He's been average for like three years.

Your opinions on talent evaluation are no longer valid because anybody with two working eyes can see Trent is easily one of, if not the best player on this team.

His backup (in the event his backup is Ereck Flowers) also coincidentally happens to be one of the worst players on this team.

Re: Trent Williams holding out for new deal

You just can't go into the season with Moses, Flowers, and Geron Christian as your tackle situation. The offense becomes a catastrophe. Moreover I don't even consider letting Haskins play behind that tackle setup. If Trent is traded then Haskins has to sit.

We're over a barrel. You can either stare him down and make him play 2019 on the low contract, or you can pay him. I don't think trading him is a practical solution.

Had we known about his position going into free agency or the draft we might have been able to do something, but with it cropping up now, we need him more than any other NFL team needs him.

we are paying him his due. right now. under his existing contract.

If we could count on Trent to play something even close to 16 games, it would be a different story. But giving new, big money, to aging, injury-prone players when they are already under contract would be incredibly moronic.

Trent Williams issues with Skins are not financial at all according to numerous sources with knowledge of the situation. He's told teammates he has demanded a trade or his release from the club due to their handling of his recent medical situation. Has vowed not to play for them

If those 24 missed games were spread relatively evenly over 9 years, then i'd agree with you. but they haven't been. he's missed the most time in the past few years. Which is normal, you know, when a player has gotten old and the wear and tear on his body has accumulated.

I'm not saying Williams is garbage. He's still elite.... but there is no reason to give him a big money new contract when he still has 2 years left on his current deal and he's been struggling with injuries recently.

You don't trade a guy like him. You don't cut him. You don't give him a new contract. You make him play out this year and then reevaluate the contract situation next year.

sure, he's holding out now, but who cares? He's not going to miss real games. He'll show up for week 1 and that's all i care about.

Re: Trent Williams holding out for new deal

Not sure the argument should be whether or not to pay him. It should be WHEN to pay him.

There is no need to pay him now. He will not hold out in the regular season. If he does, he is not playing elsewhere. Why? Because he has 2 years left on his current deal.

No reason to pay him now with 2 years on his current contract. You pay him as he is entering the final year of the contract.

Re: Trent Williams holding out for new deal

Any time our team runs into money issues like this, it makes me think how f*cking lucky the Pats are.

Yes they have a great coach, but things are a hell of a lot easier, when you don't need to pay your best player.

AP and Trent are good friends, so I'll believe this 1000 times over anything JLC writes:

@michaelpRTD
Adrian Peterson: “I don’t know where that came from. I talk to him all the time and I’ve never heard him say that.” (On Trent Williams report)
