johnson is fast, but so was antonio brown and chad morton and bennet and dante hall and.... now, he's got more talent than those guys (and i'd LOVE him in madden), but speed isn't everything. I mean, reggie bush is probably faster and he hasn't exactly torn it up yet either.

1a. Kenny Phillips S Miami (Best Safety prospect since ST.)
1b. Phillip Merling DE Clemson (Big DE who can get to the QB)

2a. Phillip Wheeler LB Georgia Tech (Marcus Washington's successor, also had 18.5 sacks during his collegiate career.)
2b. DaJuan Morgan S NC State (Some might question Morgan going this high, but I really like this kid. IMO Morgan easily is an upgrade over Doughty.)

Re: (updated title): Make Your Day One Redskins Draft Selections (Rounds 1-2)

1st Round Limas Sweed
2nd Round Devin Thomas
3rd Round Jordy Nelson

Come on, one of them has to pan out. Matt Millen ain't got shit on me.

Ironically though out of the three, the only one that I don't want is Limas Sweed. As I said before the guys biggest game against a "big" opponent was against a struggling Nebraska team back in 06. The rest of his big games came against teams like Sam Houston State and Rice. Jordy Nelson on the other hand played in the same conference the following year and never had a game with less then 80 yards recieving. This includes going against the Corner from Kansas who's projected to be a top 15 pick.

Sweed has not proved himself against good competition and for that I believe that he is only a wrokout wonder. Of course part of that might be from playing with Vince Young and a young Colt McCoy but until I hear thats the reason then I'm sticking with my view that we should stay far away from Sweed.

I am the captain of the Jordy Nelson bandwagon! For me right now, its a toss up between Jordy and Devin Thomas. Nelson has more production, while THomas has more upside. If we dont get one, then we need to get the other.

I'm still trying to decide if it was you or Todd McShay that led me to Jordy Nelson. More funny then that is that I'm getting credit on this thread for bringing up the guy that you mentioned long before I did.

Ironically though every team seems to have a Jordy Nelson bandwagon in all the newsgroups around the league. Hell I bet that there are kids in Detroit going, "WE NEED TO DRAFT JORDY NELSON!"

Anyway I finally get my 1,000th post. Only took me a little over two years. Hail!!!

brandon flowers is a 3rd round pick at cb at this point. i think only hokie fans are suggesting him in the first round. no thanks. (there are about 10-12 cbs i'd take before him)

Re: (updated title): Make Your Day One Redskins Draft Selections (Rounds 1-2)

nelson only had one good year, and he's slow (4.57 average, 4.52 peak), but he was consistent across opponents.

probably not an nfl star, but a good chance at being reliable. he won't get away with a lot of those plays on his highlights in the nfl (due to the fact that almost EVERYONE is going to be faster than him), but he's got good hands and no fear and seems like a good value in the late 3rd.

Just curious -- why would safety be a bigger need compared to cornerback?

Rogers is banged up, Springs is getting long in the tooth. After that it's Fred Smoot, and behind him you've got nothing but journeymen/backups.

cause that's three guys that can start and you'd be okay, two of which will still be here next year. meanwhile at safety you've got a great starter and a backup, that while better than arch deluxe, shouldn't be on the field if possible.

a guy like kenny phillips gives you a LOT more freedom as far as corner talent, and also probably won't spend much time on the bench (which seems to be a theme with our cbs and moss).

db depth is an issue, but macklin is a good #4, even though he didn't see the field last year.

Out of the CB's we have now, one has a season and development threatening injury, and another has a high cap number and is not a lock to be back, or even to play at a high level if he is. The other, bless his heart, is still Fred Smoot.

I would not be opposed to using a mid round pick on a strong safety prospect, such as a Zbikowski, but in the case of a first round prospect like Kenny Phillips, a lot of his physical skill would be overshadowed by the fact that Landry gets to play the much more open safety position.

It would be the same paradox that Landry faced, forced into a role that only utilized a percentage of his talents. If you are going to spend the pick on the safety it would make sense to put him in a role the best suits him. We have a second year stud in the making at that position, so taking a Phillips-like player, barring a fall to the second round doesn't make a lot of sense.

I gotta agree with Beems here, CB is more pressing of a need than Safety. The guy who is playing the other safety now is still developing, and could prove to be just what this team needs. CB will need to be addressed prior to the 2009 season, whereas safety may not need to be.

Re: (updated title): Make Your Day One Redskins Draft Selections (Rounds 1-2)

i don't know why some people think smoot is such a terrible player. but whatever, to each his own.

i mean, we have 2 starters at cb for next year, and only 1 safety (with a backup) and the year after that and beyond we'll still have two unless carlos's injury is far worse than has been reported. it's silly to think we're going to ditch springs this year without a FA replacement or that we're just going to start a rookie corner at the #1 spot and pray for the best.

btw, the "too much talent" argument is kinda weak, though i've heard it before. they figure out ways to use him and he'll figure out a way to make plays. i mean, taylor and landry sure looked better than landry and that other guy

i also think you overlooked that i had the skins projecting to pick up a cb in either the 1st or 2nd (DRC, porter, etc) and in day two, so i don't really understand what inspired such a long response. I was talking about immediate impact and this whole deal about whether we'll need a new corner at some point thing is sorta a completely different direction than that (since a cb faces more competition to start here, takes longer to learn, etc).
