Doug Williams on Drafting:
"You know, I've always said the draft is kind of like a crapshoot sometimes," Williams told Redskins.com. "Sometimes you pick the one that you think is up there and they don't make it, then the guys you pick down at the bottom are the ones who come up top, you never know. It all depends on what's in the guy's heart and how they look at this thing and how they take the game. The most important thing, if they've played this game with a lot of passion, a lot of heart, with the abilities that they do have, nine times out of 10 they are going to be successful."

Does this concern anyone else? I know this doesn't necessarily speak to Dougs ability to evaluate talent, but it doesn't inspire much faith in this FO without Mccloughan. I've heard that Gruden is a good talent evaluator (Cooley, Cousins, and McCloughan have all said it), and I certainly hope so, because in this critical off season we need someone who can find the right guy if Cousins won't stay.

To add onto the last post, i do think that Doug will be getting used to his role for abother year or two, and with that, comes media presence etc etc.

Any evaluator will say the draft is a crapshoot, an inexact science.

I'd fire Bruce Allen tonight and make Doug Williams the GM if I could. Don't see anything concerning here. We're not pros but all serious fans, and there are guys I was way off about on both sides of spectrum.

Agree, Williams comments were brutally honest without the polish of used car salesman speak.

I don't mind it at all. The best drafting teams miss, and miss in the first round. It's a total crap shoot

Re: Redskins Offseason Thread

The Redskins aren't expected to re-sign impending free agent LG Shawn Lauvao.

Starting C Spencer Long is also set to be a free agent. Long opened his career as the Redskins' left guard, but the team also doesn't want him there. Lauvao is now 30 and always seems to be hurt, ending three of the last four seasons on IR. Washington's line crumbled with injuries this past year.

Need to Know: Can the Redskins tag and trade Cousins? | NBC Sports Washington

Long and Luavao not wanted back per Tandler. Neither earned an extension this year. peaceout

Lauvao is horrible, as is Long. Can't blame the team

I was listening to 106.7 and they were making a big deal out of this. What he said is truthful. What he basically said was some guys that are drafted high don't turn out to be better than later round guys. It happens all the time every year. It happened here w/ Cousins and Griffin. I guess the media needed something to talk about.

The draft is not a lottery ticket, all it takes is luck to succeed. Good GMs make good picks. Sure, the best GMs are not perfect, however, they make a higher percentage of good picks.

It has been awhile since the Redskins had a good GM.

Re: Redskins Offseason Thread

Which is why the Patriots stock picks, trading down for more frequently. They're playing the numbers game and not getting attached or overly excited by any particular player. It's "show me what ya got" and if they're unimpressed, they move on. They obviously do well with their picks, but I think the better skill there is knowing when to cut your losses and move on -- they have an uncanny read on when someone's value is about to fall off. A lot of guys they let go are picked up by other teams and do very little (Cassel, Wilfork, heck, even Blount only had 766 yards a 2 TDs for the Eagles, down from 1100+ and 18 TDs last year).
