Re: The Sam Howell Thread

Until Thanksgiving Sam had faced a relative easy schedule in terms of defenses. Since the Cowboys game it has gotten harder. More film on him and facing better defenses was a big test. A big knock I keep hearing from the other teams every week is he has difficulty reading defenses in particular blitzes before the snap and gets confused by zone coverages. I am not saying either way what that means could be a young QB that needs to develop, could mean he is at his ceiling and needs a more hands on OC to be successful, could mean this is who is is.

Re: The Sam Howell Thread

Difficult to measure Howell when almost everything is terrible. Look at Tua and Lawrence, both didn't look good in their first year with bad head coach and offense coordinator. Both looked much better with new offense system.

I didn't watch the game enough to judge Howell's performance so I cannot say much about yesterday, nonetheless, I'm still in the Howell bandwagon. But I wouldn't be upset if the new GM/coach draft a new QB.

I'm not giving up on Sam, but they have to seriously consider a QB in the draft with a top 5 pick, they just have to.

As of today

Bears (panthers)
Pats
Cards
Comms
Bears

That’s the top 5.

If we beat the jets next week then we will drop to 6 or 7.

The Pats will 100% take a QB unless they can get Kirk cousins or something.

Bears are a ?

Cards won’t take a QB.

So we will have Maye or Williams at 4 for sure and that’s not to say we don’t trade up to number 2 with NE.

This was also in some scouting profiles along with having trouble seeing downfield. Dude took a lot of sacks at UNC as well.
He has 1st round ability with a 7th round brain.

I don’t get why we want to develop a guy whose ceiling is Rex Grossman.
You develop a guy like Josh Allen with a high ceiling that can take over games.

If I’m Sam Howell, first thing I do is start an only fans for you jock sniffers then use that money to pay Drew Brees to coach him up on how to read defenses and find passing lanes while in the pocket. Brees was a master at that and that’s been Sams downfall.

At the end of the day, if they can upgrade the position, I’m happy

You could have said all those same things about Drew Brees. He got off to a rough start and was benched. You could have said his ceiling wasn't very high either.

Re: The Sam Howell Thread

The amount of people on Reddit saying to get rid of Sam (not even realizing he’s still on a rookie deal) is crazy. To me he’s shaping up to be another Heinicke, he’ll win you games but he’ll never get you to the promised land. Granted that could change with the next coaching regime because I don’t think we’ve hit Sam’s ceiling yet and he can be developed more but letting the dude go is wild to me.

how about a draft similar to this:

4. Olumuyiwa Fashanu - OT Penn State
38. Bo Nix - QB Oregon
41. Graham Barton - OG Duke
68. Sedrick Van Pran - OC Georgia
96. Tommy Eichenberg - LB Ohio State
100. Darius Robinson - EDGE Missouri
125. Brevyn Spann-Ford - TE Minnesota
132. Junior Colson - LB Michigan
142. Jaylin Noel - WR Iowa State
191. Jo'Quavious Marks - RB Mississippi State

Still got the best OT, best Center and second best guard (imo) in the draft . . . plus added Bo Nix to compete with Howell.

Re: The Sam Howell Thread

What bothered me yesterday was that when Brisset came in there the ball was coming out fast. He wasn't dicking around back there. End of his drop he was cutting it loose. I liked what I saw there.

Why wasn't Sam doing that?

Bo Nix IMO is not worthy of a 2nd round pick. He is a 5th or 6th round project.

Part of it is I don’t think he’s fully developed so he’s not processing fast enough. The other part is I think he’s so shell shocked from the pocket collapsing and getting nailed that he panics and can’t get through his progressions correctly.

Re: The Sam Howell Thread

JB is an 8 year vet with 48 starts under his belt, naturally he's going to look the part vs Sam who's on start #15.

Plus it's worth noting that Sam may never be great at dropping back and operating from the pocket efficiently on a consistent basis. He's good off schedule, but still has a ways to go from the pocket.
