Re: Redskins sign DE Stephen Bowen

It seems that Cullen Jenkins agent had a handshake deal in place with the SKins and pulled back at the last moment trying to get that extra bit. Needless to say, the Skins called his bluff.

We just made him one.

I think Bowen can play up to his contract if left at RDE. It's too big of a contract to exceed, though. Basically just have to hope he carries over his play from the Dallas 3-4 (which is a different scheme than ours), and locks down that position for at least 3 years.

We have Joe Joseph NT on our roster as well, he caught a DUI last season that's why we know nothing about him.

The best NT on our roster is still Anthony Bryant. I didn't think there was a better guy out there to begin with, and I think Cofield can find a place here, but I think he's going to have to move around the defensive front to have matchups he can win.

Which can't really happen if Bowen, and Carriker are playing 70% of snaps in standard downs.

I think there's a lot more young talent on this defensive line than there was at 7 AM on Tuesday. I just am not seeing how it all come together as a good DL.
Cofield has been and will be a NT. He's versatile:

Re: Redskins sign DE Stephen Bowen

A few things have to be considered here. The team has cleared out alot of its aging talent: Daniels, Kemoeatu, Haynesworth. This made the DL depth pretty thin. I don't like the fact that they've seemingly overspent for to restore depth. That's why it's important to find talent later in the draft. This franchise hasn't done a good job at that so therefore are always forced to buy high and sell low. I like the Bowen pickup, not the cost. Maybe Bowen will stick since Carriker won't after this year.

Bryant play very well at NT at the end of the season, I would keep him at NT with Neild. I would be okay with a line consisting of Cofield, Bryant, and Bowen.

You can list all those names, but we're talking about Bowen, NOT PAST MOVES. Was this the right move? I'm not so sure it was but I'll take a wait and see approach.

Bottom Line: I don't think he's worth the 12.5 guaranteed

Re: Redskins sign DE Stephen Bowen

This would be a lot of money for what typically a nose tackle does (plug holes and not play every single snap). Unless we're playing a Wade Phillip type of the 3-4 with an attacking NT.

Re: Redskins sign DE Stephen Bowen

I love how our fanbase on the internet knows so much more about the team than Bruce Allen and Mike Shanahan.

If only they'd lurk on the WP, we'd win the Super Bowl every year!

Doc Walker just said it best ... (to paraphrase): 'Anybody from the front seven of Dallas or the New York Giants, is probably better than yours. Their front lines are among the best in the NFL.'

Re: Redskins sign DE Stephen Bowen

I think he can play at NT. But I don't necessarily think he's an improvement on Bryant unless you're following the money trail.

I mean, Cofield is going to have to get his snaps. He's a young, talented football player with a good bill of health. So if he has to line up at nose to play in our defense, that's probably a good thing.

There's no question it will be the toughest assignment of his career. Bryant is still the proven commodity, at least until Cofield starts to dominate his old team on Sept 11.

And I thought bolstering the D-line would make people happy.

I can't wait to see the joy when we start signing some O-lineman.
