If you're old enough to remember, you remember. It was on sportscenter. When he left we were all shocked, but understood. When we found out he didn't spend time with family, he went to NASCAR, a lot of us were upset for not being honest. This is not opinion, but fact. All was forgiven when he came back, but you never know when he might do it again. So we need to enjoy his leadership while we have it. Your comment of "does he owe us an explanation?" Of course not, but he offered one. He could have left for any reason in his own head, including burnt out or just don't have the spark anymore. No one would care. But don't tell us one thing and do another. However, he did cite health issues, and that was true...he should have left it at that.

Re: Gibbs will be back next year
Skinsguy...oddly enough, I did find a little proof. I didn't think I would since it was so long ago.
here is the site I got this info from: About Joe Gibbs, Joe Gibbs Online, Sign Up for Joe's Weekly Spiritual Game Plan!, Joe Gibbs "Gibbs retired from football in 1993, after citing health problems. He was known for his long hours, and he said he wanted to spend more time with his family." "as he led the Washington Redskins to three Super Bowl victories in four appearances, then quit to own a NASCAR racing team."

Re: Gibbs will be back next year
As TAFKAS pointed out, he worked closely with his sons on the race team, so he did spend more time with the family. Plus I'm sure NASCAR wasn't quite the grind that the NFL was for him.

Re: Gibbs will be back next year
I thought his kids didn't join him for a couple years after he started NASCAR?

Re: Gibbs will be back next year
It appears you are right about J.D., he joined in 93, but wasn't president until 97. I misunderstood when he joined the Gibbs team.
It still doesn't change the fact that he was speaking of Coy growing a beard as to why he left to be with family. But I guess I can see where people would think he was "with family" since he was with J.D. It's a weak argument at best though. There was much more to his family than just J.D. At least I can see your point though.

Re: Gibbs will be back next year
All that matters is that he's back. How many coaches retire and then return like he has??

I'm currently reading the book "Hail Victory" and in the book where Gibbs talks about his father he says, "He wasn't there alot. I started thinking about those things. I thought how much longer do I have to enjoy those other things? After twenty five years of doing what I was doing, I was getting a little tired of doing the same thing." To me, his decision to retire was completely understandable. For those of us who had the priviledge of witnessing his first tenure as coach it was very hard to let him go and it makes me so grateful that he chose to come back. He was, is and always will be the Redskins to me. |

Re: Gibbs will be back next year
Yeah, the injury to Prioleau is bigger than people realize. The reason is that when he went down, Archuletta was used to fill his spot. This small thing, combined with the loss of Springs is directley responsible for the losses against Minnesota and Houston. If we win those two we are at 6 and 6 and still in the hunt.

But, like you said, we should be happy he is back now and trying to get this franchised turned around. Sure, we don't know when he might decide to leave. The guy does have diabetes and he is in his mid 60's. I believe if he decided to retire early, it would be because of his health and not because he can't get the job done.
