Re: Redskins Acquire QB John Beck (for CB Doug Dutch)
Just odd that coming out of college one of the knocks on him was his arm strength. Could have been overblown, but saying he's got a rocket arm might be overstating things as well. I'm just going off of what my buddy said who's a Dolphins fan. He said his arm strength was adequate but nothing special.

^^^ it just seems like this was a simple move, no harm done, and builds a relationship.

I've been following Beck's career closely, as I do all BYU players. For all the gunslinging people attribute to BYU's offense, it's interesting to note that as far as ratio, and I remember specifically from Beck's Sr year, they run about a 51:49 ratio of pass to run. It's not quite as "pass happy" as people make them out to be. Common misconception. They aren't like Texas Tech, which runs a more 70:30 pass:run ratio. I wish Beck the best in Washington. He's gotten a lot of crap for Miami, and it would be unfortunate to have that follow him his whole career. He's a fantastic character guy with a HUGE football IQ. It was mentioned that there haven't been a lot of BYU QB's in the NFL make it super successfully. Forgotten are the Gifford Neilson's and Marc Wilsons of the world, of course. But yes, in recent history there've been a lack of them. I've always loved Beck because he's been the most capable that I've seen for a long time. He just needs his shot. With Washington, it's the perfect situation. An injury-prone older starter in McNabb. A questionable back-up in Grossman. If Beck wins the 2nd position (which I strongly believe he can), it will be awesome to see him play again. On another note, people forgot that even when Beck started for Miami (the team was 0-8 before they threw him to the wolves after running the Scout team), he played Pitt in one of the worst conditions ever seen. The Steelers won the game 0-3, but people forget that Beck actually outperformed Rothlesberger statistically. Ben was pulled out, due to playing so badly. Yes. I'm a Beck homer, if only because I know what he's capable of. I hope you all get a chance to see it (the Positive stuff, that is). I'd like to see the conundrum which was Miami be brought to rest in his future. |

Anyone would agree that continuity is much easier to manage with an athlete than the unique situation LDS mission-bound athletes go thru. Sure, they mature a couple years, but that doesn't mean their bodies come back ready to play. Some never do. All that being said, I'd say age is a wash in this case. But that's my opinion. And another thing. Serving a 2 year mission doesn't make you 4 years older than the competition. It would be +2. |

Re: Redskins Acquire QB John Beck (for CB Doug Dutch)
Praise for Beck
4:12 PM ET John Beck | Redskins TopEmail We wrote Monday following the Washington Redskins' trade for John Beck about the possibilities for the Skins' opening day QB depth chart. If the team chooses to keep three quarterbacks, then Beck figures to fit in alongside another offseason acquisition in Rex Grossman. If the Skins only keep two QBs however, then Beck and Grossman will be battling it out this preseason to be Donovan McNabb's backup. The early comments from the coaching staff seem to be positive for Beck. Offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan says, via CSNWashington.com, "We evaluated [Beck's four starts with Miami], and he did play like a rookie, but he definitely didn't show anything that said he couldn't play in the NFL." Mike Shanahan added that he liked Beck's play in college, and that he's excited to see him first-hand. These votes of confidence, coupled with rumblings that Grossman has been less-than-impressive this offseason, could shift the advantage slightly in Beck's direction.

As for where the difference between two and four come in, an August birthday is pretty advanced in the context of a high school graduating class (i.e. most classmates are younger, some by half a year or more), and he took a redshirt year in 2000 before going on a two year mission. John Beck played four consecutive seasons at BYU from 2003-2006 after concluding a two year mission. Surely, you're not implying the Beck wasn't in football shape in Feb. 2007 because he spent 24 months between 2001 and 2003 on things more important than football? That timeline seems to undermine what you're trying to say about his college performance, given the unique circumstances.

Mooby I am being funny here. Over reacting is one of my many trademarks. But getting Gus for the #3 really wouldn't be that bad of a move. You really would only have to sign him to a one year deal, then in 2011 you draft a QB to replace him. |

But what about when you hit that eventual brick wall of old age? Gus you should really start thinking about your post-football future.

He's 27 not 40, he's at his physical peak right now. I don't see how it makes sense to speculate that he has less arm strength now. (True story army buddy(29) who hasn't thrown a baseball since (in earnest) since he was 19 threw 77 mph by gun at a fair) Quote:
But that doesn't mean that he'll be a good QB just that he has above average physical tools. But so did Kyle Boller, JaMarcus Russell and from this draft class i'm pretty sure the kid out of Fordham and Jarrett Brown have the strongest arms. Arm strength isn't the end all be all, that's not the point i was making. I just wanted to bring it to light since most fans don't know much about Beck. I thought it was a cool nugget to know about the kid. Last edited by 30gut; 08-04-2010 at 01:41 PM. |

Re: Redskins Acquire QB John Beck (for CB Doug Dutch)
Gus could not be put on the practice squad. Bartel, however, could be our third QB there, keeping open an active roster spots but still giving us 3 QB's in practice.

Gus come one get on with your life. This guy is used up and over the hill, and was never anything to begin with. Not only did he make history with his head in DC not a very proud achieviement if he remembers, he did have his single PB nod in 96 as a Redskin other than that the guy has for the most part with 7 NFL teams been a career backup. Getting Frerotte out of a retirement home to come play football for the Redskins at the #3 spot is one of the most laughable things to even consider. Let the guy go coach High School football or sell insurance in peace. There is ZERO place in the NFL for Gus ESPECIALLY DC!
