'm certain that he knows more than anyone that he has a very powerful arm. So, I'd look elsewhere for the reason he didn't make a throw.

According to PFF all of the individual members of the offensive line pass blocked well but Gibson and Thomas were horrible in pass protection.

Sam does need to be more decisive, protect the ball, and avoid sacks. By all accounts, Sam is a quick learner so he should improve but we shouldn't fool ourselves that Sam won't go through the usual rough patches as he learns.

We have a very good blocking TE in John Bates who should probably take the pass protection snaps from Thomas. Our RB's seemed to me to be much improved in pass pro during the preseason. Now I'm not so sure about that. I'm starting to feel that we should go after a prime all-around back via trade.

Bates needs to play more period. Very good blocker and can catch some. Please more him and Turner in this offense asap.

I actually think it is a confidence thing. Maybe not necessarily confidence in his abilities, but confidence with regard to trusting what he is seeing, and that his guys will make the plays if he just puts the ball on them in time.

It will come with experience and more reps.

I think there was more pressure on him that realized v. AZ. Season home opener under total new regime, worst team in league, new o-coordinator, many former greats in attendance, etc. I actually think he plays much better soon. Kid has a lot of talent. Interested to see how o plays v. Denver.

That is a very valid point. The pressure was definitely on for them to win that game, and for him to do well. Nothing for AZ to lose, but if we had lost...
