Re: Earthquake in DC!
That was last year. Here is today...
A town 20 miles south of me has temporarily condemned 80 buildings due to potential damage. Police are enforcing it overnight. They will be assessed individually and allowed to reopen as they pass inspection. One building has to be demolished immediately for fear that it is going to fall onto Main Street.

Re: Earthquake in DC!
I was at work in Bethesda and the building started shaking and me and my friend looked at each other like.. Uhm? But it was over in less than 10 seconds. Nothing fell over, no one died, but people panicked for about a good 10 minutes afterwards.

Re: Earthquake in DC!
At first, I thought the guy living in the room above mine was pounding the floor very loudly. Then the floor started shaking and the mattress that was propped on the side fell down. Then I realized it was an earthquake. Half-excited, I went outside to see if stuff was shaking, but by then, it was pretty much over.

Re: Earthquake in DC!
The main thing is that no one died, right?
Damage is a pisser but that's what insurance is for. |

Re: Earthquake in DC!
Actually most people don't carry earthquake ins. Its an endorsement that has to be added to a policy and for the average homeowners it cost around $170 per year. I think I have maybe 4 to 8 customers who carry the coverage and they are from CA. So I'd guess very few of the people who have damage have any coverage.

Re: Earthquake in DC!
I just have to laugh about my area. It was around a 2.0 and they were evacuating buildings and sending people home early.
I understand the need to err on the side of caution these days, I still find it funny though. And of course the local news was going nuts about it and making a way bigger deal than it was. |

Re: Earthquake in DC!
There was a of of sniggering on the West Coast, mostly from me.
A good point was made by a Cal Tech Geologist/Seismologist that the composition of the DC area makes for a bumpier ride. We're all relaxed and loose over here, geologically speaking. |

Re: Earthquake in DC!
It wasnt nothing funny about being on the 5th floor 40 miles from the epicenter of that. 5.8 felt alot worse than it sounds. I dont mind tornados or hurricanes cause i can see them coming, earthquake lil bit of a sneak attack, i dont like that.
