Artificially Intelligent Game Bots Pass the Turing Test On Turing's Centenary

An artificially intelligent virtual gamer created by computer scientists at The University of Texas at Austin has won the BotPrize by convincing a panel of judges that it was more human-like than half the humans it competed against.

First question: were the judges robots. (the answer is no. which ultimately points to "we ain't there yet")

2nd question: how good a definition of "humanness" are they using when the "Human players received an average humanness rating of only 40 percent"

Who would be a better judge of a human than a human? We are SO there!

Google it and you'll see the criteria, seems perfectly adequate to me.

Re: All things Science related. λν = c

btw, the problem with the turning tests is basically the "good" bots just kinda repeat what you say and aren't really intelligent at all. we've proven time and again that making computers insanely good at specific tasks is pretty trivial if you've got cash and man hours to throw at it (Deep blue, the jeopardy thing, turning tests etc).

as far as that article - reaperbot has been around since quake 1 and has been amazingly good since 1997. the guy got hired by epic (unreal team) and has pretty much perfected shooter AI bots. it finds all the powerups and ranks importance, then runs around between them with nearly perfect spawn timing. to make it more "human" all you need to do is insert randomness in movement and aim.

the thing already mapped levels on the fly, assigned waypoints to item spawns and used a "sound" variable to determine targets/target locations (Can i hear a gun around the corner? i should aim at the opening and wait a couple seconds). bot AI really hasn't jumped that massively since late 96/early 97 in all honesty.
